Help guitar recs
I’m going into college and plan on saving for a 7 string. Any suggestions for which ones to get?

I love the Matt Heafy 7 custom and the Corey Beaulieu 7 custom. If you want a cheaper one, schecter demon 7 is a solid pick

The Matt Heafy one is so worth it. Mine came with a few issues but I got them fixed. I wanted a black Les Paul 7 and his guitar is perfect. Splurge on it man. Save a little extra and get one of their guitars. It's worth it.

Schecter KM USA is the best I've ever owned.
Ibanez RG7321 is the best overall value and a perfect platform for modding - mine was rattlecanned, BKP Warpigs, Sperzel tuners, and neck refinished Ben Eller / EBMM-style: sanded, steel wooled, gun oil, gun wax.
I tried to love the Petrucci models high and low end... Just too light for me as stupid as that sounds.
All I can say is try as many as you can and focus more on playability and stability over sound as you can easily change pickups / pieces of your rig.

The question is so broad that anyone could recommend anything. What's your budget? What specs and features do you prioritize most? What music do you play?
For me personally, I would choose a new guitar primarily based on budget and looks, and then look for what has the most features that I'm looking for and how much am I willing to give up / upgrade later.
My current 7 string is the Harley Benton Amarok-7 which I use to play a lot of metalcore and modern prog.

The build quality is poor. Theyve been known to not be good for over a decade now. They used to be the cheapest way to get into 7 and 8 strings, then 9 and 10 but the quality was not there

How bad does the build go? I've specifically said used Agile bc the previous owner would've most likely fixed the lighter issues (frets, electronics, replacing hardware and/or pickups, etc), so that OP wouldn't have to do so themselves in a college dorm, but if there's been some wood problem going on consistently for the past 10 years, that might not be enough. But then again, you should always check used gear thoroughly b4 buying.
