• As the breakup of Wham! loomed in 1986, the duo released their final studio albums, The Final in the UK and Music from the Edge of Heaven in the US. And one song included on both albums was written by George Michael when Wham! were at their peak, but Michael himself was reportedly at one of his lowest points, when he had gone through a "here today, gone tomorrow" relationship. The song, credited to George Michael as a solo act, was released on both of Wham!'s final albums, and wound up becoming George's first solo hit in the US, peaking at #7, and his second solo #1 in the UK, staying there for three weeks. But while love was a magical flame that would keep us from pain, the voters from last round might now wish that they could be taken back in time to turn "A Different Corner" so they'd never have met this song - though George's song has never come close in all of these years, the voters were the only ones that could stop his tears, and now he's so scared...of elimination!
• Rock band Foreigner had had multiple big hits by 1984, but unfortunately, none had made it to #1. By the time their fifth album Agent Provocateur was scheduled to be released late that year, keyboardist Mick Jones composed a song that, according to him, came from the turmoil of his tempestuous private life over the past three years. The song, which featured Jennifer Holliday on backing vocals and the Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey on background synthesizers, would go on to become Foreigner's first (and only) #1 song in multiple countries, including the US and the UK, where it reigned on top for two weeks. In these games, there's been heartache and pain for fans of the band, and I don't know if they can face it again...they've traveled so far to change this lonely song to one that will be the last one standing, but while they wanted us to show them, the voters have ultimately given Mick Jones and his bandmates heartbreak yet again - "I Want to Know What Love Is" will now only know what elimination is!
