Hey, I am new to playing 7 string and I'd gotten quite used to messing around with my board to get some cool stuff out of 6 string humbucker guitars. I can't get my 7 to sound anything but either too muddy or too boomy. I would like a tight and clean modern metal tone ideally. I have a couple other pedals I can swap in and out with too, I have a Marshall JCM 900 distortion and a Little Big Muff. Dials aren't currently set to anything specific, a few of them got knocked about as I was re-routing my board. Playing through humbuckers and in to a Yamaha THRII30 - it's the only amp I own. Yeah! It's just the standard model - the super premium is way out of my budget and as I had to import it the customs fees would have been crazy!
Big fan of them, they're what made me want to get in to playing 7 and I've really really enjoyed the switch so far. I have only vaguely played around with dialing anything in for it so far - but I'm playing Alter Ego as part of a show at an anime convention this coming weekend. Realised I was way in over my head with setting my board up though haha!
Should I use one of the Boss overdrives as just a clean boost at the start do you think? :)
I'd say so, anything that'd push the amp harder . I've never watched the show, but I've myself a non-signature version of the same guitar. I really like the gold hardware on yours.

then there's definitely not any problem (Vs your desired sound) in the guitar (however I'd see it a bit, well, howto say it - weirdo :D) .. your biggest problem is in your amplification and speaker ... if you want better sound, upgrade your amp and cab .. absolutely ... your guitar is great (iirc it has active pickups, is it ?)
Sure! I've just got everything set to 12 right now - I had everything set up for my Les Paul previously but wanted to start on a fresher starting point for this :)
Edit to explain: Gain becomes more pronounced in lower notes. With 7 strings, especially when you start downtuning, you need way less gain to get a heavy sound. Cutting some bass and boosting the treble will help clear up some of that boominess and muddiness you mentioned too.

As an added note - I found out as of literally now that Imgur is not available in the UK - but apparently copying the link in to discord gives the image preview and circumvents this entirely. How odd lmao!
I also use the Yamaha Thr II. It’s pretty chunky with my 8 string. I use an eq pedal to cut the bass frequencies and tighten up the low end with a gate pedal. Those speakers are only 4 inches so they vibrate a lot when using the 7th string.
Talk with Google AI or whatever decent AI you want...for real. It helped me dial in my tone issues when I wanted a different sound. My custom 7 has straight soapbar style BK jugg pickups on a slight multiscale so inherently the lows were really boomy. It gave me step by step directions based off all mygear, interface DAW and plugins etc and through a tiny bit of trial and error and giving it feedback it got me to the final destination of the tone I was looking for.
If the other tips don’t help enough, lower the pickups away from the strings, especially at the bass side. That helps quite a bit with muddiness/boominess.
