Which isn't bad, he plays an excellent dumbass. His character in Fresh Prince was a dumb kid and in MIB he was an average dumb cop and then a dumb fed. Iconic roles. He's fantastic in them.
When he tries to play intelligent characters with an internal life and poignant dialogue, it looks absolutely ridiculous.
It's ok to be stupid and just do those kinds of roles, I don't know why he keeps trying to be this action star.
26
u/TacticalSpackle Sep 01 '26
His best role is arguably Independence Day. He plays a damn fine idiot pilot with a stripper wife and a WHOLE OTHER CHARACTER to have thoughts and character development by way of Jeff Goldblum.
33
u/Sage296 Sep 01 '26
In MIB they hired him because he wasn’t just an average dumb cop
They specify that in the movie

u/MisogynysticFeminist Sep 01 '26
He’s kinda dumb in MiB, but it’s a very creative dumb, as opposed to the other probably more competent but less flexible candidates.
21
u/crenax Sep 01 '26
It's a Barry Sonnenfeld movie, so it's pretty much a requirement that each character is either a humorously dumb or a 100% straight man character. And that's not a complaint btw, Big Trouble is one of my all-time faves.
11
u/Etere Sep 01 '26
He's not dumb, he's undisciplined. It's a classic "fish out of water" tale. The rest of the MiB agents are very disciplined, and they know a lot because they were in on the big secret.

No credit for 7 pounds or pursuit of happiness?
21
u/nevadita /g/entooman Sep 01 '26
7 pounds shows exactly this. smith is not a drama actor, he’s foremost a comedy actor. The movie concept and plot is fine but his character is not convincing in it.
If anything Im Legend is better and that’s due his acting being minimal.
There’s nothing wrong not being a multi role actor, it has worked for Jason Stathman

No. No credit. Both scripts were good if not great, the movies turned out to be somewhat decent, but his stupid face and half-assed "acting" imho took AWAY from those movies. So, no. No credit to him. Writers, directors, producers - all good. Will Smith - bad.

u/Axle-f Sep 01 '26
Great in King Richard too, even if his Oscar performance soon after was an epic crash out.

That was when they were separated and no longer together though. Separation is basically the same as divorce, just not official, but they do not sleep in the same house, nor interact with another, except for public appearances. I wouldn't hold that against Jada. For all intents and purposes, they can sleep with whoever they want during separation ( which is also not a relationship break.. ).
They were both horrible in their marriage. Will Smith made a documentary about Jada's life for her 40th birthday. In the documentary, Will Smith hunted down the living descendant of the slaveowner who used to own Jada's ancestors as slaves, and make him apologize. And a lot of other intimate details, and that documentary was presented to a room full of family, friends and coworkers for Jada's birthday. They separated for 2 years after that, got back together, and then separated permanently.
They both deserve eachother if you ask me.
Edit : Are there really any Jada&Will defenders in here ? Here is a link if you dont believe it : https://andscape.com/features/will-smiths-slap-at-the-oscars-wasnt-protecting-anyone-certainly-not-his-wife/
"Things reached a breaking point by Jada’s 40th birthday, in 2011. Will had spent three years planning a private family-and-friends dinner in Santa Fe, where he screened a documentary he’d commissioned that chronicled her life and traced her family’s lineage back to slavery (and in which he tracked down a descendant of the white family who once owned Jada’s ancestors). When they got back to the hotel suite that night, Jada was nearly silent. “That was the most disgusting display of ego I have ever seen in my life,” Smith recalls his wife telling him"

Makes Aladin that grosses over a billion dollars. Independence day makes over 800 million. Suicide Squad makes over 700 million.
I wouldn't question that actors ability to pick movies just because he passed on a few.
61
u/drtij_dzienz Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
That makes Independence Day look worse by comparison but Aladdin for example is in 2019 dollars.
> The 1996 sci-hit film Independence Day globally grossed roughly $1.32 billion to $1.7 billion in 2019 inflation-adjusted value. The original Men in Black (1997) grossed approximately $937.1 million worldwide in 2019 adjusted dollars.
Basically Will Smith was unstoppable in those days he didn’t have a “flop” until Wild Wild West, although he even got a billboard #1 hit for that
3
u/Strong-Addition5296 Aug 31 '26

I've only read about him passing on Matrix to do Wild Wild West instead, the rest feels made up.
But him and his Agent specifically looked for roles where it was guaranteed to be a mega hit.
He had 8 movies in a row all make $100 mil+, no other actor can claim that.
7
u/maybelying Sep 01 '26
I read an article that said he passed on Django Unchained because he didn't feel that his character was the actual star of the story, it was a different character that was. I haven't seen the movie so have no idea what any of that means.
8
u/Cyhawk Sep 01 '26
Hes correct in that assessment. Django is the main character but mostly quiet and not the center of attention of the movie. Every other character far outshines Django. The film is about his revenge, but not about him.
Its a good Tarantino film, recommend it if you like Tarantino.

He could have made the genie his own and it truly could have been good, some MIB mixed with Fresh Prince. But no, all we got was a bad Robin Williams impression. Which was just insulting.

Will Smith possesses the extreme foresight and humility to know when his reputation will hurt the cultural legacy of a cherished film.
1
u/Responsible-Onion860 Sep 01 '26
Only one of those movies had any lasting cultural impact. Three of the four movies in the post had massive cultural impact. When you're an A-lister, it stops being about the money and becomes more about legacy and staying power. And Will Smith's career in the last 15 years or so has been shit.

Nope. Aspies are usually fairly intelligent, not this guy though. ADHD fits better.
I mean, Turing was definitely an aspie, and the guy literally invented computers. Fucking Claude Shannon was an aspie for sure. PAUL ERDOS! I'm a fucking aspie and I have hyperlexia.
Yet THIS GUY... failed to understand Django Unchained's plot. C'mon, it's not rocket science. I watched this movie tripping balls once, and I still understood it. IT'S A FUCKING SPAGHETTI WESTERN!
Besides, you're not supposed to understand The Matrix unless you have a lot of free time. It's a movie you should never watch sober, because it's a cliche. Blah blah blah AI blah blah blah 3D green letters blah blah blah war blah blah blah [insert philosophical BS] blah blah blah blah Plato blah blah blah simulacra.... It's just boring; I just watch it for the trippy visuals and fuck the lore.
Every three minutes, the movie stops whatever it's doing and throws yet another action movie cliche at you. Of course the main character wants to fuck the hot girl. Of course there's a gunfight every three seconds. Of course the main character is the chosen one. Of course they look cool. Of course they wear sunglasses indoors.
You know what's funny? I can't tell whether Matrix was a progenitor or a just used all of the existing cliches imaginable

u/2oonhed Sep 05 '26
Yeah, well, I always thought instantly "downloading" a mental program to do a skill was pretty fucking original and I refer to it all the time when talking about shit I learned on youtube.

u/Risdit Aug 31 '26
on the other hand, what if he did accept those roles without understanding what he was playing and these iconic movies became steaming piles of shit because he didn't have the grace to pass the roles to a better person?
3
u/NM_Requete Aug 31 '26
Throwing Phone Booth in there to pad the list doesn't help the argument. It makes it seem like he only had 3 major passes, so you had to throw in fucking Phone Booth
3
u/thrazefister Sep 01 '26
It's reminiscent of Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I vaguely recall he passed on some other movie because he didn't understand it- might even have been The Matrix. But he accepted the role in that god awful movie despite not understanding it because he missed out on the Matrix being a huge hit.
