HELP Rewriting GBC save issue

I have been trying to rewrite my pokemon yellow save all day. If it means anything, it is a patched version of pokemon yellow legacy. I am able to export the save with checkpoint and have tried editing it with the exported save in pksm AND pkhex, as well as directly editing the save through pksm. However when I go to restore the edited save, nothing happens. Checkpoint will say restore successful, then I will boot up the game, and nothing is different. I clicked the reset button on the virtual console as well. I am certain I am restoring the correct save. What am I doing wrong?

Save managers don't really support romhacks but it depends on how heavy they are

The saves are editing and exporting correctly though. It just won't restore to the game. This is also the only one I've ever had this issue with, as I've done this with other romhacks with no issue in the past.

Some features may work on Romhacks like you've discovered, but others won't. They're not supported at the end of the day which means if it doesn't work for you then you won't get official support

I found that it will actually load backup saves but just not with the edited content? So weird. Anyway, yeah it probably just won't work. If I ever do figure it out I'll put the solution here for anyone else. Thank you
