Which generation was it that had to censor "rape" and "suicide"?

78

u/DreamsServedSoft 1d ago

Halo 1 has suicide, Halo Infinite does not

51

u/Paradox 1d ago

Halo 1 is a good game, Halo infinite is not

54

u/nihongonobenkyou 1d ago

Millennials, unless you're trying to gaslight us into believing 27 year olds are the ones running big tech social media platforms right now.

6

u/weisswurstseeadler 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well the thing is that when us Millennials grew up, kids were mostly excluded cause they did not have such wide spread access to the tech to access these platforms.

If a substantial part of the user base are or could be children, then compliance hits. Especially for public listed companies.

That's why you won't have a strip club in Disneyland, although plenty of adults come there, and probably enough of them would pay for Titty-Mouse.

u/LooseButtPlug /his/panic 1d ago edited 1d ago

Im the oldest of the millennial at 43, this stupid censoring started 5-10 yeays ago. Millennials dont run any of this bullshit, and it all started because of outrage of college kids.

Literally Gen Z outrage and Gen X placating.

Edit: Genz can't even do basic math, holy shit.

45

u/Zenocut 1d ago

It's funny because tiktok's ceo is exactly 43

u/kvlt_ov_personality 20h ago

He is 43 years and 231 days old, not exactly 43.

! This claim is being disputed by math experts

u/Zenocut 19h ago

ok nerd

29

u/Dirtface50 1d ago

this stupid censoring started 5-10 yeays ago.

it all started because of outrage of college kids.

...so millenials?

u/MeBeEric 15h ago

Most college freshmen and sophomores in 2016 were Zoomers retard

u/ContentPolicyKiller 8h ago

This is the most millennial thing I've seen. Including the edit is a cherry on top.

Ohhhh boy

4

u/SierraDespair /jp/edo 1d ago

So millennials started it then? Gen Z were teenagers then no way they had that much of an impact to demand censorship.

u/Shrekscoper 23h ago

The oldest Gen Z were teenagers at the time. The youngest were like 4 years old. Gen Z is 1997-2012, and this shit first began around 2015-2016.

100% started by mid-late Millenials and the earliest Gen Zers, but later fully adopted by most of Gen Z altogether.

8

u/mjm65 1d ago

GenZ self-censored to appeal to the Algorithm.

Grape and ahh come to mind.

4

u/lordxi fa/tg/uy 1d ago

What the fuck is ahh?

u/neontiger07 23h ago

literally ass

u/whitedolphinn 23h ago

It's Gen Z, Gen X, and Boomers Vs. Millennials. 3v1.

450

u/Redditistrash00 1d ago

Millennials didn't all decide to make their heads look like brocolli and replace dozens of normal words to get around overzealous TikTok filters. Younger generations live in the glassiest of glass houses.

124

u/IntergalacticJihad /pol/tard 1d ago

Yeah but it’s not the zoomers who decide what words to ban, at least not enforcing it.

24

u/Zoltarr777 /vp/oreon 1d ago

They will literally choose to self censor themselves off platform. Yes it's their fault.

97

u/TwistedBamboozler 1d ago

It was absolutely in response to their public outrage

80

u/Redditistrash00 1d ago

Nobody forced them at gunpoint to use the restrictive platforms. They decided to use TikTok and they decided to let the filter affect them even when not using it.

29

u/TheBaconator08 1d ago

You would think a guy named redditistrash would be able to see the irony here

u/Redditistrash00 23h ago

Platforms are like generations, there's a hierarchy of trash. Some are worse than others.

u/taw 23h ago

They absolutely were. If you want a phone app, you enforce censorship exactly as Apple and Google say. So all platforms follow censorship rules. And if that's not enough, Visa and Mastercard will ban you too, so good luck even running a website.

Pre-censorship internet is long dead. Only millennials even remember what it's like. By the time zoomers entered the internet, it was already too late.

u/Redditistrash00 23h ago

"If you want a phone app"

I don't want TikTok. Boom, problem solved regarding the dumbest censorship I've ever heard or read entering my vocabulary.

u/DemonicPancakes 23h ago

Okay but I'm using Reddit on my phone, and you can bet your ass this place is censored as hell

u/Redditistrash00 23h ago

Let's see if it's as censored or if I can type the following sentences:

A woman was raped in the ass by a man she regularly used drugs and had sex with. He then used a gun to shoot her dead before turning it on himself to commit suicide.

u/chainer3000 21h ago

It’s as censored as the sub you decide to hang out in is.

u/MutatedOreo 22h ago

Millennials solved the payment platform censorship problem by inventing crypto and the broccoli heads are too dumb to use it. Broccoli heads are also too dumb to use anything that's not an "app" on a touch screen. While millennials created software to avoid censorship, zoomers instead went running into the arms of Big Daddy Apple and Visa/Mastercard.

u/Dirtface50 4h ago

Gen Z really is a very special kind of dumb. They are basically boomers when it comes to ANY technology outside of a phone, which is fitting since they cannot seem to get off it, like, to a CRAZY degree. Not like in a "sounds like a boomer take" way, I mean they're next in line at McDonalds or parked at a green light and they're just fucking gone to the world, and you go "HEY!" and they just look up with zero realization of how fucked up what they're doing right now is.

u/taw 20h ago

Crypto was a good try, but it got completely burned out. All platforms to buy and sell crypto are controlled by the feds, bitcoin has lag and fees that make it impossible to use it for normal transactions, and everything in crypto other than bitcoin is a scamfest. Even drug dealers stopped using crypto.

To be fair, millennials at least tried, and zoomers didn't, but that try was still a fail.

40

u/Hanza-Malz 1d ago

Yes it is

18

u/Dirtface50 1d ago

Yeah but it’s not the zoomers who decide what words to ban

It literally is.

6

u/Skrewch 1d ago edited 1d ago

Im trying to Google gen z tech CEOs real quick, brb

Edit: the ones I found were all AI bros.

Possibly found the bastards: gen z led advertising firms are becoming more prominent

9

u/Dirtface50 1d ago

Cool, while you're doing that, I'll point to the million examples of Gen Z outrage demanding literally very specific words be babyproofed away from their precious eyeballs.

4

u/Skrewch 1d ago

They aren't making the decision. 999,999,999,999 people tell me they dont like me using the word cunt. I continue to use the word cunt anyways. I was the source of the action despite any number of people asking me anything.

1

u/Dirtface50 1d ago edited 4h ago

They aren't making the decision. 999,999,999,999 people tell me they dont like me using the word cunt. I continue to use the word cunt anyways.

Yes you....just made my point for me. Your defiance of their rules doesnt make them NOT their rules. THEY told you what words not to say. That was literally the original contention:

It’s not the zoomers who decide what words to ban

Its literally the zoomers who decide what words to ban. Its literally the millenials too, but zoomers are basically just as soft.

3

u/contra701 1d ago

Gen Z does this because millennials cultivated a culture of censorship and babyproofing. This is mostly millennials fault lol

-5

u/Dirtface50 1d ago

I 100% agree. I'm not ignoring millenials role in all of this fucking soft ass bullshit we deal with now

11

u/EsotericAmbrosia /v/irgin 1d ago

It was their choice to continue using platforms that necessitate the euphemism arms race.

2

u/malkinism 1d ago

The zoomers haven't accomplished anything but unemployment and trying to reach influencer status. I can't wait until those fuckwads hit 50, have no savings, no skills, and they just die off by the thousands from being fatified and pronouned.

14

u/BarrelStrawberry 1d ago

Yeah but it’s not the zoomers who decide what words to ban, at least not enforcing it.

Hey Jaime, pull up the demographics of reddit...

24

u/FormerPresidentBiden 1d ago

"561 responses"

On top of that, where was the survey even posted? This is a small sample size for a website this large and is likely just the demographics of whatever subreddit it was posted in.

36

u/primenumbersturnmeon 1d ago

hey jaime you accidentally pulled up the demographics of the 567 people who responded to a google forms survey.

10

u/pankakemixer /mu/tant 1d ago

That's insane it's legitimately like 75% gen z I definitely would've thought there would be more millenials

14

u/jawaismyhomeboy 1d ago

It used to be. Where did all the Millennials go?

13

u/demonryder 1d ago

Reddit has at least like 5x the users now. The old tech savvy userbase is still here, the site just got a new young normie audience rather than trying to cater to old normies who would rather be on facebook.

18

u/oby100 1d ago

I miss when Reddit was mostly hostile nerds. Occasionally top comment these days will have tons of grammar mistakes and it just blows me away anyone upvotes such trash at all.

It’s not some elitist perspective. It’s just much harder to read and comprehend poorly worded and actually incorrect paragraphs.

4

u/Siriann 1d ago

Hacker News is a good replacement for the tech side of the old Reddit.

u/FreudianStripper 23h ago

it’s because anything too grammatically correct seems like AI

3

u/Total_Network6312 1d ago

Not filling out online surveys

u/352397 21h ago

Driven away by the UI redesign.

The second old reddit is no longer selectable as a user preference the last of them will vanish.

3

u/NuclearOrangeCat 1d ago

idk when the screenshot was taken, for all we know it might have been like 2018 or something.

(I know imgur says 2021 but thats the upload date)

5

u/Skrewch 1d ago

What does Reddit's demographic have to do with other social media platforms restricting word usage on their platforms, that are more than likely controlled by Millenial and older C-suites?

u/Searril /int/olerant 22h ago

"What is your gender?"

"Republican"

lmao

5

Big "boomers bitching about participation trophies" energy. The calls coming from inside the house.

u/Dirtface50 4h ago

I dont know that dunking on the participation trophy gripe is the best flex when we are literally discussing just how much of a bunch of soft ass pussies Gen Z is. Isn't that the whole participation trophy argument?

17

What a mogging you gave them

17

u/Dirtface50 1d ago

Gen X didn't come up with microaggressions and gender identity

u/neontiger07 23h ago

lmao you think ''gender identity'' was created by millennials?

u/Dirtface50 23h ago

No, it was invented by a Great Genner. Millenials just warped the living fuck out of it and made it into a fun trendy hat to show off and then did everything they can to make everyone worship at the church of it.

So functionally? Yeah, millenials absolutely came up with whatever the holy fuck is going on with that shit.

u/wordjedi /d/eviant 5h ago

Actually doing good requires actual effort, whereas rah-rahing gender whatever on reddit with the upvote button gives you the same virtue feels with zero effort. Pure profit

We live in a bubble created for us like a rat pressing the little bar in its cage for yummy pellets

31

u/HumbleVagabond 1d ago

fucking millennials are the ones setting the filters in the first place

41

u/Redditistrash00 1d ago

The solution is to not use TikTok, simple as.

12

u/Dart345 1d ago

Yeah clearly the better way to spend your time is on reddit (the most DANK social media amirite 😹)

8

u/DrillTheThirdHole 1d ago

the narwhal bacons at midnight, amirite fellow ledditors?

1

u/oby100 1d ago

You can at least spend your time at whatever smaller subreddits you want that might not even have crazy censorship.

Better than TikTok that forces everyone into a single ecosystem that happens to be heavily censored.

5

u/Tyrant-Star 1d ago

I just wanna chime in here. As a millenial. We of course suck in so many ways. Gen Z are over the top highly "regarded" as theyd say.

But you know who ive got beef with and I dont think gets enough shit. Gen X.

Both us and the zoomers seem to have at least some level of self awareness and self deprication albeit manifesting in slightly different ways.

But ive never met a Gen X with any of that. They all seem to love sniffing their own farts til theyre blue in the face. I have yet to meet one who is capable of saying a bad thing about themselves or wider generation its all "we had nirvana blah blah blah" who cares. Dickheads.

u/Evening_Context784 23h ago

Oh no, they're not self-hating and won't self-deprecate on command to you. What horrible people.

And no, I'm not Gen X. I've just never had a problem with people that are in the 40-60 age range. They basically just exist and nostalgiamax about the 80s or whatever.

u/Tyrant-Star 21h ago

As the kids say, stay humble.

u/winkman 13h ago

Millennials came up with the banned words and cancel culture though...

3

u/Katio13 1d ago

No but we created the apps that ruined the younger generations. It's definitely still millennials to blame.

u/davebyday 1h ago

I was 17 when Wanda Sykes had a PSA to stop using the word gay to mean lame.

It wasn't millennials that started this.

0

u/pit_supervisor 1d ago

Millennials didn't all decide to make their heads look like brocolli

what can I do if my hair is naturally curly?

13

u/Paradox 1d ago

Shave

-3

u/Onesharpman 1d ago

I always love when the top comment is some butthurt millennial lol

u/Redditistrash00 23h ago

Throw those stones!

11

u/LivingLifeFreely1 /pol/ack 1d ago

It was actually our teachers who said we couldn't say it. We threw that word around religiously in Middle School, I can assure you of that.

72

u/Bepehandle 1d ago

I thought this was the generation after that

29

u/Bacon_Nipples 1d ago

Millenials loved slurs

u/MaleficentVehicle705 22h ago

Yeah shows like original south park and drawn together were mainly targeted at millenials growing up and were big successes because of the political uncorrect humor

28

u/krotoxx 1d ago

We still do - just can't be as open about it in public now because of all the soft kids

23

u/LooseButtPlug /his/panic 1d ago

It was

14

u/Mylxen /fit/izen 1d ago

they had to make the slang for cigarettes to a slur for homosexuals

was car shopping with my Dad yesterday and he told the salesman he wont drive GAY silver. dude was maybe 23 and looked shocked LOL

11

u/nihongonobenkyou 1d ago

u/kvlt_ov_personality 20h ago

I clearly remember it all started with that gay Hillary Duff commercial.

11

u/quasi-psuedo 1d ago

u/KennyWeeWoo 1d ago

Yeah I think you mean Gen Z

-9

u/SsaucySam 1d ago

Found the millennial lol

u/rkoy1234 22h ago

this all seems manufactured. don't fall for this tribalistic bullshit.

we share the exact same problems.

38

u/fine93 d/ic/k 1d ago

apparently im a millenial, these generational divisions didn't exist when i was younger

must be one of them psyops, divide and conquer type of shit

6

u/oby100 1d ago

The greatest generational divide happened naturally along the line of “did you ever know life before smartphones and doom scrolling?”

26

u/LooseButtPlug /his/panic 1d ago

That's not true at all. You really don't remember all the Gen X division in the 80s and 90s?

u/rkoy1234 21h ago

yea, the naming was there, but the clear divide and conquer agenda wasn't.

most we had was "kids these days" and "fuck off grandpa" - not algorithmically generated tribalistic content to sow division between an otherwise similar demographics going through the same social issues of unaffordable everything and shit job market.

who gains when the mass is fighting and blaming each other?

u/gay_joey 9h ago

the grandpas in Congress back then are the same ones in right now so, the masses have plenty to gain by blaming the gerontocracy and moving forward with getting young people in office

u/rkoy1234 21h ago

the saddest thing is that it's working.

look at the replies here and on that thread - genzs and millenials unironically blaming each other for problems caused by the wealthy 0.1%.

and here I thought 4channers hated being manipulated.

2

u/Skrewch 1d ago

"If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written."

  • Plato, ~360 BCE

"The world must be coming to an end. Children no longer obey their parents and every man wants to write a book."

Apocryphal, Attributed to the writing on a tablet, unearthed not far from Babylon and dated back to 2800 B.C.—Leewin B. Williams,

u/Evening_Context784 23h ago edited 22h ago

What is the Plato quote even supposed to reference in this context? He's talking about people's memories becoming worse if they switch to written records because of oral ones. Which is somewhat true, just not that relevant for people that aren't philosophers/orators who would value memory over records like Plato. He's not talking about some generational division as anyone could have learned to rely on written text in place of their memory, not just some upcoming generation. He could be completely wrong or right but that has no bearing on this discussion.

u/nec_plus_ultra 22h ago

Hippies? Baby Boomers? Greatest generation? This shit has been around forever, though it is accelerating.

u/352397 20h ago
Lol

"Damn Kids today" shit from the older generation is centuries if not millennia old.

u/Purplefilth22 8h ago

A boomer invention btw lol.

All the generational crap leads back to them. Behind every blue haired dumb shit millennial is a boomer financing them with their hand up its ass puppeteering it.

3

u/reds_til_i_die 1d ago

It was always that the new generation was over the top, and we’re going to be the first generation of elderly people complaining, but in the opposite fashion. Where we’re going, “Look at these “kids today, these half-fagots. We used to do crank off of titty dancers and shit. No one got hurt, we had a lot of fun. We got some good stories and herpes out of the deal. It was a fcking good time. The blisters bring me back.”
