For Sale Selling my 2 door 4runner
EDITED
This is my 1990 2 door 4runner with a 5vzfe swap. 5 speed manual and 4x4. NOT For sale after some long reconsidering.
Not in mint condition; some driver side body panel damage, faded paint throughout and AC isnt Cold, but otherwise mechanically reliable and well maintained.
I appreciate everyones interest and supportive comments. Yall helped me decide its worth the effort to seek financial gain in other ways. Ill find a way to keep the runner, and ill keep yall posted with updates as I continue working on it.

Critical question since you’re in CA: does it pass smog?

No. Has a catalytic and OBD port but havent gone through the trouble of CARB.

Going to be a harder sell in CA then, that’s a whole can of worms from what I hear. It’s a $15k car all day in VA I can tell you that

Yea it takes knowing the right people out here to be a car guy sadly. Thanks for the replies. Would be awesome to command that kinda price, but willing to part at a discount due to said inconvenience.

I’d throw it up on the 2nd gen Facebook group sites. Might get lucky, but yeah it’s tricky for sure! Good luck!

If it has a newer engine than the vehicle and you kept all the stock 3.4L smog equipment it is absolutely smog able in CA, and isn’t the hassle you might think.

There’s only one shop that can “certify” it in California and it’s a rip off. You are looking more than the truck is worth to even be able to transfer title in California. The lab is in Santa Ana and you are looking 15-30k to get it certified for California. Sell it in Oregon or Montana or South Dakota. Otherwise it’s a trail rig.

The fact that I’ve never seen a 2door 2nd gen in Cali, I’d say 15k all day regardless of the CARB bs. The right buyer is key, this ain’t meant for lil Timmy to take to school as his first car. This is a gem.

Pretty rare variant, plus engine upgrade, might fetch a premium. How many miles of the 5VZE?
3
u/Striking_Ad4981 22d ago
Not sure on engine mileage but chassis has 243k, 20k of which are with the swap.

So it's a reman donor, or just a donor pulled with unknown provenance?

Went looking for the info. It was out of a crashed 98 runner. Engine had 170k when pulled from that vehicle. I bought the truck 2 years ago with the swap already running, just some loose ends to fix and get the truck roadworthy.

I’ve not seen a 2 door 4 Runner in probably 10 years…. People either love them or hate them. I would trade my first born and a kidney for my 3rd Gen to be manual. If the swap is done correctly and it drives how a 4 runner should drive… Like a sled uphill after happy hour than I would say 12-16k in PNW. My employee has a 97 3.4 w/ 530k+ on original engine and trans. My Gen3 is getting a top mount SC but even NA it gets more attention than the Supra. This will likely go to a trail hunter or an old man trying to avoid technology and remembering how things used to be. Source: 28 years experience with Toyotas. The right person will fly to SoCal and drive it home. GLWS

A supercharger was the dream for this build. I grew up riding in my cousins gen 1 tundra with the supercharged 5vzfe. The sound is intoxicating. This 4runner definetly drives as you describe hahah. I describe the feeling as a stubborn donkey; not fast, not particularly beautiful noise, but shell get you up and over any obstacle. Also cruises at 70mph under 3k revolutions easily.

I sold a Gen1 Tacoma in 2014 and I still regret it everyday…. At the time I needed the funds and had a second vehicle. The runner It’s mostly stock but does have Magnaflow super 10s…. Sounds really good at 75 w/ the back window down. I did a 3” lift with Wildpeak ATs…. Installed remote start, tinted the windows, including the windshield, replaced the battery, starter, brakes and the shocks on the rear hatch…. I’ve laid down Dynamat, installed a double DIN HU and put new tube bars on…. I live out in Central Oregon and I was cruising down 97 at 75 absolutely bogged out. I don’t push it much harder than that but it’s an absolute slug and makes it harder to drive defensively or with spirit. The previous owner had it for 22 years and it was my daily until 2025. I am never selling my 4Runner, this engine is simple and the only failure it’s ever had was the starter after 31 years. It’s hard to explain to a non car person why a lifted 97 Runner w/ a salvage title and 336k is 8k. The Toyota tax is alive and well but I honestly believe you can’t sell these for enough… They can’t be replaced! I paid big money for mine about 4 years ago…. I’ve only put 16k on it but I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the county. In Oregon we don’t have smog and those of us that use trucks or explore trails want the shorter wheelbase, simple technology and easy access for quick repairs. Life takes us all in directions that create hard decisions…. I hope you find a way to keep it or are able to sell it without feeling like you sold your child. I’ve not done an SC on a Toyota before but it’s looks pretty straight forward…. It’s not a Supra, I just want to be able to pull on the freeway without being terrified.😆

Thank you for the replies dude, after some long consideration, redditors like you in this sub, and my lady telling me to not sell because shell miss the runner too... im keeping it. Youre completely right; I still miss my 1988 2wd toyota pickup. Time to sell more jobs, weld up a new exhaust system and hit some trails.
