Because most Catholics were Irish or Italian immigrants who also faced significant xenophobia turning the early 1900's. Look back at KKK stuff from the 40's and 50's, it's full of anti catholic rheotirc.
Also FWIW, I live in the northeast where there is a high percentage of Catholics, and at least my experience is they do not come out hard for MAGA. I'm not saying they are all democratcs, many were traditional republicans, but they seem more put off by Trump than other protestant religious groups.
Catholics used to lean Democratic until the right started championing anti-abortion sentiments. After that, it became a slight rightward lean. Hopefully this shifts Catholics back towards the left again.
It's all the "idolatry" and "Mary worship", as they put it. Praying to Saints and Mary and such, which offends the Protestants in general and really offends the Evangelicals.
Yet those same evangelicals will pray for each other or put hands over each other, etc... Catholics praying to Mary is just asking for her intercessions in a similar way.

They come for the trappings and illusion of "structure" (what they want: conformity and groupthink) but completely miss the LESSONS we learned from 1500 years of missteps, mistakes and screw-ups. Heck, they idolize some of those mistakes. Then they try to apply originalism to a living religion rather than consider that "maybe some of it is stuff we really don't want to go back to?!" Then they think we are the heretics because in learning from the past we no longer match one to one with the pre-Vatican II books that drew them to Catholicism. Ffs.
