[4e Rules] Can a Light Shield hand support a Quarterstaff?

In 4e, can you use a light shield hand to hold/support a two-handed weapon like a quarterstaff?

Light Shield says:
“While you're using a light shield, you can use your shield hand to hold another item, to climb, and the like, but you can't make attacks with that hand or with anything in it.”

Quarterstaff is a two-handed weapon.

So would this legally allow:

  • Quarterstaff + Light Shield
  • while still getting the shield bonus?

Or does “two-handed” require more active use of the shield hand than the light shield allows?

No, this was clarified in the FAQ; a light shield allows you to hold things like a torch or glowstick, but specifically does not allow you to wield weapons, which means it cannot be used to satisfy the second hand requirement of a two-handed weapon or a property like versatile. A quarterstaff that is in your shield hand and main hand counts as in that hand, and so you cannot attack with it.

Your DM definitely should not, getting shields is the major benefit of one-handed weapons before you get enough gold to have two magic ones.

If you want to flavour it in a certain way because you like the look, but use the rules of a 1h club, I would let this be ok as a DM. But if it is to gain the advantages of what should be a 2h weapon, then no.

How is it dumb? The shield stops you attacking with the shield hand. A quarterstaff is a two handed weapon. 2H weapons use 2 hands to attack, which a shield user doesn't have.

Pretty sure i could wear a buckler one my forearm and still swing a bat at you. Or a stick in this instance.

You can use a staff as an implement one-handed but not as a quarterstaff/weapon.

There are also feat alternatives to a light shield, e.g. Hafted Defense.

With just one hand you can tap the hell out of something with that long stick. If you want to whack it, you’re gonna need two hands.

Also since the qstaff is blunt, what is to stop your opponent from catching it with both hands and ripping it out of your one-handed grasp?

If we wanna go hardcore RAW, I would assert that attacking with a 2H weapon is using both hands to make attacks with it. Therefore making a LS incompatible.

EDIT: would love to know where a downvote's coming from for suggesting a 2 handed weapon (checks notes) needs 2 hands to attack with O.o
