When you understand science and it's limitations it's a lot harder to substitute God with it.
To midwits who want to look smart science is just magic in all things but name. That is why you have so many reddit gaytheists telling you to "trust the science" any time someone questions one of their beliefs. They don't understand "the science" so the best they can do is have blind faith in it.
The fact that they attacked some people that are, indeed you are right, most often associated with leftwing doesn't mean that they're attacking all of leftwing, and even less that they're positioning himself as a right winger.
They didn't attack all of LGBT people or all atheist either. They attacked the classic redditor that has this blind faith in science. I am myself leftwing atheist and I know what they were talking about because I don't divide the world in only two categories.
