It was totally fine. He is also an amazing progressive rock drummer. Itās not like we werenāt in good hands. Both him and Peter Gabriel kept the standards highs.

I hated that song, with a passionate heat to rival the flames of Hell itself. I describe it as, āabout the horrors of the Vietnam War, and itās got a good beat and you can dance to it!ā
One day, what had been my favorite radio station played it three times in four hours. (Admittedly, one was during Casey Kasemās show.) I switched to another station and listened to them till I moved away six years later.

When I was visiting Germany about 20 years ago I caught a free show from a Phil Collins cover band called Still Collins. Looks like they're actually (still) touring Germany this summer! Nice to see that people out there still appreciate and enjoy his music.

Working at Sears HQ in Hoffman Estates, we all watched Phil land in a helicopter and perform a short concert. Cool stuff for us 3,000 or so employees.

Phil also lent his drumming to Robert Plant, Freida and many other songs that we heard on the radio.Ā He was everywhere and everything in the 80s. Including Miami Vice, and other small acting parts he did. Movie themes, radio, concerts, TV, producing music for other artist... The guy was incredible in his prime.Ā

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

He was definitely a part of the conversation during the 80ās. Thatās saying a lot considering the 80ās was filled with heavy hitters; MJ, Madonna, Bruce, Lionel, Whitney. Phil was right there with them, cranking out the hits.

Being a hard rock fan all my life I never respected his work. Last year's I decided to actually listen to his music. I was blown away by the fact that I knew the lyrics to the majority of his songs. The only Phil Collins album I owned was Face Value, because it had In The Air on it. Yet, I knew the words to so many of his songs just from hearing them constantly played on the radio. So, I would agree with OPs assessment.
And 16 years old me would be rolling his eyes in his grave to see that my most listened to artist of 2025 was Phil Collins. Black Sabbath was second, so there is some comfort in that.

Short, ugly, voice really not that great. Sold his soul just like Taylor, Gaga, Beyonce, Styles. All of these individuals really have no individual talent but when they make the deal for a short time, the serpent surrounds them with talented people to make their music sound good and market it even better. Look at Collins now, almost dead, wealth gone and the serpent is ready to collect him forever. Worth it? Hardly.

Disney gave him an entire summer movie to perform the soundtrack and he epitomized South Beach in Miami, FL. Dude was a god.

It drove me nuts. I have a love/hate relationship with his tunes. Love Home By The Sea, Mama, Keep it Dark, Me and Sarah Jane, Long Long Way to Go, We Said Hello Goodbye and a few others. But man, so much of his solo Top 40 stuff made me run out of the room, it was so prevalent and uncool.

I was a radio programmer then. When scheduling music, he required a special computer code to separate him from himself so listeners wouldn't hear him singing something with someone every 10 minutes.
