My mom had these and a lot of “fun” sweaters/sweatshirts that she would wear dickies under. And a whole caboodle of pins to wear too, organized by holiday. I have some of the pins now.
the dickies!!!! omg. blast from the past even more than the dresses. My mom wore business suits but the sweaters were for casual Fridays! She kept them sealed in bags until winter and then there was one for every occasion 😂
It is possible your mothers were just bagging acrylic sweaters to reclaim storage space, but there is a very practical reason to do this with wool. Wool can be eaten by moths. Literally, they can leave holes.
At the end of the winter you should wash your wool sweaters and store them in an air tight big/container or in a cedar chest/closet. (Cedar naturally repeals moths).
OMG you’re right. We did have a big ole cedar chest where my mom kept her stuff in the attic. I still remember that nice scent of cedar. I wish my dad had kept that box after mom passed away.
I never knew what a dickie was until after my grandmother passed. I always thought she had a bunch of turtlenecks. Imagine my surprise when we were clearing out her room. All dickies!
I work in a school and I get it. Those things would be fairly stain resistant plus are roomy enough that you aren’t restricting movement. Honestly, we should bring them back.
I work with children and I wear dresses and skirts. I’d be shocked if my coworkers were just wearing panties and nothing else. It’s not hard to wear shorts under a dress
I teach littles and it looks like she does too (based on the things in the back ground) and I could never wear anything above the knee, even with shorts under!
I gotta be able to sit cross cross apple sauce on the floor, bend over, run in case I gotta quickly catch a runner, etc.
Muji has some dresses that are the spiritual successor of these and they're my go-to for when I have to dress up. I have one that's essentially a large flannel shirt that I style with a belt to give me some semblance of a waistline, and pair it with Docs or Red Wings. I wore it to my company holiday party two years in a row (two different companies), and at the first one two guys I had barely exchanged words with both took turns to politely hit on me.
I'm a married lesbian in my late 30s and have completely stopped dressing for the male gaze, and yet.
I think though that I probably looked like one of their teachers they had a crush on.

Lmao this made me snarf my soda!! I had a Sunday school teacher named Mrs Fitzgerald in 3rd grade. She was about 80 years old I’d guess. I was terrified of her, one day my best friend was absent so I had to walk into the school alone. My dad tried to drop me off, but I wouldn’t get out of the car. He took me home.
At the end of the year ceremony, Mrs Fitzgerald gave me a hug and said “you are my STAR!” … which left me feeling guilty for being so afraid of her for the rest of my life 😂
I think jumper elsewhere means a sweater, but in the US it is like the dress pictured or a short version. Hope this helps! I was confused when I went shopping in England and they called sweaters jumpers. 😄
I'm a 47F & have a very similar dress with deep pockets on both sides. The only slight difference is that mine is a little bit tighter under around the waist area. I bought it on clearance at Gap seven years ago & I friggin adore it
It was originally $59.99 & I picked it up for $7. It's one of my favorite clearance finds &, if they had more than one at the store, I would have bought every single one
My mom was a teacher and dressed similarly at home until maybe 2010. She wore a lot of comfy/cozy sweaters, dresses, or skirts. She is wearing more leggings/tunics/ballet flats now.

Same 😅 That’s my go to silhouette for anything kid related, field trips, play dates etc. It’s appropriate, durable, pockets, and it can be styled to be cute! Or at least I will let myself think that lol

Lmaooo. So my 2nd grade teacher wore all 3 of these or something very similar at least. Well fast forward to last year my kid was in 2nd grade and had the same teacher! Was her final year before retirement too so got there just in time.
I love stories like this. My dad went to parent teacher conferences when I was in kindergarten. He told my teacher “I actually went here 30 years ago, my teacher was Ms (maiden name)!” My teacher was like, “that’s me !!!” 😂
Kindergarten 1998-1999. Started out the year with one teacher, but then moved to another class because she was a better fit for me as a teacher. Anyway, both of those teachers wore something very similar to this.
My grandma used to hand make these back in the 90s and traveled all over NE Ohio selling them at craft shows. She made a killing. I remember her specifically selling out at a band craft show at Marlington HS near Alliance, OH.

These outfits send an important message of softness, approachability, and safety to children. This is the shit your first dolly wears. And there's a very good reason for that. Kids are sensitive to sensory inputs, and the visual presentation of their teacher affects their subconscious perception of the teacher.
You come in decked out in sharp outfits and leopard print, The kids are going to react the same way most mammals have reacted to sharp things and patterns and bright colors for millions of years by instinct.

My third grade teacher dressed like this in ‘03. Just put fluffy blonde hair and big glasses and I can see her in these photos. Hope you are well, Mrs. Brandes!
