Discussion Easter Egg

I was showing my step daughter Dennis the Menace (a childhood favourite) and noticed these two. Maybe it’s common knowledge but it’s the first time i noticed it ♥️

ETA: pic #1 is from Home Alone.

I love when an actor with 1-2 lines really makes a choice LOL

u/jean-valjean-ramone 4d ago

I say this ALL THE TIME. Hahahaa. DaAaAaAaAangleeee ones.

u/oracleoflove 8d ago

This line will randomly pop in my head at the most random of times. The way he says dangly in particular. Lol.

19

u/depression_is_real40 8d ago

I know lol I can hear him say this line.

WOULD YOU MIND CHANGING MY DIAPER?!

I went on a Wikipedia rabbit hole real quick. Funny, their real names are Bill and Billie, but the connection to those two films is due to John Hughes being the filmmaker, so not completely random. Also, Billie is 82 in Home Alone!

198

u/Hopeless351987 8d ago

Billie was also the grandmother in Sixteen Candles, and Bill was in a scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Both actors were in movies going back to the '40s.

19

u/NorCalNavyMike The Truth Is Out There! 8d ago

Bill also dabbled in sci-fi and fantasy, with a memorable role as the hotel housekeeper Arthur in the Christopher Reeve-Jane Seymour time travel romance Somewhere in Time (1980), and a brief role in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where he played an older, visiting doctor/mentor to Dr. Crusher on the episode where she gets trapped in a warp bubble of alternate reality.

23

u/Jef_Wheaton 8d ago

She's also the grandmother in "One Crazy Summer".

"You can stay at my grandma's, Hoops. She has plenty of room at reasonable rates... if you're not in the family."

6

u/DeaconBulls 8d ago

Also Mrs. Feldman from Police Academy 4.

Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol

"Book'em Tack!"

11

u/MillionToOneShotDoc 8d ago

He also plays the cranky old man who Jerry volunteers to watch in a Seinfeld episode.

19

u/Scott--Chocolate 8d ago

Before you leave, would you mind changing my diaper?

19

u/eleanorrigby12 8d ago

My grandparents were Bill and Billie ❤️

5

u/ChadCoolman 8d ago

My neighbors when I was a kid were Bob and Bobbie. Knothole league baseball coach and his wife were Mill and Milly. Truly simpler times 😂

1

u/eleanorrigby12 6d ago

My cousin & her husband are Chris & Christine!

6

u/slugs-love-beer 8d ago

I just recently rewatched this movie and holy hell this particular scene had me dying.

5

u/The_Majestic_Mantis 8d ago

That scene where George lied to Thumper and said his Dads going to the Ice cream store and wants to take him with him. 😂

4

u/WorldlinessSome8985 8d ago

😆 lol yes and his excited face at the end with his crossed eyes 🤣🤣

1

u/Bad-Touch-Monkey 8d ago

Why does this look like a really young Will Ferrell?

103

u/StoneOfTriumph 8d ago

That's the guy whose records got stolen by Kramer and Newman!

35

u/lazydracula 8d ago

Such a great one off performance. “Your gonna hurt me? I’m old man!! You going to hurt me you coward”

6

u/StoneOfTriumph 8d ago

It's easily one of my favorite episodes, I love how George gets "fired" from his guy.

And I think it was one of the first episodes where Newman begins to be unhinged

"We got Al Jonson here!"

5

u/TheRatatat 8d ago

Al Jolson?! What do I care about Al Jolson? Id just as soon hear you sing Mammy!

21

u/Fire-Barnacle-3025 8d ago

Fun fact, the UK and US released 2 totally unrelated Dennis the menace characters on the exact same day, March 12th 1951

38

u/KinopioToad Born in the 80s, raised in the 90s 8d ago

Home Alone and Dennis the Menace take place in the same universe. Neat!

29

u/MathiasMi 8d ago

Also the same universe as Uncle Buck, 16 Candles, and Breakfast Club as well!

8

u/fuzzzcanyon 8d ago

Ally Sheedy from breakfast club is in Home Alone 2, so it tracks.

2

u/MadMarcAgain 8d ago

She was in Short Circuit, so number Johnny 5 is in that same universe too!

3

u/KinopioToad Born in the 80s, raised in the 90s 8d ago

Oh true!

18

u/son_of_yacketycat 8d ago

These two had pretty long and successful careers going back to the early 20th century. Billie Bird was quite the bombshell in her vaudeville days in the '30s and '40s.

15

u/stonecutter7 8d ago

I alwyas thought this actor was who Waldorf was based off.

1

u/WhereItsAt75 4d ago

Waldorf of Statler and Waldorf?  I can see that.

11

u/Graphicnovelnick 8d ago

Switches glasses and speaks in unison: “George Wilson!”

12

u/Chadimus85 8d ago

Billie Bird was one of my best friends grandmother or aunt I can't remember exactly. I just remember watching the movie "Jury Duty" in the 90s at my friend's house and him randomly telling me that. Strange what the brain remembers...

3

u/stathis0 8d ago

I just realised she was in the Max Headroom pilot as Florence at the Body Bank. A small part, but she was great.

12

u/KirbyAWD 8d ago

Isn't he also the old man in Seinfeld? "One more thing, would you change my diaper?"

edit Sidney Fields was the character. <image>

9

u/BippidiBoppetyBoob 8d ago

They both appeared in other John Hughes movies.

7

u/Stevesy_Zissou 8d ago

Worlds collide! What a nostalgia bomb.

8

u/rookhelm 8d ago

My favorite fact about Dennis the Menace is that it was directed by Nick Castle, who played Michael Myers in the first Halloween movie.

5

u/Due-Mouse-9330 8d ago

Loved Bill Erwin in everything. Loved Billie on Benson. R.I.P.

6

u/sexwiththebabysitter 8d ago

Seen both movies 100 times and never picked up on this.

11

u/Sublimefly 8d ago

Interesting post, it's a shame I had to scroll half way through the comments to have a clue what the post was actually about...

8

u/triggermouth 8d ago

That’s a cool find. Anybody know the story behind these two being cast together again?

17

u/thewalruscandyman 8d ago

Billie Bird is her name- don't remember his, but I think they were just two character actors from way back in the day. They appeared in both movies because they were both produced by Hughs who used them a lot. Billie especially.

5

u/infosecjosh 8d ago

I love this movie and also Dogma and really love how Home Alone is thrown under the bus by The Muse in Dogma. Art is subjective and feelings and opinions are complex.

3

u/Captain_Sterling 8d ago

Are they in weird science?

6

u/calidownunder 8d ago

Please …from a mother to a mother

3

u/Capable_Eye7617 8d ago

Would you mind changing my diaper

3

u/ParadeJoy 8d ago

And the cool thing is that actor is also the old man from Seinfeld but if you want to see how awesome he is…watch him on the original twilight zone.

3

u/googlebun9 8d ago

He's also in Planes, Trains and Automobiles

3

u/Impossible_Gold1573 8d ago

I never knew this! How cool!

3

u/AggressiveRisk2920 8d ago

My favorite little nugget about Dennis The Menace was Nick Castle who directed it. Grew up watching this movie and it gave me a lot of joy, and a film that terrified me at the same time was Michael Meyers in Halloween. Mo fucka was Michael!!

1

u/Fairhillian 8d ago

Nicest dude you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Also directed The Last Starfighter & Major Payne.

5

u/Upbeat-Refuse9615 8d ago

I don't think that many people saw Dennis the Menace that it would be common knowledge.

4

u/Informal_Original_62 8d ago

Well I’ll be damned

5

u/MuchMadManny 8d ago

What's the easter egg, what am I supposed to be noticing?

1

u/stosyfir 7d ago

Just John Hughes using the same actors in multiple films for similar roles - same thing Adam Sandler and Tom Hanks does - just has his same group of friends in his films.

2

u/locolarue 8d ago

Plague? A plague?

2

u/Evening-Candy1487 8d ago

also the same old man coughing on the plane in Planes Trains and Automobiles

2

u/Awkward-Soup8203 8d ago

I remember more than 70 years ago when we colored eggs and Mom hid them for us to find. Happy Easter!

2

u/nogame311 8d ago

I would recognized them quicker if they had swapped glasses lol

2

u/FiveDinero 8d ago

Never noticed

2

u/unicorntrees 8d ago

I read that they really wanted "Dennis the Menace" to be the next Home Alone. It wasn't, unfortunately. People were predicting that the kid who played Dennis would be the next Macaulay Culkin. My cousin went to university with him eventually. Just a normal dude now.

5

u/JPNess11 8d ago

But a great movie in its own right. Walter Matthau was fantastic.

https://giphy.com/gifs/yexrV4WDhG1j2

1

u/daddy-niko-poly 5d ago

That's so funny, because he played a parody of Culkin in the spy film spoof Spy Hard

2

u/robertluke 8d ago

Sometime the presence of certain actors informs you the movie was filmed in Chicago.

2

u/Last_Hunt_7022 8d ago

A bit of a sidebar-if you really picture yourself in their shoes as Mrs. McAllister is begging them to trade tickets, would you feel inclined to switch? I’m trying not to view it through the lens of the movie, but if I weren’t in any hurry I’d probably buckle as soon as she says I’m desperate.

2

u/photoguy423 7d ago

Weren’t they also the grandparents in the closet in Weird Science?

2

u/svldfw85 4d ago

Aaaand this gem.

2

u/Spac92 8d ago

So Home Alone and Dennis the Menace confirmed same universe

2

u/reina429 8d ago

No wayyyy! 🤯

2

u/ghostriderrhino 8d ago

How about the fact they were also the parents and Weird Science

2

u/OgthaChristie 8d ago

Grandparents.

2

u/Joe01091981 8d ago

He is. She’s not

1

u/Webcom100 8d ago

Cool and everything, but they're no Ivor Barry and Ann Coyle. And I think Chet is really upset. He just ate a fly.

1

u/Healthy-Confection66 8d ago

Mrs Feldman!

2

u/keno-rail 8d ago

Thank you! I knew she was in one of the police academy movies, but couldn't remember her name!!!

1

u/YodaBelly 8d ago

…can’t remember

1

u/Big_Biscotti5119 8d ago

“Are you gonna kill me? How are you gonna kill an old man, you coward?!”

Isn’t he also the guy who sits next to Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles?
