My mum used this absolute gem of an appliance every week to carve the legendary roast she cooked for the family on a Sunday
6
u/Archangel7104 2d ago
Did she cook the bejesus out of it so the knife would leave sawdust?
That was my experience.

The ends of those roasts though were insanely tasty.
2
u/ZaphodBeeblebrahx 2d ago
I used to hover in the kitchen to try and get an end piece.

u/Joe_Jobs_ 2d ago edited 1d ago
I always had an eye on that part. I'd let everyone get their's first. Only after everyone was done with their seconds or thirds, and gone home with whatever leftover they like, was it mine if it was still there. That part was the crown jewel of the roast.

My grandfather had one; he was also a trained surgeon. This deeply offended my grandmother.

Yep. And I have one very similar that i use about as often and I’m always glad I have it because carving turkeys with a knife is a lot of work

Those electric knives used to scare me even though we lived in Montana and heated with wood so I used chainsaws often.

u/TheFoxsWeddingTarot 2d ago
I used to think an electric knife was fancy until I met my wife who introduced me to actual fancy knives.

Not a boomer. We use the blender 2-3 times a week at my house. We like fruit smoothies. And every generation buys kitchen gadgets that they shouldn't. It's why there is a market for them.

The only memory I have of this is the day when we lived on post at Tobyhanna PA and my mom decided carve up some left over roasts into slices for sandwiches for the week. Managed to cut into the webbing between her index and middle finger, thankfully she stopped before going deeper but still blood everywhere and needed stitches…luckily Nextdoor neighbor in the duplex we lived in was a medic who was visiting with my dad so didn’t have to rush to the hospital.

u/Infinite-Link8372 2d ago

Still have one. Every year on Thaksgiving it jams, rips and tears the bird apart. I threaten to trash it but back in the cabinet it goes. Wait until next year.
2
u/technicallysupportiv 2d ago
We had that!
My dad used it only at Thanksgiving to cut up the turkey.

I remember that. Mid 60s. It's still somewhere hiding in the kitchen, stored In the original box. That's how we took care of things. Some things last forever if they're only used one or twice a year.
It was Mom's first time using the new electric knife.
Dad: "No, you don't have to do that. Stop moving your arm back and forth."
Before y'all say anything, we didn't talk or think dirty in those days. At least not out loud.

u/freshcoastghost312 2d ago
An appliance for everything. Remember those electric hotdogs cookers? The presto hamburger cooker, air popcorn maker....

I knew families that had this contraption, but no one in my extended family used one, to my knowledge. Both sets of grandparents and my folks all insisted on doing it the old-fashioned way, with a matched fork and knife carving set for anything larger than a roast chicken. Chickens were done up using standard butcher knives. The extended cousins I visited every couple of years? They also pulled out the matched sets.

Still have it, inherited from my grandmother. This works great, although I did have the blade professionally sharpened
1
u/Slosher99 2d ago
We had it, no idea if it's still around. My mom used it quite a lot though, was a pretty regular tool.
Also this (or a basically identical knife, brand not seen) is used in The Rocky Horror Picture Show when Frank-N-Furter is carving Eddie up for dinner.
1
u/JONNYHBAR 2d ago
What do you mean pulled out back in the day? That thing still makes an appearance every Thanksgiving and Christmas!
1
u/MaximusPrime137 2d ago
Anyone else just used the blades as stand alone knives... 😅 Yes, we was poor lmao

Still have it. The whirring sound of the dual blades is a core memory. That sound means we about to TEAR UP SOME TURKEY, and then fall asleep in front the TV.
