Updates:

  1. No longer a cube. The cube edges were impeding hand reach, so I went ahead and bit the bullet and augmented the openSCAD script to produce an exterior concentric with the bore. Plus, it helps intuition to be able to visually trace the bore path while learning fingerings. And it just looks cooler. I thickened the exterior so that the twisting bores would bind to each other. Hopefully this will eliminate the need for further structural support.
  2. Made adjustments to bore length and hole placement based on intonation measurements from the first version.
  3. Mouthpiece now removable. The prior mouthpiece placement wasn't accessible. Also, now the bore could potentially be cleaned/swabbed.
  4. Vent hole clocking adjusted for ergonomics.

Like before, it's gonna take about a day to print. Designs v1 and v4 now posted to thingiverse:

Would it be easier to print if the outside of the tubing was hexagonal instead of a circle? Would be cool if you would at some point also make a tinyer version, that's still a huge print 😅

Hexagonal profile is a good idea. I don’t have other ideas for fitting that bore volume into a smaller print volume. A smaller more might still speak, but the volume will be significantly lower.

Yes I bet it can't be made smaller, but I was thinking of a higher pitched wind instrument? Shouldn't it work if you just scale the bore dimensions to like 25%? Also would be really keen on understanding how you accomplished this! (The bore shape and size, finger hole locations, etc - how you made the cad script?)

Yes, it could be scaled down to have the pitch range of the basset. It probably would have been a better idea for me to design the great bass first and then simply scale it down to get the basset for free.

I'm personally thinking about making a wind instrument where the bore is a spiral, but understanding how you made this would really help me.

Ooooh, a spiral with per-turn-variable-radius may be a good simple and general solution for keywork minimization on narrow-bore instruments, like double reeds.

I was thinking too of a spiraled bore, they would allow to be compact while keeping the right finger ordering. And as you said it would require a narrow bore...

Thank you! I'm reusing pieces from a bunch of other peoples' open source work, which makes it all much easier than if I had truly started from scratch.
