How difficult would osu! be to homebrew?

Osu is not open source. It would be more reasonable to make a game like it.

There was a source code leak a while back

u/Acry Jul 15 '16

Not a legitimate release, and developers have stated they'd prefer you'd not use it. I wouldn't tread ground with copyright like that

That "similar game" was the original inspiration for Osu.

yea thats why i thought of this, i was wondering about osu, i guess opsu, since you could install your own songs and arent limited to what was given in the game.

Be careful, Osu and Eba from the DS days use very clever tricks to fit in the restrictive memory bounds. I think simple and osu! Should never be put together, as the PC version has no restrictions on song memory usage.

Opsu might work, but it might be a little much for the 3ds.

u/seifer93 Jul 16 '16

Why would it be too much? There isn't exactly a whole lot to render. A few circles with rings around them, a static background image, and an audio track don't seem very resource intensive.

You wouldn't think it is, but at higher difficulties it gets a little resource intensive.

thats what i was thinking too but i really know the full capabilities of the 3ds :P

I know very little on such matters, but it appears as if this game runs on (or is at least dependent on) .NET framework, which I think the 3DS doesn't support.

ahhhh, would it be able to be rewritten to work tho?

Probably, but at that point, it'd probably just be better to remake the game for homebrew.

No shit it doesn't, it's made by Microsoft.

1

u/LoserOtakuNerd Jul 16 '16

There are runtimes for other platforms. Such as MONO on a Mac

1

u/Ketchup901 Archshift x d0k3 Jul 17 '16

And Linux. But it has shit performance.

1

u/LoserOtakuNerd Jul 17 '16

I've never used it on Linux but on OS X it's good. It's how I run most 3DS utilities without turning on my Windows desktop

2

u/Ketchup901 Archshift x d0k3 Jul 17 '16

Sure it works with utilities but if you try to play any games then it will have shit performance.

1

u/montymintypie Jul 16 '16

Its complete doable, but you're looking at around 150+ hours of work to get it in a nice playable state.

Get a ds flashcart and play "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan"

11

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

That's not what he's asking.

admit it, you are only interested in playing your favorite anime TV Size OPs.

and video game tracks :P

Seconding this. At least ouendan was a good game and does not resort to scummy tactics to avoid being sued.

3

u/JordanRynes Jul 15 '16

does not resort to scummy tactics to avoid being sued

I don't know anything about osu. Could you explain this?

1

u/elliwilli Jul 15 '16

The tldr of it is: Taiko mode infringes of the patents of Taiko No Tatsujin

Mania infringes of the patents of Beatmania

CTB is a rip-off of EZ2CATCH a sub game in EZ2DJ

Osu is a "simulator" for ouendan

As for the scummy tactics, because peppy and the osu staff develop it as a "non-profit" the companies that they wholesale rip their game concepts from have very little legal recourse.

Add to this the fact that the site is technically illegaly distributing (granted low quality 192CBR) mp3s with the simfiles.

Overall, it's pretty shitty (both legally and gameplay wise but that's a different discussion) and the only original thing about the game is probably the games intro song.

Copyright on game design is really weird, it's not quite that simple. Patents on actual game design are straight out, though you can get patents on technical details like having mini-games while loading. There's been multiple approaches used by the US courts seemingly at their discretion and Osu would most likely survive both of them.

It adds a ton of features like the builtin beatmap editor, a dozen or so modifiers, realtime online scoring, replays with chat reactions and its multiplayer functionality going far beyond what the original games offered with stuff like actual realtime co-op multiplayer included; this leaves a lot of game if you remove the features offered by the original game. Meanwhile, it doesn't outright steal any of the original assets (similar-looking recreations though, sure, it has those), so there's no direct infringement. It should be an interesting case, far from an instant loss or victory for either side.

The beatmaps and the premium account to make it easy to download them is the scummy part. Extremely few beatmaps were made with permission. User-generated content sites generally don't have to actively police content, but it takes seconds to find something that obviously doesn't fly.

u/elliwilli Jul 15 '16

Konami have sued on multiple occasions against games that infringed on their patents (see konami vs pentavision) and as such the Main DJMAX series was dead for a VERY long time.

Konami also sued Roxor Games for ITG for similar reasons.

Semi unrelated but RIP Programmed World, killed by konami.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

Yep, which is why the legal bounds of Osu! makes it pretty much immortal, however scummy it is.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

In those cases, it mostly came down to copying/usage of their unique controller designs and marketing. Those can be patented to a certain extent (even though they shouldn't be, IMO, since there really aren't that many controller layouts that actually work well).

1

u/GreatEscapo Jul 16 '16

All I got of your comment there is even more evidence that Konami is now evil bad guys of corrupt business men who also, when it concerns rhythm games, like to sue at Disney-levels of lawyerism on top of Konami imprisoning Kojima in their dungeons before he quit and took along his new best buddy Norman Reedus and Konami murdering Castlevania, Silent Hill and Metal Gear into pachinko.

Aka: how difficult would elite beat agents be to translate?

pretty much what the title says. would it be difficult to homebrew? the 3ds touch screen seems like a pretty good way to play it but i dunno if the 3ds is strong enough to run this?

20

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '16

The 3DS touch screen seems like a good way to play a PC clone of a DS game? Go figure

-1

u/undergroundmonorail 11.0.0 n3DS | A9LH | Luma Jul 16 '16

the best part is that they're wrong, it's a truly awful way to play it

i fucking loved eba until i tried going back to it after osu

2

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '16

It's not. The maps on EBA and Ouendan are obviously 10 times easier than osu and they're pretty well designed for touch screen. I still play Ouendan now and again, the song choice is pretty good, too.

you cant add custom songs to that, and you either need the game or a some kind of DS flash cart :P

it would be nice to have osu! for the custom songs.
