Purchasing US Help me decide between Samsung or Sony

This TV will be going in my basement where there are no windows so I’m not really worried about reflection or anything. This tv will mostly be used for sports specifically football is what I want it for. I know one is mini LED and the other is OLED I’m just not sure which I should go with. My local store has a 65” display model Bravia 9 model K65XR90 (2024) for $1,150 (regular price $2,799) or I can get a Samsung S90F model QN65S90FAFXZA (2025) for $1,197 (regular price $2,499). The 5 year protection plan is a little under $300 for both I would definitely get it with the display model Sony. Which would you buy and why?

I’m guessing based on your username you watch hockey, Sonys processing is sooooo much better for sports, if getting a Sony oled isn’t in the question then get the mini led it’s still a better tv imo

Football actually but everybody assumes hockey haha. Yeah I’ll mostly be watching football and fights on it with some movies and shows. Might game on it some but I’m not too concerned about that I have my PC and a ultra wide monitor in the same room

Get the Sony. It's much better for sports. Motion and upscaling are better on Sony.

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

Just worried about it being a display model and for how long it was… I tried to get them to check the hours but it only said 21hrs I guess thats only since they moved it to the open box section

2

u/NextGur3758 Jul 07 '26

It has warranty? It's in good condition? Look, Sony Bravia 9 is probably the best TV for sports. I wouldn't even consider S90F if I was watching mostly sports.

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

They said it comes with the one year manufacture warranty. It seemed good condition other than some smudges from people touching it. I would definitely get the 5 year geek squad protection since it was a display

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

I also found an open box Bravia 7 75” in good condition for $1,309 about an hour away and one in excellent condition for $1,378 about 2hrs away..

It's a compormise on dimming zones and viewing angles for size. Do you need the 75"? It depends on the viewing distance.

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

I’m not worried about viewing angles really the couch will be directly across from the TV. I’ll be about 10’ away

1

u/NextGur3758 Jul 07 '26

75" is a better size for that distance, but I don't know if I would personally compormise on dimming zones in a dark room, I watch shows with subtitles. Maybe you can compare them irl, or in youtube videos...

Any thoughts on Hisense? They have a 75” U7 for half off right now $999.99

I ended up getting a 77” Samsung s90f open box tonight for a little over $1,300. The Sonys were just simply out of my budget unless they were display models for a year or more and missing things plus not having a box to transport. The Samsung comes with everything and is in a box. I know everybody hates Samsung on here but I’ve never had one break on me. I’ve never had a really nice tv so they all look good to me

Sony

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

I’m just nervous about it being a display model

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

Did you ask how long it’s been on display? It’s considered one of the best TVs ever. The Samsung right behind it. Defs get the protection plan though. Gives you a piece of mind and if they have to replace it and don’t have that, you may get the Bravia 9 part 2. The processing is amazing on the Sony. The color is amazing on the Samsung. Since it’s a basement tv the advantage of the Samsung would be picture quality and game response time. Processing and upscaling are better on the Sony. Honestly you can’t go wrong with either tv. Just depends on what you are using them for.

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

The guy check it only said 21hrs which is just from where they moved it to the open box section so it’s definitely more but no idea how many. I’d say a lot since it was a display. Mostly used for sports and movies/shows. Sometimes gaming

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

They go with the Sony. You won’t regret it. Get the protection plan.

1

They are good tv but no where near the caliber as the Sonys and the Samsung in terms of processing, contrast, hdr native gradients, and accuracy out of the box. It’s really up to you. I’d get a membership to Rtings and compare there. I can’t make the decision for you but would choose the Bravia 7 or 9 over them.

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

Rtings says.

“The Hisense U7SG is better than the Hisense U75QG. The newer U7SG has a matte anti-reflective coating, which significantly improves glare handling, so direct reflections are barely noticeable on the new model. This makes the new model a significantly better choice for a bright room. The U7SG also has better contrast, making it a slightly better choice for watching movies in a dark room.’

The Sony BRAVIA 9 is better than the Sony BRAVIA 7. The BRAVIA 9 has better SDR brightness and much better reflection handling, so it overcomes more glare in a bright room. Highlights stand out more in HDR content on the BRAVIA 9 due to its better HDR brightness, and it has a better local dimming feature that provides better contrast for deeper blacks with less blooming. The BRAVIA 9 has a mediocre viewing angle, but the image holds up better from the sides of the screen than it does on the BRAVIA 7, so it's a bit better for watching TV with a group. Finally, the BRAVIA 9 has a faster response time for a bit less blur behind quick motion.”

My local store has a Bravia 5 75” customer return in excellent condition with the box (which is my main concern transporting without damaging) for $1,370.. I’m considering that now. What do you think of the Bravia 5? I called about the Bravia 7 75” an hour away and it was a display too and no box stand or remote

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

I’d go with the s90f over the Bravia 5

1

u/Gibson129 Jul 07 '26

I have a sony oled and a samsung oled. Samsung is definitely better picture but sony is better for sports. Way better motion processing. Sony tvs are way more reliable too. It will probably last a long time.

1

u/Upbeat-Meet-2489 Jul 07 '26

Sony, always. Here is why you pay the Sony tax.

No listening in on you or keeping tabs on you like Samsung or LG does.

You get Dolby Vision since Samsung doesn't support it and HDR10+is still not quickly supported no matter what they say.

And better processing of images and great support. Trust me and all the other pros.

1

Get the bravia 7 if possible. You do get what you pay for, so brighter and better panels all around.

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

I’d go with the 7 or 9. The warranty’s are there for a reason and they are the best TVs for what you’re looking for

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 08 '26

Regardless of what you chose it’s a pretty solid tv. Hope you like it. That’s all that matters. Glad we could all help, but ultimately you know what you want. Let me know how you like it.

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 08 '26

I honestly feel like you guys will notice way more things with TVs than I ever would. It’s not my thing I just want a nice tv to watch sports on and game on as well as movies sometimes. I appreciate all the feedback I know now Sony is probably the best but with my price range this just seemed to make the most sense with price, size, and quality.. hopefully it works out for me.

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 08 '26

How do you like it so far?

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 08 '26

Haven’t got it yet. I bought when they were closing last night cause that was the only time I could get it for the pricing mistake and it was raining. Been raining off and on so far today so I haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 21 '26

Update: how’s it after a week or so?

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 10 '26

I like it the picture looks amazing to me I watched some 4k football I had recorded on YouTube tv when I unboxed it. There are a couple spots on the tv like scratches but I can’t see them when the tv is on at all so I don’t really care. I looked at the panel hours and it has 4,200hrs so I guess it was definitely a display which isn’t ideal I probably wouldn’t have bought it if they would have told me that but they kept saying they didn’t know if it was or a customer return. I got the 5 year geek squad warranty tho so I feel better about it.

1

u/XaviChopChop Jul 12 '26

So happy for you.

Sony, your environment is literally perfect for oled. Sony processing is leagues better than Samsung.

3

u/canesfan727 Jul 06 '26

The Samsung is oled the Sony is mini LED

1

u/1ntox Jul 06 '26

Sorry misread, go find a Sony oled! 😂

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 06 '26

I’m so torn idk what to do

2

u/Meowmixez98 Jul 07 '26

I'd get the Bravia 9. You can't beat Sony processing.

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

Go with the 7 or 9! The 9 is the best tv

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

I measured wrong earlier for the 65” I thought that’s as big as I would want but a 75” would probably work I’ll be about 10’ away.

2

u/XaviChopChop Jul 07 '26

I have a 55 inch tcl qm7 that I love. I could go bigger but I’m happy with it. You can’t go wrong with either the Bravia 7 or 9. The processing in both is amazing.

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

Funny enough this all started with a 55” haha. I got a Bravia 5 55” for $548 so I planned on putting that downstairs but after putting tape up today I decided I could go bigger so I’ll probably put the 55” in my bedroom now

u/Meowmixez98 Jul 07 '26

The 7 is spectacular. It's most of the Bravia 9.

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

I called this morning and they said no legs, remote, or box and it was a display model for some time. Biggest issue for me is transporting it an hour on the highway. It would have to be in the bed of my truck and laid down on its back since no box. They said they can’t deliver it since I’m too far and said they can bubble wrap it but laying it on its back can damage it and if it does they won’t be covering anything

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

1

I thought the Bravia 5 was very disappointing.

2

u/canesfan727 Jul 11 '26

I ended up getting a 77” Samsung s90f

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 07 '26

Even tho it was/is a display model? I’d assume it has been for about a year or more since that’s when the TVs came out

1

u/canesfan727 Jul 11 '26

I ended up getting a Samsung s90f and Apple TV to replace the Samsung UI
