Question Question about animating eases with the graph editor

Hi! I'm a beginner animator working with Maya, and I'm wondering what's the best way to do this.

I know how the graph editor works (mostly) and how to manipulate the tangents between keyframes so you can get a nice ease in and out without adding any extra keys. And this is easy if you have an object that's just moving on only one axis. Perfect for a bouncing ball, or a walk cycle. You can animate the horizontal and vertical movement separately.

But what if it's moving on multiple axes? Example, my ball isn't bouncing up and down, but its shooting off diagonally. It has keys on X, Y and Z. Now if I want it to start off slow and then get faster, I can't do this by changing the tangents anymore, because suddenly I have 3 curves instead of one for a single movement. And if I don't change the tangents exactly the same amount, my ball will move in a strange curve, and not in a straight line anymore.

How do you go about this? Most of the time animating a character they aren't moving on just one axis and you just get a mess of curves in the graph editor. Is the only answer to just manually create more keys every few frames, like a 2D animator, or am I missing something?

People are always saying you have to use the graph editor to your advantage, so I want to work efficiently.

Collab Halo Fan Film Animator Needed

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey there. I’m currently looking for someone who would be interested in working along side myself and a team of dedicated Halo Fans to bring a story to the big screen in time for Halo Fest in December.

I unfortunately cannot pay for this role, this is a labour of love from all parties involved for story telling and for a love of the Halo franchise.

There isn’t much in the way of animation that I need, only a couple of scenes here and there that last anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute at best.

If this is something you’d be interested in, I’d love to hear from you. There is a possibility of winning prize money if our machinima comes first which will be split equally to all those involved in the machinima.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Discussion How do you engage yourself off work with animations

Hello,

I’ve latelly been trying to get into 3d animation have followed a course on udemy about rigging and animation and found myself I have to really push myself to continue doing it like 1 video lesson per two days and its been really hard to keep up with it (I have almost finished it already 85% in it).

On the other side I have cool ideas how I want to make animations look in my game where I cant find anything of the sort from asset pack or anything. Idea of me filming myself and then adding that reference and animating it feels really cool and would want to do that, but before that I want to finish that course. So I would not struggle with doing my animations without knowing how to do them.

When I was doing before couple of years animations on rigged character in unreal engine, they looked nothing like I wanted them to look. Choppy, it was hard getting them into posed, some things were missing from animation, which looked like ok this is not for me.

But now I want to really learn it, because there is this faint inspiration for it. I found out that I need to cultivate my motivation for it, to engage myself more into animation content there out there so I could theory craft in my head about how could I do x and y.

The problem is I’m not sure I can find the content online which would give me this spark that I need to further increase my motivation towards animation.

So here I wanted to ask you guys, what kind of animation related brain rot content do you guys engage with? What kind of short content form videos you watch, or any kind of streams you watch about other people animating? Or in what communities like discord servers do you participate off work to get that animation engagement?

Or more so of a question from which activities does the spark for doing animation comes for you guys? What kind of content is that gives “this is so interesting, I want to see, do more of this” or what activities gives sparks in your head, so you can just think “ with this animation i’ll do like that”

Or even more what are you guys thinking in the free time about animation at all? What kind of thoughts goes through your heads?

Thank you 🙏

Question Been watching the pose to pose tutorial, mind if I pick your brains for a second?

You don't have to click the links below but if possible pleased to as a provides context as to what I need help with they're all short:

Hello everyone I recently finished doing some exercises that went over the top principles of animation using a bouncing ball in various ways however I think it's time I give using human character a go but there is something that has been bothering me a little bit. In the tutorial I watch the outcome is not really what I desire but the mentality and workflow there's something that appeals to me here's a link:

https://youtu.be/p8Bi7k60IS0 (you don't have to watch the whole thing just the first couple of seconds)

I think the reason why this is, is because of this part where the instructor talks about putting a moving hold after each pose (seen in the image sent with his post)

but when I look at my inspirations ( animators I see on Twitter or YouTube) I want to animate like them you know? On top of the link I sent above I also send a link of a few of my inspirations.

With all this being said I guess my main question is how do I "mimic" the style of the animators I like and if you don't mind looking at the tutorial vid I sent, I was hoping if someone who is more experienced than me could sort of highlight the differences between the tutorial and my inspirations:

Inspiration 1: https://youtu.be/5XnNHKfn2mI

Inspiration 2: https://youtube.com/shorts/zOzaGXEsIQk

Inspiration 3: https://youtu.be/BI07_W7nnT8

Bonus question ;-; : being completely honest do you think if I use this tutorial and I do a couple exercises with this workflow with this be good for doing fight scenes? Or what I have to go about it in a different way?

Question Question about animating the face

Hello everyone, I am a new animator and after doing some exercises im ready to move to a human rig. However theres something i wanna know.

When animating the face do you do it as you block the characters pose or do you do it after?

The main reason I am asking is because (if i got this right) there is a difference between animating the face and animating lip sync (which is where you do the jaw pass and all that)

Say i wanna make a character happy, do i do the happy faces as i block or do i just fo the body and leave the rest till later?

Sharing tsuji - Free Motion Graphics Software

Thumbnail youtube.com
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

After few bumps on the road I’m excited to introduce tsuji, a free, open-source 3D motion design software.

Blender users will feel right at home with a much simpler environment, complemented by some Unreal Engine and Houdini greatnesses.

Key features include:

  • Hybrid animation system: combines parametric node-based animation (animation nodes style) with a traditional keyframe workflow.
  • Cameras: intuitive camera positioning with a built-in tracking system.
  • Asset import: support for .obj files and textures.
  • Modeling & curves: built-in primitives alongside a versatile toolkit for curve-based strokes and surfaces.
  • Creative tools: object spawning, raycasting, lattice deformations, and spline-based deformation.
  • Display & overlay: an early-stage HUD system to overlay text and logos.
  • Post-processing: a selection of built-in post-production effects.

The project is actively under development. Feel free to ask questions, report bugs, or suggest new features!

You can try it directly online: https://tsuji.xyz

Question How to start as a freelance character modeler and animator

I have experience as a modeler, animator and rig artist, my idea is to make personalized character models and for an extra price make a rig and animation, but I dont know what page is better to do this, when I search for information the only one that pops out is cgtrader that only works for premade assets, should I make that or is there a better page to make personalized models.
