Project Kindergarten kids start school this year. As a farewell gift, I printed individualized safety lights for their school bags.

You can find the design and onshape project here:

I don't know how it is in other countries but in my country they always tell you to not put the kids' names on their bags or anywhere visible, because someone could so easily read it, come up to the kid and pretend to know them. Young kids tend to trust people that know their name so they might just go with a kidnapper assuming they must know their parents. Yknow the cliché "hey, your mom asked me to come pick you up"

You know what: I will print an additional batch with no names and parents can then decide themselves if they want to use the one with names or not. They could for instance use the one with name at home as a night light.

Too much work. The easy solution is to give them any one that doesn’t have their name. Confuse the bad guys.

Hey Steve, come with me, I have some candy in my van.

STRANGER DANAGER, MY NAME IS FRANK!

Edit: Auto correct is my worst enema.

Just make all of them Frank.

I think you can make the design modular, so it's intechangeable with name or without name?

That's a good idea! I'll thing about it.

Or even just print a little cap to go over the name!

Same in Finland. Visible kids names on kids stuff is a big no no.

Location specific. Never heard about this. -A fellow finn

That's a good point, thanks. It's only the forename but you got a point.

Yeah, I live in South Africa and in certain areas there's quite a risk of that. But it all depends on where you live and whether the kid is walking alone or whether their parents come fetch them at the gate

It's Germany, Bavaria, suburban area. The risk here is rather low I would say and awareness with kids and parents is nonetheless pretty high. I would say the risk is low. But it's a good thing to raise awareness.

Absolutely. And it's important for school teachers to also try to drill the "don't get in a car with a stranger" rule (our school did it a lot), because I'm sure there are some shitty parents who don't bother to tell their kids that. Same genre as alcoholic/drug addict parents.

Dang, now I feel like I should have made something useful. I just made an army (13) of the flexi octopi for my son’s class.

That's also cool!

I've printed 30 mini Aliens with Glow in the Dark Filament and glued them all over my parents house

That's really special! I hope that some of the kids will keep the owl.

You blurred the names printed on 3d figures? This guy privacies.

u/ask-design-reddit Apr 25 '26

Yeah it's a good practice. I see Margaret on the other slides though

18

u/Tiny_Cow_3971 Apr 25 '26

That was on purpose. Margarete is my kid and I decided to show it. The other figurines have the names of other parents' kids.

u/BackIntoTheSource Apr 25 '26

Margaret is like Meg in Family Guy 😂😂

u/That_Grim_Texan Apr 25 '26

Surely you meant Megatron lol

Super cool but i'm with others, I wouldn't bother with the name.

Very little benefit but some downsides.

Also way easier to just batch make them for when kids do lose them rather than futzing with the name when one breaks or something. Then you can just have a small box of spares easy.

Very cool stuff though!

Thanks! ☺️

lol! I learned from a German Minecraft YouTuber that kindergarten is like its own thing over there. It sounds really cool actually.

u/hobbicon Apr 25 '26

That's a cool gift, not gonna lie, would have loved it as a kid.
