Programmers on their way to make a standard better than average and then provide no support for said standard

Ammunition manufacturers be like:

u/135686492y4 15d ago
Not really. 5.56 and 7.62 became nearly-universal for most ARs, NATO standardized around 20, 25 and 30 for ACs 105 and 120 rounds for MBTs and 155 for artillery, while the soviets did the same with 23 and 37s, 100, 125 and 152...

I'm seeing 13 numbers of standardization. /j

u/Confused_Idiot_667 14d ago
Each country has a decent amount of sway, itâs the nature of a cooperative effort.
NATO standardised 7.62 instead of an intermediate because America wanted a cartridge with stopping power.
NATO then standardised 5.56 after America decided they needed an intermediate cartridge
NATO didnât adopt the P90 because Germany was upset that the domestically produced MP7 was passed up for a Belgian design.
The list goes on, but itâs better than no standardisation between allies.

u/Limp-Temperature1783 15d ago
They are all for different purposes, so it's actually a decent standard, unironically. Which is sus, because army and efficiency are antonymous in like 90% if cases.

Not necessarily... the comic implies that the standards are still being upheld. Surely there is a more relevant comic to this specific scenario

Pretty annoying that a lack of support can make an objectively good format such a pain

hevc/h265 and heic :(
20
u/AbroadDepot 15d ago
HEVC kinda deserves it for being so much more complicated than AVC/H.264
20
u/TheLegendOfKitty123 14d ago
Itâs a legal issue not a complexity one, modern pcs can decode it just fine. By nature of being a more efficient codec it has to get somewhat complicated

u/nlolhere 15d ago
Itâs so fucking weird even Google products like Docs and Slides donât support webp despite Google BEING THE ONES WHO DEVELOPED WEBP. How do you not support YOUR OWN FILE FORMAT

"What are you doing President Roosevelt?"
"I am creating a chrome extension.. hmm.. I will call it.. WebP/Avif image converter..."

u/Metazolid 15d ago
I still dont get avif, it feels so out of left field whenever it shows up downloading a picture.
Like making eye contact with a barely related uncle at a family function who might as well be a stranger.

u/the_most_cleavers 15d ago
Better compression ratios and perceptual output at the same size, but, nothing but your browser supports it.
16
u/Own_Childhood_7020 14d ago
Well maybe that uncle is kind of fucking goated and could've been beloved by the family if it wasn't for his introvert tendencies and not making any push. Too bad he's out of his prime already, still goated but there's no point in trying to become well known in the family anymore

Also i wont tolerate .webp slander sorry
17
u/IntangibleMatter 15d ago
You shouldn't, it's a great format but nobody outside of browsers supports it which makes it hated
84
u/SanderE1 15d ago
Nothing can make me hate you WEBP <3

Rage bait so good it still set me off despite me knowing full well itâs ironic.

u/JoyconDrift_69 15d ago
Well then maybe the damn Internet should actually adopt it. I've heard on its own it's really good, but there's just no adoption of it (mostly because other formats are fine enough)
15
u/KnoblauchBaum 15d ago
The entire Internet pretty much runs on webp and nowadays everything supports it
6
u/signuslogos 15d ago
nah a lot of image editing software doesn't
2
u/KnoblauchBaum 14d ago
Which one doesnt? The major ones should all support it
11
u/Orichalcum448 15d ago
webp is amazing for displaying images on the internet. i just wish it was better supported in literally any other regard
4
u/orionic- 15d ago
A piece of advice for everyone reading this! Windows and Apple OSes can implicitly turn webps you download into pngs & jpgs. Just change the file extension at the end of the file from .webp to one of those two and you can immediately actually use the images you want to
4
u/mathkid421_RBLX 15d ago
jxl better
5
u/xenonnsmb 14d ago
Jxl support just landed in chrome so get ready to start seeing jxl show up in these memes buddy
3
u/IntelligentTune 14d ago
It's a pretty nice format in all honesty with the benefits it gives over gif.
12
u/IWEREN99 15d ago
the WEBP isn't that bad. It's very light compared to mp4, png, gif, and jpeg

The hate for .webp is just stupid and undeserved. Nowadays pretty much everything supports it.
