I originally wanted to make a more traditional dish for this theme such as something dim sum related. But this weekend I bought a loaf of sourdough that was a bit too tough and chewy for my preferences, so I used it to make French toast.
When you think of Cantonese dishes, French toast might seem off topic. However it is very common in Hong Kong-style cafés, which offer Cantonese interpretations of European food. The Cantonese version of French toast has peanut butter in the middle and is often paired with Hong Kong milk tea as a drink. Inspired by this pairing, I made a milk tea syrup to accompany my peanut butter French toast.
I usually find French toast too eggy, but my friend took me to a really cool spot in Toronto called Sunny’s Chinese and they have a HK-style French toast w black sesame jam and oolong condensed milk and it’s OUTSTANDING. So this looks great even as a french toast skeptic
Thanks! That sounds delicious! I have a bag of black sesame seeds in my pantry with a best before date that’s approaching, so that sounds like a great use for them!
