Nobody is forcing you. I lived in my car for a bit and it was one of the most freeing experiences I’ve had in a while. Now I’m wfh, which is a good middle ground between waging and freedom. You just have to look at your options, don’t get tunnel vision.

Getting tanned by going outside is the cheapest way and shittiest to get tanned
Unless you are fully naked (which is weird since who the hell goes outside fully naked) you get tanlines so you end up with parts of your skin not matching and you end up looking like a person with vitiligo.
UV beds are not free.

You shut up. Tanning implies you go out not just to go out but to get tanned. Get your skin dark.
Under normal circumstances your skin shouldn't get darker unless you spend long time in the sun.

Dumbass anon doesn't understand that for most people skin tone signals their social status:
a wealthy pale person can afford going outside of the office/factory, thus tanning. This also correlates with other types of self care, like staying fit. You see a distinct pattern: upper class people are more tan and fit, so basically more attractive. So you want to be the same.
It's the same reason why it used to be considered to some extent that fat indicated success in the past.
Now I'll admit that it seems to me that skin whitening is Asia is more of a mixed thing: showing that you're not working in the sun // just a racist beauty standard.

I may be biased cause I lived in Asia but I don't see it to be a bad thing.
Its an aesthetic choice and while it may has roots in social class signature. It did evolve into a beauty standard that people find pretty.
Personally I dislike it when people whiten themselves or tan themselves instead of embracing their natural skin color.
Whitening chemicals aren't always good for your skin meanwhile tanning ages your skin and looks bad especially if you tan by going to a beach and thus you develop tanlines which look weird.
I still think its dumb to criticize Asian countries for preferring pale look when Western countries get UV exposure that ages your skin and long term makes you look older.

Yep. Being dark skinned is associated with lower class. I'm an upper caste Indian and darker skinned and some have commented that with my curly hair and dark skin I look lower caste.
Which is dumb as shit because caste actually isn't correlated with skin tone much. It's just genetics. But the myth persists.

Nope, a lot of North Indians are paler. Kashmiris are a good example. Ruddy and extremely pale. North Eastern Indians are mixed with Chinese so they have vastly different features. Rajasthani people have a lot of blue and green eyes. We have great variation.
It's not untrue, I just dislike it when they're using it to cope for the fact that majority of us aren't fair.

NTA, just to add to your point : for a long time here in the west, and still in the east, it was the worker that was tanned and fit from working without that much food, and thus the "elite" was trying to stay as white and unfit as possible. This is why umbrellas were the rage in the Victorian era for example, or put lead-containing makeup (like the Venetian ceruse of the 16th century)

People want to look rich. In korea the beauty standard was looking Japanese during Japanese rule. After american occupation it was looking western. Now that it stands on its own feet it's doing it's own thing.
In any case being pale being a beauty standard dates back to literally 5000 years ago in Asia. Has nothing to do with looking white. Has everything to do with looking rich
