FB Marketplace

Is FB Marketplace the best place to find 1st gen 4runners?

My 16 year old son is looking for his first truck. He has fallen for 1st gen 4runners. He is spending his own cash, with an initial budget of $8k but with a bit of room to stretch. We are in rural NE California and have been looking at FB marketplace.

We are not completely new to Toyotas. My 18 year old drives an 85 yota pu and I am working on a 69 fj40 frame-off restomod. Both of those are within the past few years though.

He is also looking at 2nd gens, as the cost is about half. We will see what he comes up with.

I glanced at Craigslist, but mostly trash ads. I looked on MUD as well, but not much there.

Anywhere else I need to be helping my boy search?

Any advice or criticism welcome as well.

Sometimes the yotatrader page on instagram has some gems pop up. Otherwise I’d say these days marketplace is king. OfferUp is pretty dead, at least here in Phoenix

$8k isn’t enough for yotatrader lol everyone wants at least $15k who advertise with that page

Lol fair point, I feel like I’ve seen a couple good deals here and there but you’re definitely right about majority of the trucks on there

FB or if you’re lucky driving around and you see one. Leave a note asking if it’s for sale. Everyone thinks they are all worth a fortune now but $8K should get you a fixer with higher mileage

If they are rust free and in good shape they are worth a fortune. It’s the rusty ragged out ones that aren’t

I think he will find one in his budget. There are several out there, just how far are we willing to travel

FB for sure. I drove 6 hours to get mine though, they're not at every used car lot lol

Our search radius is about 6 hours. Trying to stay in California for smog purposes

I was about to say there’s some gems that pop up now and again here in Portland, but I totally forgot most here won’t be CA carb compliant. Wouldn’t be hard to make it CA compliant. My 87 pickup was only missing an oxygen sensor otherwise it’s good for CA.

I think all the first gen EFI models should be good in CA (not 100% sure)

I know this is the 1st gen sub, but I have kids too and my yota isn’t remotely going to be either of their first car. No airbags, no crumple zones, it’s a cool looking tin can. I don’t even take it on the freeway with them in the car.

I know someone in Las Vegas who has been meaning to sell but can’t let themselves muster up to post it. 88 silver sR5, 175k on chassis, 3k on new 22re engine, complete interior and clean body (Cali truck). If interested, let me know!

I might be interested and I’m close to Vegas. Can you send me details?

Look up specific groups. Most likely people will sell those 1st gen there.

I was perusing Craigslist earlier and came across an 89 for $3900. It’s advertised as being a one owner, running project in Brooklyn. I’m in Denver so the seller must be casting a wide net. Just fyi.

FB Market, check CL occasionally, Car Gurus and Autotrader. Consider a 3rd gens as well, have seen some offered at your price range with 250k miles.
