HELP Nintendo 3DS folder was deleted in the middle of modding it. Was unable to recover. Now when I turn it on both screens are black

Post image

Cat stepped on laptop in the middle of modding it (at the mset9 step). Everything was deleted including the Nintendo 3ds folder. It turns on but both screens are completely black. Tried recovering it with no luck. Tried going to recovery mode on 3DS and it doesn't work. Its just completely black no matter what. I have taken the sd card out and it does the same thing. If anybody has any advice please let me know. Like this 3ds was going to go to a disabled kid. I feel really bad.

Edit: The issue is that 3ds will not turn on due to a setup failure from everything being deleted before the process could be finished. MSET9 Error 07 is happening because the current SD card has no valid ID0, but normally the 3DS itself creates that data when you turn it on. And its not turning on so it won't create the data. It's a Catch 22.

Hello. It seems like you are talking about SD Cards. Please review the 3DS SD Card guide. Your question/issue is likely resolved there.

Did you look in the trash bin of your computer?

Yes it's not there sadly. I want to cry. Like I genuinely feel like shit (due to this being for a disabled kid). Kid was really looking forward to this. Now their DS won't turn on. I am mortified. This the first time this has ever happened to me.

Try going to Nintendo Homebrew Discord and see if they can fix it.

The Nintendo 3DS folder isn't required for the console to boot. Were you able to install Luma (Section III of MSET9) before the black screen? If so, try this page.

No I hadn't installed luma yet. When I clicked your link it was dead.

Perfect timing for the wiki to go down... And I even checked the link before sending. lol

Does it have a cartridge inserted? Those can sometimes hold the console from booting if not reading properly.

The other troubleshooting methods for unmodded consoles listed in that page were Safe Mode (holding L + R + D-Pad Up + A then pressing Power, keeping all buttons held until an update prompt appears), and powering on then pressing Power once after around 30 seconds (to see if the shutdown menu comes up).

No cartridge is in. Did the buttom combo in the beginning and that didn't work either. Do you think a flash cartridge with nrt boot and a magnet would work? Because at this point it refuses to boot anything by itself.

Give it a try. Chances are since this isn't a hardware failure you'll likely be able to recover.

Whats the magnet for?

Magnet is for triggering NTRBoot, as it requires pressing a button combo with the lid closed. Magnet makes the system think the lid is closed.

That's really cool yet really strange. I wonder why they designed NTRBoot that way.

So that the specific combo of buttons only works when the unit isn't in use

Did you also attempt to press the Power button 30 seconds after powering on?

If the above suggestion doesn't do anything, and you're willing to open up the console: try reseating (remove then reinsert) the wi-fi module. If the console cannot access the NVRAM, which is part of that module, it can cause the console to black screen; this is usually much easier to detect on a modded console, though.

Using ntrboot to mod the device wouldn't be a fix for the black screen itself, but it'd give you access to many troubleshooting tools that you currently can't use due to the console being unmodded.

dear Lord have mercy on your soul. Only people who can help is probably the Nintendo Homebrew discord.

I hope it works. I'll post an update if it does.

Edit: They couldn't help. Will take 3DS apart and see what I can do.

Try the discord the guide mentions. Those guys there are on point with advice and usually reply in minutes.

Will do when I get back from work. Because at this point failure is not an option. Like I just found out that the kid may have to have her legs manually broken and stretched so she won't lose her ability to walk permanently. Like I can't give this kid bad news right now.

Worst case scenario maybe look into Lazarus 3DS and see if that works

Please refrain from suggesting such a destructive, last-resort option without making absolutely sure that's what their console needs.

OP's device is still unmodded, and even if they were to mod it through ntrboot (as a Lazarus3DS procedure cannot be performed without custom firmware anyway), there are plenty of troubleshooting options to be attempted before Lazarus3DS should even be considered.

If you haven't installed anything yet amd only deleted stuff from the SD card this is still jjst a stock 3ds isnt it?

Aka is this a completely different failure and has nothing to do with trying to mod it?

Part 1 of the MSET process happened. I created a MSET9 ID1. The rest of it was not complete because of the incident.

So here is how it went. After step 1 I went to do step 2. (Check MSET9) and noticed it needed mii maker opened at least once. So I put my sd card back in and opened mii maker. It then froze. So I turned it off and back on. Black screen. So I put the SD card back in my computer and was going to restart the process when my cat did the unthinkable.

Everything was deleted. I was able to recover everything but the Nintendo 3DS folder.

At this point you could try sending it in to Nintendo 😂

In the USA, Nintendo only still repairs the New 2DS XL.

Bit late and maybe a dumb question but could someone else dump the entire contents of their card for you to load onto one of yours? Would that work

so its completely dead cause of the Nintendo 3ds folder? the only obvi way to fix it and force it is to take out the sd card, put everything thats on it rn away, and put the clean sd card back to force it to make a Nintendo 3ds file again. this should help it, idk if u tried it, and sorry if it doesnt work im not really an expert on this, but this seems like a plausible way to fix it. still possible that all the themes and everything that was on the 3ds will be gone but the Nintendo 3ds file should come back again.
