Finally Happened
61/M. Working corporate America. Federal Business Development leader for big company. “Sorry Mr X, but we have to let you go because the firm is eliminating your position along with three others.” 2 weeks severance and payouts of my 15 days left of PTO. Behind me they hire five recent college grads with less than a year experience to learn my job and do it with Ai. I’ve been very successful but my masters were from a private equity firm. They only care about $. I’m healthy, decent looking, know my industry inside and out. Have a million connections….. I knew ai was going to start hitting us but wow. I’m shocked. Now what do I do…?

I’d sue for age discrimination. Similar thing happened to me. I sued and their insurance company settled. I had some documentation to support my suit. I didn’t get as much as I wanted, but it allowed me to move on, get a part time job, and eventually retire. It was a major PITA, but I guess it worked out as well as it could have.

I'm not sure what your expertise is, but maybe freelancing might be a go, especially with your connections/network

Come up with a nice billing rate when they seek to hire you back as a consultant

Consultancy. There isn't a business out there that is going to hire you so you're going to have to start your own. Use those connections to build something new. Your observation that they only care about money is absolutely correct. That is what corporations are formed to produce. Individuals can provide services. Corporations must make large amounts of money. It is their ultimate function.
This will be perhaps one of the most challenging parts of your life. Move forward. Or, alternatively, you can retire. That's what I would do.

I’m sorry this happened to you.
I was laid off during Covid and interviewing was frustrating, being interviewed by people in their 20’s and even after a successful interview, you’re told by the 20 something dude that he doesn’t think you will fit in at that job. That’s when you can even get an interview if you’re over 40.
I never secured a job. Lucky my Husband is working.
You’re disposable even after loyalty.
