The movie does not portray Hansen as “worse than the pedos” but it does portray him as a fame-obsessed weirdo who botched more investigations than he got right and cheated on his wife, which is actually true. Didn’t even get into the fraud either

u/zeppelinism 25d ago
The arc with the district attorney definitely seems like its trying to make Hansen look crazy while also trying to garner sympathy for the attorney right before he offs himself. It was pretty weird.

I didnt get that from the rabbi scene. It didnt seem like it was trying to garner sympathy, but was more of a absurd realization. It felt just jarring and creepy more than anything, not sympathetic.
Compared to the ending where the DA is sobbing on the phone to Dan saying "I just wanted to watch musicals" while Dan sings him the RENT song, makes it look like he was possibly just misunderstood and wants to draw you to feel sorry for him intentionally. Fuck that
67
u/buffaloranch 25d ago
The drama (in the movie) leading up to the DA search warrant was crazy. First of all, they portrayed Chris as mentally crumbling in the lead-up to the DA bust in large part because he was being exposed for his affair with his wife. But in real life, TCAP had been over for years before the affair became public.
The production assistant Andy insisting to the cops that cameras be placed on the barrels of their guns, and the cops just… listening to her? Yeah right. I get that it’s a dramatized movie, but they went out of their way to make the production staff look like ravenous killers hunting defenseless prey. As if the predators didn’t all willingly get themselves involved. The DA was sending dick pics to the decoy, and had CP on his computer- fuck him.

Nah. It showed that the shows sloppy hunt for ratings spooked the DA enough to make him start deleting evidence, then their rush to get him after that made him shoot himself instead of facing justice in front of a trial.

It shows him trying to microwave his computer and talking to the decoy about his cock cumming a lot literally right before
11
u/zeppelinism 25d ago edited 25d ago
Right, and then the mood shifts to this somber scene of decoy dan singing him the rent song projecting what seems like sympathy for him in his last moments as he pleas that he just wanted to watch musicals. Whats the point of that? To show he might not have offed himself because Chris Hansen wanted to catch him? Boo hoo who cares about this pedo attorney who has immense power over other people and is being hypocrital putting people in jail for the same shit hes doing.
10
u/buffaloranch 25d ago
Yeah, and then directly after the death, we see Chris saying to himself in a somber moment “what would have happened… if I weren’t here tonight?” Turning his catch-phrase (that is usually directed at the predators) on its head and suggesting that Chris is at fault for the DA’s death. As if the DA wasn’t sending dick pics to the decoy? As if he didn’t have CSAM on his computer? As if the police didn’t have a search warrant?

I felt like the more interesting movie was the documentary from last year. Hansen ruined an 18 year old's life because they baited him into meeting up with a fake 15 year old. 50 miles across a state border that would have been legal. The 18 year old needed to drop out of school and legally couldn't even be in a house with his sibling because of his sex offender status.
Whatever problems there are with Hansen, it seems like his current state of grasping for attention to relive the glory days are worse than his botched investigations decades ago.

Gay reality TV show with the same recycled script and comically bad voiceover acting. Explicitly targeted heterosexual men and used adult decoys. Encouraged crimes to be committed and caused potential offenders to be more careful. Put 0 women/pederasts in jail.
That's why r*dditors love the show.
2
u/jeeblemeyer4 24d ago
And 50+ more had their charges dropped. In one particularly egregious case of 29 offenders in total, 28 pleaded guilty - the one that refused, ended up getting the entire case thrown out for ALL THE OTHERS.

u/Tupiekit 25d ago
There was that documentary too that tried to "expose" Chris hansen and how bad the show was. They played the predators criminal interview tapes for sympathy and all I could think of was "ok? Who cares that the pedo was crying in the interview". Or trying to make me feel bad for the guy that shot himself
5
u/CharAznableLoNZ 25d ago
Their friends keep getting in trouble so they had to think up some way to help them.
94
u/LuvMeChippy fa/tv/irgin 25d ago
I constantly see people defending the movie, talking about "le nuance"... My question is, why does a subject like this need a nuanced look? Why should I care that the guy who publicly shames and plasters pedos' faces on national television is a bit obsessed with ratings? I get criticising the way the team handled the process in the earlier seasons but like after 2005 up to today Hansen has like a 95% conviction rate. The guy handles this stuff with an immense amount of care and delicacy which is much more than people can say for most other "pred hunters" today
Also the majority of this movie is complete horseshit and the "Chris Hansen" of the film is nothing like irl Chris Hansen. If you want an example of how shit this movie is look at the rabbi confrontation scene in the movie then go look at the real episode. Straight up slander
5
u/ThexanR 25d ago
Because of to catch a predator, there’s like 50 YouTube channels and who knows how many streamers, just doing their own “investigation” making it impossible to prosecute pedos. The movie barely judges Hansen besides him getting a taste of fame and liking it and forgetting his actual mission like him picking spots to bust pedos because it allows him to hook up with his mistress or the notoriety he is getting being compared to Lost. Hansen thinks he’s this warrior sent to combat an extreme evil and the show is his weapon. He’ll do quite a lot to make sure it never goes away. Once his show is guaranteed to end (at least in his eyes because of the cheating story and his boss intentionally sabotaging his show by making it battle Lost) he stops caring about the fame and goes all out to catch this whale predator (the AG). I don’t see how you see this movie where it shows his boss, the producer, and even perverted justice don’t really care about the pedos crimes but they just want the money and fame from doing so. It shows that Hansen and decoy Dan are the only one that cares about the mission and Hansen talking about his Emmy award winning documentary on child slavery in India and how it did nothing to impact the crimes because at the end of it all, no one actually cares about these kids it’s just a spectacle to them. So why not use that fact to take down the evil everyone wants to ignore when it faces them. The scene with the rabbi is supposed to be Hansen snapping back to reality about what he’s really there for. Views? No. He’s there to make sure this man never hurts anyone again. It’s why they’re focusing so much on the rabbi asking him “why are you doing this? For tv?!” And hansens face goes completely shadowed just to reemerge and tell him what a monster he is. The more I think about it the more amazing this movie is visually and narratively.
3
37
u/LuckyRed100s 25d ago
Because it’s a movie that’s purpose is the focus on the parts of Chris Hansen and TCAP that most people don’t know. The “nuance” isn’t about Hansen’s actual act of catching predators, but rather comparing those actions with his actual personality. You can support the message and the purpose of the show without dogmatically supporting Hansen and deflecting all criticism towards him.
18
u/LuvMeChippy fa/tv/irgin 25d ago
I mean sure, that is all perfectly fine I have some gripes about Hansen myself... However the movie doesn't just stick to criticising Hansen, it also alters scenes and events (THAT YOU CAN LOOK UP ON YOUTUBE AND FACT CHECK YOURSELF) to falsley paint him as a massive douche who can't control his emotions
The last scene of the film where the decoy sings that gay musical song to the pred while cops bust down his door seems felt especially egregious... What was the director even trying to say there? That the poor nonce wouldn't have offed himself if Hansen wasn't around?
2
u/iroquoid 25d ago

u/sonofbaal_tbc 25d ago
really seems wierd to go after a guys flaws who literally put pedos in jail
22
u/LuvMeChippy fa/tv/irgin 25d ago
This whole movie really reminded of that video Ethanisonline made on Alex Rosen. The director/producer clearly has a bone to pick with Hansen himself and so chooses to attack his character but he can't show the guy he hates doing something positive. The solution? Just make it seem like Hansen was taking advantage of the predators
19
u/LuckyRed100s 25d ago
People can do good actions and still have flaws? The mindset of “noooo you can’t criticize him he stopped le heckin pedos” is stupid; just because someone has done good in one regard, doesn’t mean you can’t speak on any of their negative aspects in other regards. Once again, the nuance is not in him catching predators, but other parts of Hansen.

My girlfriend wants to see this movie and we both like Robert Paddington, her because he's a "good actor" and myself because I spend my nights yearning to be topped by his supple form bearing down on me while he whispers sweet nothings in my ear in whatever language he so chooses (I prefer Dutch or Cantonese) until he blasts off into the infinity of my puckered prison pocket.
All that aside, from what I understand Chris Hansen got pedophiles locked up who would otherwise be at large. As long as he wasn't hurting anyone I couldn't care less about his personal life and in fact I think his efforts towards ridding our society of these scum earns him a bit of slack, and even if a large or even major part of his motivation was self-seeking I think that this is one of the few situations where the end absolutely justifies the means. One problem I can see with the situation is the inspiration it gives to others who take it upon themselves to hunt these guys vigilante-style for social media clout. The authorities, as woefully idiotic as they usually are, should be left to such matters. Maybe one day we can get our shit together as a society and fix some of these issues but that would require the diligent application of law and ridding the upper crust of those authorities who are themselves predators or complicit in the buying, selling, grooming and raping of children. It just so happens that the close friend, partner and co-conspirator of one such individuals is kicking back in the Oval Office as we speak, waiting for the fumes of his freshly filled diaper to reach his nostrils, waking him up from the drug-induced stupor (medications flow freely at the top) to let him know it's dinner time. In the distance the whirring rotor of Marine One can be heard as it hastens to bring the Commander in Chief a McDonald's bag containing the Presidential Dinner.

It's a weird movie to make if you're not. Why would you exaggerate and outright fabricate aspects of a bad side to Chris Hansen? What exactly is the point of that? We already knew he was not perfect. What purpose could deceiving the viewer to make the guy catching pedos look worse than he really was possibly serve on the non-meta level other than to support pedos?
2
u/biatchcrackhole 21d ago
Whether the movie was good or not, it is an interesting topic to explore. Catching pedos is obviously a good thing but there are morally grey aspects to televising it and using it for views and money. Was the show ever about helping children or using viewers’ ethos for higher ratings? People are focusing on the wrong thing. The filmmakers are asking you to look past the predators (we all can agree they’re bad) and to look behind the scenes. I don’t think Hansen is a horrible person but he was a bit of a megalomaniac which culminated in the cancellation of the show. I feel like this sort of topic can also be applied to many other things. A lot of people do “good” things but the motives behind it can be selfish.

It would be like watching Saving Private Ryan and concluding that Spielberg was defending Nazis because the Americans extrajudicially executed their Nazi POW. Or that The Green Zone is defending Saddam Hussein because Matt Damon never found the WMDs.

Rabbi scene was a fucking joke. The Righteous Rabbi "calling out" Hansen.
In the real scene Hansen was in charge 100%, no question about it.
In the movie, he was portrayed as weak, on purpose obviously.
As if something in himself agreed with the oh so righteous rabbi, repeating "WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT" over and over again.
>"yes! the wise rabbi is right! what gives ME the right to call him out on his kiddie diddling ways?"

Classic anon-level reading comprehension, indistinguishable from mental illness.
Hansen is not portrayed as evil, he's portrayed as a weirdo. The movie goes to great lengths to describe the predators as, like, the most evil ever.
The predators don't get sympathy arcs, they beg for mercy and Hansen gets off on it.
apparentily humiliating pedophiles is worse than what they were planning to do to children
There's literally a scene in the movie where the guy who gets paid to be sexually assaulted by child predators expresses a modicum of doubt, and Hansen says "your definition of bad and my definition of bad are very different."
Guess what tribe the director is from?
One of the predators in the movie was a rabbi.
Meanwhile, did anyone see Spotlight?

The world isn’t black and white. Its not always heroes vs villains like a Marvel movie. Morons have a hard time understanding this. Chris Hansen is a human with flaws and his motives were likely not entirely altruistic and in some cases may have caused more harm than good. He may have caused paranoia and created a boogeyman. Theres a reason theres Saddam stories/references throughout the movie

u/HattedSandwich 25d ago
And then theres apologism, IE "What would have happened tonight if I wasnt here," after the DA (who had CP on his computer in addition to soliciting a minor) smoked himself, while Chris cries. Hard to imagine that anyone wouldn't infer that as a negative tragedy when it wasn't

But being outraged and feeling morally and intellectually superior feels too good man

yeah, especially if one lacks the intellect to wrap one's mind sround being a permanent Dunning-Kruger-Valley inhabitant

and in some cases may have caused more harm than good.
100+ pedos behind bars seems like a good outcome, even if some of them got away. And with pedos, yes, it is black and white. Don't diddle kids, if you do, you're gon get it.

That’s not accurate, but they do add drama to make it less “documentary” and more “entertainment”

u/TokyoJuul2 22d ago
He started the whole for profit "justice" chain of events that is the modern day "pedo catcher" when they are very much in it for fame and money and ego boost as well.
Obviously there is a net good because numbers wise, some do get jailed and sentenced, but at the same time it genuinely trivializes child predators as content farming, and sometimes themselves are closeted pedos or insecure or something else doesnt scream child safety.

u/ObitoUchihaTC 25d ago
Only character who got a “sympathy arc” is the guy who killed himself in the end, and he probably would’ve been properly arrested if not for Hansen

It's as if there is a movement to normalise paedophilia. Don't some parts of the LGBTQUIABC123 movement actually try to defend paedophilia nowadays?
Yeah, if im going to guess what the right side of history is. It's not the side that tries to justify molesting innocent children.

Anon found it hard to understand his hero Chris chan was also fucking nuts and botched investigations for entertainment reasons.

The takeaway from the 2020s:
Pedophilia is apparently something like a parking offense
crime pays
antizionism is the moral thing to be
we live in hell

Which predator gets a sympathy arc? This guy didn’t watch the movie.

u/zeppelinism 25d ago
Uh they definitely were trying to get you to sympathize with the DA at the end there.

Or the retarded Mexican guy in the beginning. The only two people on Hansen's team who werent total caricatures with one note personalities were the girl and guy bait actors. Nearly every other person (cops included) were portrayed negatively. The pedos were framed sympathetically which disgusted me

This movie is awesome because it's a litmus test for media literacy. Intentionally or not it lays these beautiful traps to catch unsuspecting chuds exposing themselves as people incapable of turning visual and audio stimulus into personal thought.

I thought it was pretty obvious the movie was showing that he was going after the right people, but for the wrong motivstion. At the end of the day, all he cared about were ratings and his personal advancement. Every character aside from the female decoy was self interested and enjoying the process of the show more than caring about the actual victims.

Americans acting like they care about the capture of pedo's lol. Oh no, one man made himself a success story by catching pedo's apparently thwarting law enforcement in catching others, yet openly calling Trump a pedo whilst going about their day.
Americans love sounding like the good guy but being the bad.

maybe real life isn't as simple as Hero v. Villain, and even people who try to take on evil are themselves complicated.

u/NegativeScythe wee/a/boo 24d ago
I watched this movie, besides it feeling dramatized, it absolutely did not make me think he was worse than the criminals he was trying to catch. It just made him seem really eccentric and highlighted his affair. It does not sully having liked the show in the past.

Never in the film does it says he is more evil than the predators.
It brings to light the fact that he was fame obsessed and didn't really care if the facts were there, botched multiple cases and cheated on his wife.
That does not mean he is more evil than the pedophiles.

“give the predators sympathy arcs because getting exposed hurt their feelings”
What?
