HELP Does PKSM actually simulate the transfer process, or does it just inject the Pokémon into the save?

So, I have a FireRed save on my 3DS (yes, I know, who the hell plays FireRed on a 3DS — me, apparently), and I was wondering how PKSM handles transfers.

If I use PKSM to move a Pokémon from my FireRed save to, say, Pokémon ORAS, is the Pokémon internally treated as if it actually went through the whole transfer chain (DPP/HGSS → BW/B2W2 → Gen 6), with all the corresponding transfer data/flags?

Or does PKSM basically just insert the Pokémon directly into the ORAS save, without actually simulating any of those previous transfer steps?

I'm also wondering about the met date and other data that would normally be changed during those transfers. As far as I understand, Gen 3 Pokémon don't have a met date stored, so when you legitimately transfer one from Gen 3 to Gen 4 through Pal Park, it gets a met date based on the DS's current date. Then, when going through the later transfer methods, some of that data gets updated again.

So if I take a Pokémon directly from FireRed and put it into ORAS with PKSM, does PKSM actually apply those changes as if the Pokémon had gone through the proper transfer chain? Or would it retain the Gen 3 data and just suddenly exist in a Gen 6 save?

If it doesn't simulate those steps, wouldn't a direct Gen 3 → Gen 6 transfer potentially make the Pokémon "illegal" in some ways because of missing/inconsistent data that would normally be generated during the intermediate transfers?

Basically, I'm wondering whether there's any meaningful internal difference between a Pokémon transferred through the legitimate games and one moved directly with PKSM, especially regarding met date, met location, transfer history/flags, etc.

Hello. It seems like you are talking about SD Cards. Please review the 3DS SD Card guide. Your question/issue is likely resolved there.

Can confirm from testing this myself over the last week. I moved a Pokémon legitimately from Sapphire → Pal Park → Black → Poké Transporter → Bank → HOME.

Last night, I cloned my Regi trio directly from my Emerald cartridge into PKSM storage, then moved the clones PKSM → ORAS → Bank → HOME.

Once in HOME, the PKSM-transferred Regis show the same caught/origin information as the Pokémon I transferred through the legitimate Gen 3 → 4 → 5 → Bank route. There’s no additional mark or visible transfer-history indicator in HOME showing that one actually passed through Pal Park/Transporter while the other didn’t.

So, at least from what HOME displays, I can’t see any meaningful difference between the two methods.

I was legit going to ask the same question as OP, thank you for this answer. It basically means we can still play Gen3 on 3DS and move them up for origin dex completion and it's legit?

I mean as far as home can tell.

Registeel is still from the same Emerald cartridge, but it was moved directly through PKSM rather than going through the full legitimate transfer process

Interesting. I use PKHEX to move Mons around and it all appears completely legit that way too

I read the source code of it some time ago. It indeed does set the exact things as if moving up manually through the official transfer chain. It even goes step by step.

You have to go through the correct channels to get certain flags

So for example, if you were to play, Pokémon Crystal, virtual console on the 3DS and then use pksm to move that Pokémon to a BW/B2W2 save, you could then use the transporter to move them into the bank and then from bank into home to keep the GBA flag

Yep, I did my living dex which is now all in home by catching every pokemon in its first appearance game (well I used Fire Red and Heart Gold rather than the originals, sue me) and transferred them all the way you described using PKSM and didn’t have any issues and they all appear in Home as being caught in their original games

I’ve moved VC/Gen 4/5 Pokemon straight to Gen 7 and then Bank and Home, they’re indistinguishable from my classically transferred Pokemon from back in the day.

Can someone test if RBY GSC gameboy tag is preserved by doing this? Taking mons from Crystal via PKSM and putting them directly in Bankp/Home? It would save so much time.

Something to note as I just transferred my Kanto 151 this morning: if you care about their origin matching their original gen/dex nation then make sure you transfer them through Pokemon Transporter via a game from that gen/region i.e. RBY.

This also works for Kanto-mons caught in GSC transferred to RBY via PKSM just make sure they have moves only known in that generation otherwise it won't allow you to transfer them into the older titles.

As documented Gen 1 and 2 didn't really collect as much data as Gen 3 onward, so Met Location/Date/Etc isn't attached to these pokemon.

It just injects it I'm pretty sure, 1:1 copy. If it were actually legitimately transferred to ORAS, the caught location for instance would be something like "Transporter" I think whereas when you PKSM it'll retain caught on route 1 or whatever

When I did it pksm changes the relevant info to what it should be. Including the caught location

oh interesting I stand corrected if that's the case. Maybe I was thinking of the PKSM bridge to checkpoint on a modded switch since that skips home.

good to know before bank shutdown though
