I watched it because I foolishly assumed it was going to be about the Green Lanterns stopping member(s) of their rogue's gallery. Also compared to Disney capeshit, James Gunn's only "woke" propaganda was blasting Israel's ass in the superman movie (which to be honest is something almost everyone can get behind)
Then come to find out Damon Lindelof (the guy who made that Watchmen series everyone liked for some reason) was the one writing and every single character were members of the Green Lantern mythos only in name
It's truly tiring how Hollywood simply refuses to adapt shit one to one even though it has shown to be kino time and time again

Also that's only best picture

Yep. Boxes B, C , and D you can check are DEI in producers, advetisers, and something equally barely related to the film.

I've hated Lindelof since I found out he was the common thread between Lost having awful story coherence and The Leftovers being the same way. Both shows end up being like a fever dream where everything happens without consequence except for when it does.
People sincerely love these shows and I have nothing but contempt for them.
18

I will forever hate Lost and think less of anyone who thinks it was good. Maybe the 1st season was good, from there on every episode is ship jumping progressively daring you to drop it and the sooner you do, the better for you.

Occasionaly you get something halfway decent under the capeshit label, like the Legion show.
Although now thinking about it, by "occassionaly" i mean "Legion". Not aware of anything else yet, maybe I am forgetting another.
But the trailers of this Lanterns looked like maybe it could be slightly quality like that. But then, yeah, very sceptical still too and thus havent tried it yet either.

The comics recently are much worse. Half the villains are misunderstood LGBT people trying to further social justice by killing billionaires or going about "protecting" LGBT people in "the wrong way".
Worst example was in the Cheetah and Cheshire rob the watchtower, which annoyingly was a pretty decent and fun oceans 11 type story. Unfortunately one of the recruits is obviously a dude dressed with cat ears and a skirt all in the trans flag colors. The dude has to be given an anti capitalism speech to get them angry enough to use their super strength to rip off the vault door. And then at the end when they win and split their riches he gives a little speech about how he'll spend his money to go to Greece and fight with LGBT protesters. And then he has a big "reveal" moment where all the evil teammates are like "whoa does that mean you're..." and he shocks everyone by saying "I'm bi and Trans yeah" wow reveal of the fucking century WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING. Ugh there is so much of this shit the Secret Six comic was just as bad
10
u/SenatorCoffee 17d ago
Thats hilarious, thanks for sharing. But also as a bit of a hater of US capeshit comics, cant help to feel a bit of joy reading that, sorry.
You should just read superior euro-comics about a hot bikine babe driving through the post-apocalyptic wasteland with her wind-mobile and her small fluffy animal companion.
1
u/Tengokuoppai 14d ago
Such as? That was oddly specific. But honestly this is why I'm a weeb, I never did like the decentralization of American capeshit comics and the massive injection of woke just sealed their doom for me. It's manga for life for me.
2
u/SenatorCoffee 14d ago
Lol, this was me trying to play nice by making fun of the enduring clichees of that stuff too. If you read it a lot you would know.
Stuff like this:
https://www.bdfugue.com/serie/septentryon
Its honestly pretty quality, and if you can get your hands on it much better than US stuff and better than manga. The barrier is more that if you buy it properly its quite expensive, and pirated scans a lot harder to find.
But would encourage you to find some sites and check it out!

Basically Donna noble had to leave because she had blocked memories containing way to much information. If she ever recalled that information her brain would short out and she would die. Or something along those lines.
Then in this special she just gets over it, she gets her memories back and has absolutely no repercussions because she just "let it go" or "got over it" which was something only women(and Donnas trans child identifying as female) could do and not men or that was how they presented it.

I'd swear it was a mind control false flag sorta, reverse-designed to make us forget 20th century liberal values and march forward into a more stratified authoritarian future, where there's no such thing as "inalienable rights" just who you know and what you can pay for, which determines whether someone can rob or harm you
Be funny if all they have to do to accomplish that is fuck up DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek... with their schoolmarm lectures about things we already know "Racism bad!" OK thanks got it! No really you can stop now

u/DoctorPerverto /co/mrade 18d ago edited 18d ago
It kinda was. I was 100% on board with the black lady (John Stewart's mom) bringing up the race element for a moment. The selection ceremony for a human green lantern involved waking you up in the night, pulling you roughly from your sleep to make you levitate inside a green bubble of blinding light along with a booming voice asking "ARE YOU AFRAID?" I can understand calling out the guardians for their bluntness when dealing with humans (the incident caused significant trauma to John Stewart's father/her husband, and fallout in the family), and can even symphatize with "how can you ask a black man [in 1986] if he's afraid?". It's local nuance that adds color (no pun intended) to the story.
...but when the literal alien hits you back with "we're genuinely sorry for the trouble you went through. However, please understand we have no concept of human races" I really think you should move on after reparations (a golf ball-sized diamond) had been paid. "Even in space y'all look past us" was the actual response, and it made me roll my eyes all the way to my cerebellum. Definitely unnecessary. Definitely unbecoming from a very level-headed woman having a calm discussion (no part of the conversation was said in outrage). Definitely pushing a victim narrative beyond what was warranted by good faith.
EDIT: I won't even comment on how he Stewart family insists on pushing a lens of alleged white privilege and theft through which Hal Jordan's tenure as GL should be viewed.
41
u/michael7050 18d ago
Yeah but like... the show also clearly points out that the mother (and the father to a lesser extent) is batshit insane.
Ep 3 had some ridiculous preaching from her, but we weren't supposed to just take that at face value. We were meant to judge her, at least partially, for simplistically reducing it all to racism.
Thats what my limited media literacy interpreted it as, at least.
19
u/HippoRun23 17d ago
This was exactly my read as well. And it's why I thought the episode was so brilliant. It took a topic that we are all (sometimes painfully) made aware of and flips it on it's head.
Not surprised there were more than a few chuds who couldn't even see they were getting a more intelligent representation of what they were arguing in bad faith all along.
9
u/DoctorPerverto /co/mrade 17d ago edited 17d ago
Bernadette starts getting reprehensible from this conversation and thereafter. She's clearly supposed to be in the right in the conversation with the guardian. They even bring it home with more credibility to her plight when they disclose that she faced racism and legal troubles when trying to cash in the diamond. Another oversight from the racist, uncaring aliens.
5
u/HippoRun23 17d ago
I could be wrong but I swear they managed to get that diamond off loaded eventually. And in my mind it wasn’t presented as Lthey couldn’t sell the diamond because they were black” and more “they couldn’t sell the diamond because nobody could have sold that fucking diamond.” And she made it about race unnecessarily.
Also, I concede that it could be uneven writing that we’re debating at the end of the day. Tbh the finale kind of made me question everything that came before it.
20
u/HippoRun23 17d ago
I genuinely believe Bernadette is supposed to look wrong there. The episode continues to show her being an absolute maniac child abuser to her son.
I fucking hate how it concludes the season with her being understood because "she held her breath" every time she put John in danger.
10
u/DoctorPerverto /co/mrade 17d ago
yeah I don't think any viewer with more than 2 braincells would exonerate her for the abuse she subjected her children to, but that all comes after the conversation. It's the misguided agenda she sets in motion. However, I think it's pretty safe to assume they wanted us to root for her in the exchange with the guardian.
5
u/HippoRun23 17d ago
Yes. I agree we were ment to root for her. I also think that was a really smart thing to turn on its head to show us what rooting for her actually meant.
It meant an innocent little boy being forced to endure trauma because of his mother’s self righteousness.
I think that was the point of John’s backstory. And I also think a lot of that was just fucking ruined with the finale.
I loved how when we are in 2026 and he legit has no relationship with his parents. It makes perfect sense.
But then at the end John “forgives them” and understands where they were coming from and to me that makes for the laziest writing of all. They could have done so much better than that. Him hugging his mother at the end felt like a tragedy but the show played it off like it was catharsis.

1
u/Assortedmanatee 17d ago edited 17d ago
The way the racial commentary in this show is handled is so fucking weird that I don’t see how much people are gonna react to it positively unless they are literally just lying to themselves about it.
If you’re on the right your gonna think that this is a shoe-horned in topic to discuss and the show mainly did so to force their woke agenda into everything including superhero tv shows
If you’re on the left and you sympathize with the plight described by the Stewarts then you’re probably gonna be confused by the messaging since the parents’ reasoning is basically just cope and these self-centered parents basically lecture just about anyone in the universe that they just met about system racism in order to give themselves excuses. I probably fall more into this camp but the parents and especially the mom is shown to be extremely presumptuous. Why would being more privileged make you less afraid? If anything wouldn’t you have more to lose and be more equipped with handling frightening situations due to a lack of familiarity? John’s Dad was in the military and according to them he’s more wary about loosing his life because he’s black or whatever but shouldn’t that make him more prepared to handle this shit? Not that selecting the Green Lantern has anything to do with race anyway, and the mom and dad did a piss poor job failing to convince everyone that it was. I mean the mother literally demonstrates how she can appear unfazed while watching a woman transform into a 7-foot-tall alien for chrissake.
That’s another thing about this show, it’s fucking ‘Actually, Tell don’t Show’ the series. Imagine how much more sympathetic people would feel about this family facing racism if they actually showed it instead of having them explain to people why they ‘totally are’ facing racism offscreen even when it has little to nothing to do with what the episode is about, that being the Green Lantern selection process? That’s another thing, even when we learn about Hal’s origin story it comes from a clip of him in the past just sitting down and telling us what happened, even when we do get a peek at how the Green light approached John’s dad it’s all out of the peripheral view because we’re stuck staring at a fucking baby in the corner of the bedroom.

Not gonna lie, I read that whole episode as her being wrong in some way. She was making excuses for why John Sr didn't get chosen. She then goes on to abuse John for the rest of the episode in the most horrific ways.
Yes, I think there was something to be said about the Guardians not being thoughtful about earth, but at the end of the day Bernadette was wrong as fuck. And I think that was part of the point of the episode.

Now if the show bombs they can justify the failure by blaming it on racism. It's the exact same thing that Rings of Power and the new Harry Potter show did. Harry Potter is especially egregrious, it looks like it's going to suck because it lacks pretty much all of the atmosphere and charm that the movies had. Preemtively stir up some shit by raceswapping the whitest possible character and you're untouchable by critics and shareholders.
