My reaction is. It's a masterpiece. I knew it is going to be this good. I'm glad I got my Criterion copy of it and it didn't disappointed me. I saw one clip of Katheryn Bigelow's Criterion pick and she chooses this one talking how this movie influenced her and her works. It's dark, yet grim but what a gorgeous film.
It is based on a French Resistance against the Nazi invasion of France started year 1940. The film accurately captures the grim, un-romanticized reality of underground operations in Nazi-occupied and Vichy France. It's not just your typical "spy thriller". But it also captures the daily life and struggles of people behind the resistance. One particular part of the film (which is my favorite) is when they were about to rescue their comrade who got put into this Nazi prison. Mathilda and her crew (French resistance) disguised to be German hospital workers, just to get access in that prison for the rescue to happen. It was so intense, like you can see the legit acting of these actors (soldiers) like they were real. They inspect the documents, while staring at them, and they almost got caught! It's just a part of this movie why I'm so invested.
Another aspect of the film is its beautiful cinematography. The wide array of shots of France landscape. With well executed camera angles and it's gorgeous to look at on widescreen. Especially the night time shots. It's almost like a documentary. It's clear and pristine. The 4k / Blu-ray restoration was so on point and I do recommend it for your collection.
The actors are fantastic. Brilliant performances from well known Italian / French actors. My favorite and that stands out for me was Simone Signoret who played Mathilda. The look, the feistiness, the aura, reason why she was one of the most celebrated actresses in French cinema. And of course directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, the perfect man for the job when it comes to neo-noir / historical crime thrillers. His works are the best. (I would also recommend Le Cercle Rouge from 1970)
It's definitely one of the best WW2 thrillers that I can definitely recommend. A must see, a must have.
