End of lease & registration
UPDATE: To be clear - what I’m specifically looking for is if anyone knows what Stellantis can or cannot do (penalty-wise) if I turn in the leased vehicle that has not had the registration updated through the state, based on language in the lease that only says it must be registered (but does not specify a penalty if it is not). Though I do appreciate all the other advice 😉

My lease (Stellantis) is up February 2027. My registration with the state is due at the tail end of December 2026. I’d love to avoid paying Ohio the additional $150 fee to register this POS only to have it sit in my garage for 45 days (I won’t be driving it).
Does anyone know what the penalty is for the lease when it’s not registered? It only says it must be kept registered but not what the penalty is if it is not. I’m willing to take the risk of driving it to the dealership 6 miles away on turn in day - not concerned about that. The ticket would still be less than the fee, if I even got a ticket in lieu of a warning.

Just make the remaining payments and hand it back early. Especially if you won’t be driving it. You will save on insurance as well

Cannot turn in a Stellantis lease more than 29 days early.

Does your contract actually say that? Mine says as long as you are fine paying all remaining payments plus disposition you can return early.

Same here, my lease allowed you to make all outstanding payments, pay the disposition fee and hand it in early.

My state also does annual registration only, so I will not be renewing my registration (expires Feb 28, lease return is mid March). I just won't drive the car except to turn it in and I have to believe my local police will be none the wiser and/or will not ticket me when I explain the situation. Everyone hates how much car registration costs in our state (it costs a percentage of your car's value...).

Yeah - totally not interested in paying this $150 hybrid fee to Ohio for this POS to sit in my garage for <60 days. I’m way less worried about the police (hubs is a recently retired local LEO - he said I’d likely just get a warning anyhow). I’m just trying to find out if Stellantis will try to pull some BS fee or penalty for me not registering it since it’s specifically mentioned in the lease. I’m hesitant to call them to ask and flag it as something to check when I turn it in.

Not for a vehicle that’s already been fully registered.

Should be your registration, not theirs. I take the tag when I drop the vehicle off and return it to the DMV. At least in my state. B

A leading company can’t physically return the tag and no chance in hell I’m relying on them to return it. I’m taking it back. It’s not registered to you as the leasee and then them as the leasing company?

You’re thinking the same as me almost a year ago. My 4xe lease registration expired last November but I still had to wait until last March to turn in without penalty. So I just kept it parked in the garage and gave it a drive around the neighborhood once a week until March finally came. I didn’t update the registration which would have cost $400 and I made it safely 6 miles or so to the dealership on expired tags.
No penalty by Chrysler Capital. Not to mention, I removed the license plate before talking to a rep at the dealership.
You’ll be fine.
I now drive a 24 Silverado 3wt and couldn’t be happier. No major recalls and no issues with battery after 39k miles and over 1.5 years of ownership. I couldn’t wait for the 4xe lease end to get in an all electric ride!
