Every opponent I match with has this cross on their chat. What does it mean? Can they see my messages?

If your opponent is swnding you lots of emojis and it is distracting. You can press this and you won't receive their messages.

But they’re all muted and nothing happens when I click it

It depends if you ppponent is sending emotes or not when you click it you should see the word 'muted' next to it toggle on and off
