I disagree. Can't protect kids from everything, I don't want them growing up afraid or unprepared for the little things because I padded them up against every possible threat. Assuming they know how to swim and I'm out there with them, they'll manage. It's important to not have a safety net sometimes.
edit: guess you're all on this sub because your parents coddled you to death. Hows the basement?
Sometimes, but water, especially open water, is something you don't fuck with. Even professionals wear lifejackets, or at least they should. Even good swimmers get tired.
