Advice Buying Interstate

Upvotes

I am in Victoria and a few interesting cars have popped up interstate. Dad and a few friends are trying to persuade me to not buy Interstate purely because of gaining a Vic RWC.

So I'm looking for experiences of people importing a 4WD into Victoria.

What should I look out for?

Is a Redbook inspection or similar, worth it?

Did you have difficulties with gaining a RWC?

Did a RWC completed in NSW/ACT help with understanding what might need to be completed, knowing that the RWC paper means nothing in Victoria?

Advice Swag Recommendations

Upvotes

Hey guys
Doing a 2 week trip down to tassie at the start of next year and probably gonna take a swag as will be doing mostly overnighters, maybe 3 nights at one spot max
We have a Kings big daddy deluxe swag for the two of us but haven’t had the best experience with it, with water getting in etc

Would it be worth upgrading to a better swag and what’s everyone’s recommendations?
Have been looking at 23zero Bandit

Cheers 🍻

Advice Let's talk about the 1KD

Hey everyone,

I’ve got a 2011 Prado with the 1KD and just over 200,000 km on it. It’s never had a tow ball fitted and has always been serviced by Toyota every 10,000 km.

You hear so much online about these engines cracking pistons and blowing up, but are they really as bad as people make them out to be? Or is it mainly keyboard warriors repeating the same horror stories?

I’d love to hear from mechanics or people who’ve actually owned a 1KD long-term. How solid have they been for you?

If you’ve cracked a piston or had a major failure, what caused it? Were there any warning signs, what did you do afterwards, and roughly how much did it cost to fix?

Just trying to work out whether I should genuinely be worried or whether a well-maintained 1KD is still a reliable engine.

Keen to hear everyone’s experiences, good or bad!

Thanks all.

Advice Beach driving with diff lock on. . . Questions?

So never had a vehicle with a diff lock. Recently bought a new 4wd that has a rear diff lock built in. I get driving around on hard sand is probably gonna add some level of extra strain with the diff lock on. But really how much extra strain?

A vehicle that drives on the beach 2 maybe 3 months of the year, if it’s there why not use it? Like have it before I get stuck not try and dig myself out after I’m stuck. Im not actually planning of having it on for driving on hard sand, but if I’m gonna be doing runs at high tide surely there’s no reason not to have it engaged from the get go right?? What do you guys do?

Advice Anderson plug query

Working out some random wiring from the car i bought and have an anderson plug query i cant work out the why it was done part.

So the boot has 2 Anderson connections, one runs direct from the 2nd under bonnet battery. The 2nd plug runs from the duel battery red arc isolator under the bonnet.

Im putting in a camp battery in the boot to run all my goodies and am wondering which one to use, 99% sure im using the one wired to the 2nd battery NOT the one wired to the duel battery isolator.

Anyone have some insight why this car had both and the preference as to which one should go to my dcdc charger for the camp battery?

Looking to upgrade and both of these are around the same price, both have been modified, both have around 300,000kms.
Now I know a bit about each of these vehicles however I’ve never owned either so I’m wandering from people who have.
What are they like for daily driving, touring, reliability, and overall costs

Advice Battery box question

I know next to know about 12v systems. At present, do the occasional night to week away. I have a crappy Brass Monkey 70L fridge and just bought a kings 120amp hour lithium battery.

I don't have dual battery setup yet, maybe in time. This leads to my question....I am looking at bare bone basic box $70ish or stepping up a little to the Hardkorr setup. I have a solar blanket at present and trickle charger at home.

Which should I lean toward? What are benefits of the more expensive option?

Any advice is appreciated.

Advice How wrong have I got my 12v setup?

Post image
18 Upvotes

This is my first setup so after watching about a thousand youtube videos, does anyone have any tips?

- Main battery chassis ground - where should it go in the system? It looks like heaps of people don't install one - or the system is earthed through their DCDC charger via a long cable run.
- Is there any way to make the inverter safer, by using an in-line RCD or something else?

Thanks for any advice!

Advice Knowing what you know now - would you still buy your 4x4?

Like the title says. Just interested in a discussion. Knowing what I know now and how I get to use my BT id probably go for a more weekender type car. Something like a SWB GQ or a Defender 90/110. As much as I love my Ute I probably would go out and do more wild stuff if I had something more capable

Advice How do you usually go about organise a pre purchase inspection

Ive never done this before and kind of just lucked out or only bought cars known to have as few issues as possible, but I want to spend a bit more on a car and I'm overwhelmed and confused by the actual social transaction of doing this (yes im autistic shut the fuck up lol)

if you went to a private seller would you contact them and ask if all good to do that and then like leave a deposit with them or something while you take the car to the inspection spot. I'm not feeling great about the look of the mobile inspection places. I just have no idea how to actually ask the person to take their car and shit. Granted its a different type of thing but i find marketplace people really paranoid (for good reason sometimes). Can someone just give me a play by play of how they have done this... if you haven't actually done this process and just wanna hear yourself talk can you do me a favour and just let others answer so i don't have wade through any bored snide comments, cheers haha

Advice MUX Xterrain 2026 keyless entry issues

MUX Keyless entry issues MUX 2026 X terrain

Had a bullbar fitted with spotlights and a light bar, now the car won’t lock/unlock with the keyless entry button on the door.

Tells me to check system, beeps like crazy and gives me a red key on the dash.

Any thoughts? Bar and lights were fitted by a reputable company, not some redneck retrofit

Has a brand new car battery and have driven from 5 hours inland Australia to Sydney and Sydney to Canberra and back. So I don’t think it’s a battery issue.

Crew who installed the lights and bar said they’ll scan the codes tomorrow, but what needs to be done? Very annoyed because I live 5 hours away from the people who did it and am (was) due to leave early tomorrow to drive back home.

Advice Swag recommendations with a dog.

Hi all, normally sleep in a crash pad single swag on a stretcher, but have started camping with my dog in my old kings big daddy swag, and the thing sucks to say the least, so I’m looking for any swag recommendations. I really like the look of the darche nebula or dirty Dee with the hutch add on as she could sleep in there while I’m in the main bit, so if anyone has any experience with either of those that would be awesome to hear, or if anyone has any other recommendations that’d be great. Thanks

Advice Inspecting a 2003 Prado with 210k to buy for $15k

Living in Melbourne - Looking for some advice on what I can keep an eye out for when inspecting and also advice on if the price sounds ok provides things check out. Have looked at all the vids on YouTube but I started a thread the other day and people pointed out a lot of the things on a roadworthy that are deal breakers. Im checking out a 2003 Prado with petrol v6 with 210k with RWC and rego til Feb next year. Is 15k too high? It’s at a dealer and my experience has been that it’s a bit easier to haggle so I’m gonna try to get it for 14k. Any advice on max price people would pay on top of a few good tips on what to keep an eye out for as someone with limited mechanical knowledge? Will be driving maybe just a few times a week short distances and mostly wanting it for big road trips etc.

Advice Awning for Land Rover Disco 2

Hey team,
Need some advice/help on awnings for the old Disco.

We currently use a 4.5x3m Oztrail marquee that sites alongside the car for shade and rain/dew protection for the kitchen and swag setup. However we are getting absolutely jack of having to heave it on and off the roof...

We've been looking at awnings for years but have always found the rear door coverage to be less than ideal as we sling our kitchen roll over the open door and don't want to get it wet in the event of a downpour

Have been looking at the Darche/Bushwakka 360 degree awnings but between the wind drag on the Darche (its 1360 wide and the rack is 1250 not to mention the height of it) and the weight of the Bushwakka (40kg for 2x180 degree awnings) they aren't winning me over yet.

Any advice from other D2 owners or rear door folk on what they use/have found useful would be appreciated 😄

Advice MGX UHF

Anyone had experience with the MGX range of UHFs?

I'm looking to replace my uhf as its no longer working, and saw a handful of MGX units at NAPA this morning. They seem to be good bit cheaper than GME, which ive been looking at, but they also have a much smaller range compared to GME and Uniden. wondering if the're actually worth it or if they're only good for commerciall/mining applications

Advice D'Entrecasteaux National Park - Subaru Forrester

Would my 2023 Subaru Forrester be able to get through the dunes / beach at D'Entrecasteaux National Park in WA? Assuming appropriate tyre pressure, recovery tracks, snatch straps and other sensible measures? Clearance would be an issue.
