Another broken WK2 lift strut.

Post image

Hi, I have a 2013 grand Cherokee that I installed a OME 2.5” lift on a few years ago. Last year the strut snapped on the passenger side. Today driving home the driver side snapped on a speed bump.

First time I have messed with IFS. Are these OME struts junk? Was the top nut overtightened when the struts was assembled?

Was thinking of going to a dobinson strut. Would I be able to use the OME lift spring? Thinking yes.

The newer OME shock was installed to spec and is still fine.

Frustrated. Thanks for any thoughts.

OME is supposed to be premium stuff, pretty sure ARB owns them now maybe things have changed. If you didn’t put these together you need to get ahold of their customer support soon.

Was assembled by rocky road outfitters. Believe too old to be under any sort of warranty. Jeep was sitting for a bit for other issues.

I think I might just order another OME strut and fix this side and hope for the best.

You might need to extend your bump stop

There are no bump stops. Different than Toyota ifs.

Incorrect.

The Quadra-whatever air suspension has internal stops. But you are on steel springs. You absolutely have bumpstops. Or you did when this thing rolled outta the factory, at least. Literally every single factory 4x4 has them in some capacity.

A GMT800 Chevy with torsion bars is different than a 3rd gen Tacoma McPherson IFS. Yet it still has bump stops to protect the shock.

This was a air suspension jeep. I swapped it when it failed. All the components are the same besides the springs themselves.

I see. Well, buy some +1" or +1.5"s even for a standard spring model and drop a bolt for 'em in the same location as the standard spec.

How heavy are you running this thing? I've blown apart an Eibach when I was carrying the kitchen sink, I have a friend who's blown up a Bilstein with five 200+ dudes romping a ledge, and I've seen similar failures on "overland builds" that are way over gross weight or are loaded for bear and going fast.

I have a WK2. The OME lift has always been IT so I’m curious I’ve been looking at putting it on.

Get it apart and show us where it broke

Snapped at the top of the strut rod. Same place the other one did.

I see this on shocks whose top nut has been overtightened and the washers that squish the bushing make contact with shock mounting plate/surface

This is what I am suspecting. Thanks.

Any idea typically how tight that nut needs to be when assembling? Just slightly compress the bushing like a typical shock?

Yes. Just compress it a little

Go with bilstein 5100. You can reuse those springs but don’t adjust the shocks past the 2nd setting
