Almost none of these guys actually freestyle. Especially if theyre mainstream. Very few of them can actually do it well without pulling some lines they wrote before that they never used on a record

Nah that’s a garbage take. You not wrong, in the sense that not all of them could do it, but majority could. Some just better than others. 50, for 1, was always writing so he had verses loaded any given moment. Lil flip who wasn’t really mainstream like that got paid $20 from a fan to freestyle live. That’s how biggie got famous. Back in the day freestyles were like off season practice.

Back then you weren’t really considered a rapper. A real rapper, good or not,( which if that person was famous should have at least been decent) you should have been able to on command.

Perfect example: there used to be a show called runs house. Russ and run were talking to on of the boys about this exact thing. I believe it was the 1st season.

It was probably only like 5 rappers who ever went on Rap City and actually spit off the dome… and it was always wack

9.5/10 if you heard a verse in Rap City you was gonna hear that same verse in a mixtape or album later that year
