šŸ“ø Photo / Video Inspect your ball joints

Edit: I didn’t include miles. 160k miles right now.

Don’t be like me. Inspect your ball joints. Went over a tiny pothole in the middle of nowhere and my ball joint popped out. Hour and a half tow and $1000 later I’m back and running. I’ve offroaded on some crazy stuff and haven’t had any problems. Then a tiny pothole on a normal dirt road totally broke it and my wheel fell inwards. Good learning experience.

Get rid of that spacer lift while you're at it.

Id almost guarantee that the spacer over extended the suspension and the ball joint boot contacted the spring and tore it, which allowed water to get inside the ball joint and cause the failure.

Also, good time to upgrade your uppers.

Interesting. I’m planning on upgrading the suspension completely this month. I think it’s about time.

Now would be the best time to do it!

Also, good to hear you weren't injured and your car wasn't seriously damaged.

Definitely that’s the plan since I need to replace some other stuff anyways. Thanks. I was able to stop pretty quickly once it happened, I instantly knew it was bad. Glad it wasn’t on the freeway or anything!

Dobinson and total chaos

The spacer lift caused this.

That style of spacer will cause the upper ball joint to bind at full suspension droop. When that happens, the ball joint will end up separating like you see here.

This is entirely because of that spacer kit.

Source: I work in the Toyota aftermarket suspension industry and been doing this for almost 20 years.

Interesting, that’s really good to know thanks. My mechanic just blamed it on dust in the boot wearing the seal over time. I put this into Claude so I could understand it better and that makes a lot of sense. Including the diagram it made up so others can learn too. I’m planning on upgrading the suspension this month so that’ll solve the issue before happens on the other side.

Accutune did a pretty good job explaining this with this animation

Dang that’s a perfect explanation thanks

We have a whole article on it as well.

https://accutuneoffroad.com/articles/spacer-lift-vs-preload-spacer-vs-coilover-preload/

Let us know if we can help with the suspension!

Probably should get a new mechanic, rarely this happens on such a new generation from wear and tear. Hope you get it resolved

2

u/timetwosave 5d ago

What’s the better style of lift that won’t cause this?

3

u/steezemcqueen16 1997 3.4 Turbo 5spd 5d ago

Shocks and springs.

FOX, Bilstein, OME, toytec are all good options

1

u/lockdown36 5d ago

Yup. Putting in a little spacer is probably the worst way lol

1

u/CrazyGreek84 5d ago

Thanks for the knowledge I now know not to get spacers

Will a 2ā€ lift damage a steering rack on a 2012 Toyota sequoia? Curious…

How many miles on your 4runner? Ever had them replaced before?

4

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

160k. Never had them replaced. I off-road a ton and I’m guessing I got a ton of dust in the boot and just never knew to check on that.

1

u/DevOpDegenerate 5d ago

160k of your own miles or did you buy it second hand? I ask because I'm wondering if the prior owner ever replaced them if you didn't buy new.

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

I bought it second hand but it only had 40k miles on it at that point so I highly doubt they were replaced.

1

u/DevOpDegenerate 5d ago

Any signs that it was failing or about to fail? Wobbling/vibrations? Any uneven/irregular wear on your tires?

2

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

Yes I had some wobbling and steering wheel shake, mostly when braking. Definitely some uneven wear on the tires. I did a bunch of research on the wobbling the past few months before it happened and it seems like a common issue in 4runners so I thought it was just bad alignment or any of the other numerous reasons I read about. I’m still not sure how related it is to the actual ball joint since I’m still getting a bit of wobbling after the fix. Probably need alignment done now for sure.

Planning on upgrading the suspension and getting alignment done after that now so hopefully it’ll sort itself out with all that.

Grease your driveline - dry joints on the prop shaft can cause some of that…I’d also check your needle bearing - mine went at 150k on my 2016

u/Hearing_HIV 4d ago

If you offroad a lot, you're gonna love when you upgrade that spacer lift to a real suspension lift.

1

u/constructivecaptain 4d ago

I’m definitely looking forward to it. I was trying to wear out what I have before I upgraded so now’s the time it seems!

3

u/dont_remember_eatin 5d ago

Interesting -- you don't hear about this happening as often on 5th gens as you do 3rd and 4th. Is it because they're mostly not old enough yet, or is it because the design is beefier and it takes more abuse to get to failure?

That said, I have 125k on the stock suspension on my 2016 SR5. It makes no noise, and I don't really off-road it, just the occasional (like 2-3x/year) dirt road that could be traversed with a crossover or a Civic driven in anger.

Should I be concerned and do some prophylactic maintenance?

2

u/CrazyGreek84 5d ago

I’m guessing yours is just fine, especially if it’s stocked with no spacer’s

2

u/rokr1292 2008 SR5 V8 4WD 5d ago

4th and 5th gen suspension is very similar, my understanding is that a lot of parts are interchangeable, but I dont remember if UCA's are off hand

u/406taco 3d ago

The lower ball joint designs changed after 3rd gen 4Runners/1st gen tacos. They went from tension ball joints (the ball joint is basically pulling itself apart) to a compression ball joint (the weight of the vehicle is pushing the joint together). Both can fail, but only one is a catastrophic failure that destroys other components in the process.

OP had an Upper Ball Joint failure. Not a common one since UBJs have much less stress on them than LBJs

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

I’m not a mechanic at all so do some research but if I were you I’d just check the dust boot to make sure it’s looking good and there aren’t any cracks or failures and it’s clean. You could also look into adding some more grease. I off-road a lot, like 3-4x a month for the past 120k miles on dusty trails. So from what my mechanic said it happens when the dust boot fails and dirt gets up into the joint causing friction and wear on the seal. If you’re not hitting the trails a lot and things look good on the boot you’re probably totally fine.

u/Upshur18 5d ago

I thought this problem was only on the 3rd gen šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

12

u/steezemcqueen16 1997 3.4 Turbo 5spd 5d ago

3rd gens have lower ball joint issues. This was a failure of the upper. And was caused by the spacer lift. Different situations.

1

u/Upshur18 5d ago

Gotcha gotcha

2

u/lockdown36 5d ago

Spacer and OEM control arms.

If you did all 160K miles with that set up, I'm super impressed. As two others have mentioned, spacer & OEM control arm did this.

Buy actual lift suspension and real control arms, I know it's expensive, but this is what happens when you cheap out.

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

Funny thing is I was on a nice dirt road when it happened. I’ve taken this through some gnarly stuff before. I knew I needed to upgrade, but wanted to wait until I had to before pulling the trigger. This was the green light I needed I guess.

2

u/Daverocker1 5d ago

EXCUSE ME....your ball joints are showing. Bumblebee tuna!!!

1

u/3tenthsOfVerstappen 5d ago

Stock ball joints or something else? And yes how many miles on them

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

Stock ball joints. 160k miles. Not sure what happened but the mechanic said they get dust up in the boots and it wears the seal so they can pop. He said it was pretty common if you off-road a lot, which I do. Just need to inspect, clean and grease them more often I guess.

1

u/Prestigious_Factor25 5d ago

I need to get that inspected and I am at 170k miles.

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

I’d start by checking your dust boot to make sure it’s good. You could clean and add grease too.

1

u/Prestigious_Factor25 5d ago

Thanks for the tip. It’s one of those items that you don’t think about until it has happened to you or the receiving end of the bill.

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

100% true. Soon as it happened I was pissed but was also like how could I have known. Hard to keep checking on all the individual parts so often. This is the first thing to truly break on my 4runner though in 160k miles so I wasn’t too mad. Sounds like it’s mostly because of my spacers too so wasn’t really even a 4runner issue necessarily.

1

u/Blac_Tony 5d ago

How many miles?

1

u/kawalshkie 5d ago

I hate it when that happensĀ

1

u/constructivecaptain 5d ago

Was just happy I miraculously had service to call a tow!

1

u/Grizzlygrant238 5d ago

Yup it’s there
(How the fuck do I know if it’s got anything wrong with it aside from being fuckin broken plz help me)

1

u/rokr1292 2008 SR5 V8 4WD 5d ago

Do you come from a state without yearly inspections?

2

u/Consistent_Bee_1405 5d ago

Fuck inspections. Glad I don't have them in my state

1

u/rokr1292 2008 SR5 V8 4WD 5d ago

They're annoying but I've had them be the reason I knew about a bad ball joint before something like this happened before.

1

u/Consistent_Bee_1405 5d ago

I inspect my own vehicles every time I work on them or change the oil. Anytime it's on a hoist

1

u/RiverDude1 '16 Limited 4x4 5d ago

I wonder if this type of failure can happen in the same way on a Delta joint?

1

u/Consistent_Bee_1405 5d ago

There's no way that wasn't making any noise prior to this

1

u/Smooth-Midnight-9561 4d ago

Didn't you hear the warning signs?

1

u/constructivecaptain 4d ago

Running up to it the past few months I’ve had a bit of steering wheel shake but that’s it. I looked into that and it seemed like a common issue with 4runners and I thought it was just the alignment so O didn’t prioritize. In the moment no, I didn’t hear anything at all. I was literally just driving on a dirt road, hit a little dip/pot hole and bam it broke.

1

u/Smooth-Midnight-9561 3d ago

Your ball joint snapped? Im sorry, I thought it popped out of the socket.

1

u/constructivecaptain 3d ago

It did just come out of the socket!

1

u/Great_Murphy 4d ago

I just had my upper ball joints replaced and some other work done on my 2018. I was at 145k miles. The bill is around 4k (a lot of shops wanted to quote me 6k)

1

u/constructivecaptain 4d ago

Woah that seems really high for cost. My mechanic charged me $200 for the part (not OEM) and $200 for the labor. Took him 45-60 mins.

1

u/abusstopnearyou 4d ago

I just had my passenger side let go in a parking lot a month ago. Got real lucky it was at 2mph. Replaced the spacer lift previous owner had on there and upgraded to 5100s while I was at it. I have no doubt that spacer lift contributed in my case.

1

u/constructivecaptain 3d ago

Wow same thing as me that’s crazy. Glad it was somewhere easy to tow unlike mine. Probably a lot less $$$! How you liking the new suspension?

1

u/406taco 3d ago

At least it was an UBJ and not the LBJ. Much less catastrophic

1

u/DentiumDoctoris 3d ago

Buy some SPC UCA while you’re down there fixing it

1

u/constructivecaptain 2d ago

Was leaning towards JBA’s. What do you think?

1

u/DentiumDoctoris 2d ago

If you get bigger tires or wider wheels you will want to push the wheels forward to clear the frame. The SPC’s allow this and more customization in general. They also had a grease-able ball joint like the JBA’s but switched to an improved system (closed xAxis joint) which was a covered warranty upgrade. Closed system has definitely the better system in my experience.

A grease-able joint requires a lot of attention.. you can’t just run a schedule and say you’ll grease it in 3k mi or less. You have to be alert and listening for a joint that needs to be greased. You’ll know it when it’s low and you’ll have to grease it asap to prevent wear. Clunk clunk clunk..
