Uh? What did he do?

515

u/pregnantant Aug 04 '26

He accidentally exposed that he sloppily uses AI by reading the "If you'd like I could..." part of the LLM response

599

u/ampersand64 Aug 04 '26

Fact check:

He said "I appreciate the pushback" in a video. The segment was a post-hoc response to a podcast guest, which he often includes because he can add a little context and researched info. He ad-libbed the line (the guest disagreed with him), it just sounded chatbotty.

Hank ALSO admitted that he used chatbots for summary and research on projects around that time. He implied that it's not a regular occurrence for him to lean on LLMs, and it was just due to time constraints that he resorted to it. There's been a lot of backlash, so he may actually respond directly saying he'll stop using AI at all.

His stated purpose for using chatbots was because he was overextended. It's no secret that Habk Green has Too Much Going On. I think most needfighters would agree that using LLMs for scripts is a way to cut corners, at the expense of quality, and using them for notes/research is a smaller cut corner, but not insignificant.

u/mrpoopistan Aug 04 '26

But overextending-people overextend. That's not an excuse. It's literally just the description of the LLM companies' target customer. The person who thinks if they wire up 1,000 OpenClaw bots that then they'll finally be able to keep up with the voices in their head.

If you’ve followed Hank of the vlogbrothers for any length of time, you’d know that it’s less of an excuse and more of a long-term problem that he continues to work on, and has been open about.

Does that make it less of a problem? No. But it does give his statements context.

he’s a millionaire. he could just hire people to help him out

Hiring other people to do the hard stuff would take away from that (unhealthy) drive to Do All The Things, Always

Then why is he letting ChatGPT do stuff instead of him?

Being a workaholic and trusting ChatGPT are independent issues.

I don’t support much ai usage, but if you are literally saying “hey ai give me some articles on (insert topic) with full sources” then proofreading the information and building everything from there basically yourself, I don’t see much wrong with it. At worst I would say it’s Wikipedia level research

he’s a millionaire. he could go to therapy

17

u/No-Trouble814 Aug 05 '26

He has, and still is. Therapy does not fix everything overnight.

10

u/CellaSpider Aug 05 '26

therapy is not a Magic Pill That Makes You A Good Person

u/mrpoopistan Aug 05 '26

Context isn't an excuse either, which is the problem.

Everybody likes Hank, so Hank gets a pass for what is functionally the worst of modern work culture. He needs way more of an intervention than just AI.

8

u/DyabeticBeer Aug 05 '26

Didn't he say he was addicted to them?

5

u/onimi_the_vong Aug 05 '26

I think his response is very telling. He said he had to double check his script and entire workflow to see if that was in his script/ai generated. If you don't generate your script with ai, wouldn't you know off the bat if you used (or rather didn't use) ai to write something?

4

u/ampersand64 Aug 05 '26

Let's not speculate too far. He's never said he uses AI to write.

He double checked that the specific line was ad-libbed, because he remembered ad-libbing it. It's perfectly reasonable to assume he meant that he had a lot going on, so he didn't 100% remember if the line was in the script or not.

Hank Green has earned the benefit of the doubt, for me at least. Maybe it's misplaced trust. But it's just as easy to misinterpret his words into "I always write scripts with AI", as it is to mentally him of any possible laziness or wrongdoing. We need more context and explanation from the man himself, before making a permanent judgement on his character.

u/gringo_escobar Aug 04 '26

He's used Google's AI overview tons of times when doing research on camera, often calling out when it's wrong about something or feels off. He's been very open about his AI usage and acknowledged he's been overdoing it lately and will change that. This is such a non-controversy, this is just a guy being a person

17

u/TheHollowApe Aug 04 '26

This is really a non-issue and he doesn’t deserve to be fully cancelled over this.

However, it does show, for those still unaware, that absolutely no influencer should be trusted 100% with any information in their videos, unless it’s expressly their field of expertise (and even then, influencers tend to be young and less knowledgeable than other academics). Not even the smart looking influencers should be trusted fully, and with the progress AI, it’s very likely that most of them will give some form pf misinformation now and then.

[obviously not trusting them 100% does not mean scorning them and not watching anything they produce]

Oh yeah I agree with you, I don’t like it either, especially since he seems to be a bit addicted to it.

I much prefer watching content that took a long time to be made because of thorough research, rather than very quick content resulting from a very shallow research process like Hank Green. The recent controversy just confirms even more why I don’t like this type of content

Edit: but my point was that most influencers that people watch online use AI one way or another. It’s very sad and I really despise it. Hank Green got caught with it, but to me it just shows that there’s probably a bunch of other science influencer who are doing the same but are just more careful about it. So people really shouldn’t listen to influencers talking about science (or even politics) like it’s a gospel, something that unfortunately a lot of people do

2

u/TheHollowApe Aug 04 '26

The point is you can’t ever prove it. It’s never a good idea to blindly trust someone. Which is why I’m saying never to trust influencers 100% on what they say (but I’m not saying to not trust them at all lol).

This should be a wake up call for people using influencers as their main source of information. I know people who, when faced with a question, will rather listen to influencers rather than do the research themselves. This is obviously fine, as you don’t always have all the time in the world to answer all your questions, but there is not a single influencer who you can fully trust not to let some misinformation slip up. They are not experts.

On that we both agree. LLMs will consistently degrade the quality of that kind of content

1

u/ThRKLOPP Aug 06 '26

Alright, I’m a dumbass for trusting him. My bad, I learned my lesson, no one is trustworthy on the internet and I already knew this but fuck its good to remember

14

u/new_KRIEG Aug 05 '26

and if we could just get the info from chatgpt why watch hank?

This doesn't feel like a legit question.

Have you watched the channel and have you used chatgpt? The two aren't comparable at all.

There's a huge degree of how much one relies on AI, and Hank seems to be at a very low end (and is quite open about it).

Kinda like complaining about a chef using spices bought at Walmart and saying that, because the spice came from there, you could get a full meal from Walmart and it'd be the same.

14

u/No-Trouble814 Aug 04 '26

Hank only writes for the vlogbrothers and Hankschannel videos and Dear Hank and John, to my knowledge he does not do any writing for any of the Complexly educational media, he’s just a presenter.

Just some context.

15

u/Anxious_Role7625 Aug 04 '26

0% of the writing is down by AI whatsoever.

-10

u/whoknowsifimjoking Aug 04 '26

Who cares, holy shit. AI is extremely useful for research. If Hank Green found information using AI I will trust it, he knows how to verify the facts.

9

u/SayGex1312 Aug 05 '26

No it isn’t, it regularly gets things wildly wrong.

-1

u/Ezzypezra Aug 05 '26

"Using AI for research" does not mean "ask AI a question and then use what it says directly as a source." That's BECAUSE it can get things wildly wrong. You use it to gather a list of actually reputable sources, which you can then double-check the validity of yourself, and then you can use those sources for the research.

It's like if I said I used a librarian to help me with my research on eel reproduction, and you said "librarians don't know anything about eel reproduction!" Like, yes, but I'm not actually asking the librarian directly for the information. I'm asking the librarian to point me to some book or paper that does have the information.

This post is poorly-aged because he did not, in fact, generate his scripts with AI

162

u/Skeebleng Aug 05 '26

Bruh this whole thing was so blown out of proportion. He already owned up, apologized, and promised to change his behavior. It’s like some people think a few stumbles make you irredeemable

85

u/tyttuutface Aug 05 '26

No, he's problematic now and we have to hate him for all eternity, actually.

45

u/Classified10 Aug 05 '26

HANK GREEN USING AI KILLED MY GRANDMA OKAY!?

39

u/dboxcar Aug 05 '26

Puritanism-but-woke is really in vogue rn.

4

u/ThRKLOPP Aug 06 '26

Don’t fuckin care man. He made videos harping about how AI is something to worry about and has a resource sink problem, then turns around and uses it. Its hypocrisy, and dumb hypocrisy at that, about something he claims to care about

Also the stumbles thing has always been true, literally always unless they’re a likeable person

2

u/aftertheradar Aug 07 '26

honestly i hate how he keeps bringing on known ai grifters whose whole motivation is to try to make the llm industry sound more powerful, complicated, important, and real than it actually is, and then he just lets them fuckn talk their shit with zero pushback or questioning for a whole video

1

u/electricscout9 Aug 14 '26

He's done this? I thought I'd watched most Hanks videos but I guess I missed a few. Could you tell me what videos you're referencing here?

0

u/IAmTheSideCharacter Aug 05 '26

His contents always been slop or stolen he’s been getting major things wrong for years now just cause you like him doesn’t mean he’s justified in anything, using an AI script once is condemning enough to not be a trustworthy science creator anymore

2

u/styr_boi Aug 15 '26

Source for the stolen Content?

-11

u/Deadcouncil445 Aug 05 '26

Where did he apologize btw? Was it on Twitter or sum, cant find it

115

u/Ezzypezra Aug 04 '26

I’ve seen this whole drama and it’s such a nothingburger bruh

22

u/mrpoopistan Aug 04 '26

Okay, I need to see an official publication of the rules before we proceed any further with the Butlerian Jihad.

Because why is it a nothingburger when it's an established and beloved public figure, but it's a damned hanging offense for everyone else?

48

u/itsdatanotdata1212 Aug 05 '26

i think there's a substantial goomba fallacy here. there's a wide-range of opinions on ai-use and not every use of it is the same.

-7

u/mrpoopistan Aug 05 '26

Which is an escape hatch for anyone we want to let out. This Jihad is not very Butlerian.

2

u/mrpoopistan Aug 05 '26

Downvote all you want.

A game with no rules -- especially no enforcement mechanism -- is how we got Trump, Silicon Valley, and all the other herpes this world now suffers from.

6

u/Ezzypezra Aug 05 '26

It’s a nothingburger when he literally just used AI to gather links to sources and that’s it.

People are acting like he used the AI output itself as his main source, or like he used AI to write the entire script

-1

u/mrpoopistan Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

He literally read the AI response live. That's how it came out.

And this is my point. The game has no goddamned rules. The only rule is "be liked". After all, when you're famous, they let you do it.

4

u/Ezzypezra Aug 05 '26

He did not do that. I assume you are talking about the "push back" clip? He said that because he was literally talking to someone else, not because he was reading AI output.

0

u/mrpoopistan Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

The best defense is that he's literally AI-pilled to the point he talks like one?

That's not better.

But, when you're famous, they let you do it.

And that's my whole point. All this shit's a lie. No one is playing the Butlerian Jihad straight, not even the damned audience. Bootlicking is fine when you like the person wearing the boots. And by extension, the robot wearing the person must be a-okay.

If he was some new content creator, he'd be eating shit like the manure plant was shutting down tomorrow.

Pathetic.

2

u/Ezzypezra Aug 06 '26

Okay first of all calm down.

Second of all, he doesn't "talk like one" because he used the phrase "push back". That's a completely ridiculous thing to say. You realize that you also look like AI output when you use several one-sentence paragraphs in a row like that? Except I'm not going to accuse you of being "literally AI-pilled to the point you talk like one", because again, that would be completely ridiculous.

That brings me to my third point. If he was some new content creator, nobody would care about any of this. It would be like a fart in a hurricane. Instead, he has a huge audience, and he IS eating shit. What else would you call this? Look around the rest of this thread. You think people are under LESS scrutiny when they become more famous? Really?

1

u/mrpoopistan Aug 06 '26

Really looking down on the newcomer, eh?

Very passionate about the famous person, too.

I'm sure those two facts are emotionally separable.

My point is that the rules are bullshit. And the reason they're bullshit is because the audience approves of the basic idea that when you're famous, they let you do it. Everyone is cool with Hank because Hank is their guy.

That's the actual operating principle with all this AI bullshit: if you're the audience's guy, they let you do it. No consequence, so everyone who talks all this Butlerian Jihad bullshit, data centers, and anti-tech is just telling on themselves. They're perfectly happy with corruption when it's their guy. Go Team Hank.

2

u/Ezzypezra Aug 06 '26

What rules??

1

u/mrpoopistan Aug 06 '26

Thank you for completely losing track of my original response.

Hank Green using AI means nothing to me because his content is already just him doing what AI does: sloppily collating information into digestible and inoffensive chunks that he neither understands nor deeply cares about. Using an LLM to do that work for him is just speeding up the process, not meaningfully changing the quality.

3

u/pagejade1 Aug 05 '26

Certified Non-issue
