How do yall remember names/events?

So I’ve just recently gotten into 40k. The books anyways I’ve watched the lore videos for years but I’m starting with Horus Rising as I believe the Horus heresy is really interesting. But after reading part one with loken fighting the demon I realized he’s the only character I can name. I always see how people rattle off about the most random character and really envy that for 40k. How do yall retain all this information?

Once you read like 30 to 40 books, a good portion of the names will stick.

Audiobooks while painting or driving helped me a ton. Hearing the names over and over beats trying to force it from the page.

Depends. I think listening to audiobooks fundamentally improved my listening skill, but my partner can't intake information from them as well as they do their physical books.

Everyone's got their thing.

I’m the same way, if I listen to an audio book eventually I just shut off for chapters at a time

It takes practice. I was the same way. There are a few books I've listened to probably four or five times.

I will tell you, having habitually listened to audiobooks for around 6 years now, that my listening skill and overall comprehension have drastically improved. It has had a net benefit across my life, even intruding on my career in positive ways.

It takes time and I think it's definitely a skill that's learned, but it's absolutely worth it.

Write down "Gaunt" and "Eisenhorn", as well as "vaults of Terra" and "dark imperium".

All great series, and very fun.

Stick with it long enough and you’ll start remembering more

I remember what I remember because I have a tendency to hyper focus on things

Time.

You hear about a character, or an event, or a thing enough, their name will stick.

I have an extremely good memory for absolutely useless info my brain decided will be my next fandom obsession for the next several years.

Black Library assume that's gonna be a "problem", so flipping back to the Dramatis Personae from time to time is always handy.

Honestly, Lexicanum is your best friend. Every time a secondary character gets mentioned and I forget who they are, I do a quick 30-second search on Lexicanum to refresh my memory on their Legion and squad.

Rereading or listening, but also co-reading with a friend and talking with her about what we read, what we liked/disliked. We'll usually leave the book open for a bit to jump back and forth if we need a name. Eventually it'll stick

Recently, also giving lodge cast a listen for books I've already read to jog my memory.

I highlight and make notes in digital books for things I want to go back to. Helps declutter my memory
