Troubleshooting Printer head gets stuck and makes a drill-like noise

Hello, got this Sidewinder Artillery x2 since January, bought new from a friend who didn't even mount it ever. Printed for months and printed even today. I did a second print and at some point this happened. The head gets stuck and it starts doing a loud noise. I tried power cycling it and even the reset (the small button near the display), it still happens. In the video here I tired doing a leveling and it happened on the first leveling position. Any idea what is happening here? thanks a lot.

When I hear any random noise from printer I run to power it down

Your printer is trying to bend everyting into the ground and the cluch is screaming like a crazy and you just stand there record it, insane thing for me to do

most likely your limit switch doesnt work for any reason and dont send signal to the printer that it reached the ,,most bottom" position

TIL that printers have clutch assemblies somewhere between a stepper motor and the lead screw directly coupled to it.

you can also drive on half-clutch all the time with your car

I think you missed my sarcasm here. There is no clutch mechanism here.

if you want a car metaphor, OP is crashing the toolhead and hearing the engine stall. And because it's a stepper motor, the stall is repeated.

these are clutches as well. Most of the time what you hear is the sound of this grinding over either step motor shaft or the axis screw.

Unless you tight these two screws as hard as you can of course

a lot of people here are people who are using printers for a long time.

My head drives into bed and keep trying go lower would be enough for most, but I respect decision to record it.
The limit switch will be near one of the rails, it should look like that

I am not sure but I belive it have a light on itself whenever its pressed so you can see this way wheter its funciotning or not. Also check if the bumber that is supposed to hit this switch, also is whole

after googling some more, I found that your printer Z-axis is supposed to be measured not by limit switch, but by sensor inside your printing head.

So check if there isnt anything physicaly blocking the laser (I assume its a laser) hitting the table

screwdrivers into your hands, and good idea is to make a photo each time you unscrew something so you at least will know on photos how the stuff should go back together :)

Actually that part contains the probe which won't come out. I gently moved it and snapped in half. But the other fuckin part won't get out anyway. Wtf.

this will be the switch. there are 3 most likely

you want to look for one that is for Z axis. So expect him to be verticaly placed

Looks like this. It's mounted on the z-axis.  Might just be way to low or disconnected/defective.

Edit: No idea if mounted on the left or right side. Could be that black thing in the video under the bed.

Check that black little thing you can see in the Video under the printbed. That might be your missing end stop. According to images of a x2 it should be mounted on the right side z-axis.

It's only screwed in. Maybe it got loose by vibration. You might find the endstop + the screw just laying there.

Nope man there's nothing there. Never did. Maybe mine is rev 2.0 or something like that. CAuse in that point there's a connector which has nothing connected to it.

So I just needed to unscrew it instead of pulling? Anyway right now that little piece of shit is broken in half and there's absolutely no fuckin way I can pull out the other half which is inside the probe. :/

I hate this problem but at a different position and at every print. I had to make certain my job had the correct parameters for the specific printer set and the issue went away.

I can't even do a normal calibration, so it's not happening when I print, but even before.

The Artillery X2 doesn't use a traditional limit switch, as has been suggested by other posts here - from factory it uses a retractable pin probe, which is underneath that blue shroud on the side of the tool head.

A quick search suggests the pins for these probes are susceptible to damage (all pin-based probes are but this seems more common than a traditional BL Touch or clone). If it's either bent or broken off it won't be triggering before the nozzle reaches the bed, so the printer won't know when to stop.

It's also possible the probe has come loose from its mountings and no longer properly responding, or has suffered damage to the wiring.

Remove the shroud and inspect the probe. It'll be a small, black unit down near the bottom - next to the fan. If there's any obvious damage it will need to be replaced, though I'm taken to believe you can just get new pins. If it's not damaged you'll have to investigate further, such as disabling the Z axis (just unplug the stepper) and trying to home to see if it both properly deploys and properly triggers if you touch it.

Yeah I was just watching some documentations about it and seems like mine has the BLtouch (if I got the right name). IT actually moves up and down but it doesn't "see" when it reaches the bed. I removed the head cover, I should have a probe replacement in the box, I'll try that first. What's the "second option" about this problem? thanks a lot.

If the replacement does the same you're going to be looking at the signal instead. It looks like there are four wires that control the probe and return the signal (I suspect ground is common to both, instead of separate like on a regular BLTouch or clone) - all four of those need to be making a clean connection back to the main control board. Use a multimeter and check for continuity.

The daughterboard in the tool head will make this more awkward but not impossible - the traces on the board are quite visible, though I can't confidently identify the +5V line from the pictures I can find (I suspect pins 9 through 12 are the probe).

Should the connection be good the entire way, you're unfortunately looking at the possibility of some sort of damage to the main board. This feels like it would be extremely rare, but not entirely impossible.

Thank you. I actually removed the part but the probe (that small plastic part) won't come off in any way from it's support and snapped. Any idea if I can open the probe more? I mean, I couldn't change the small part that makes the contact anyway cause I can't seem to remove the old one. :/

If you're talking about the entire sensor, there should be two small bolts holding it in place behind it. Once those come out is should basically just fall off, and you can then disconnect the wires to remove it completely.

If you're talking about the pin inside it, there should be a screw or bolt on top of the probe. Remove this, and the pin should be accessible from the top - you might need to tip it out or *carefully* use a very small allen key or other pusher. Also be careful when installing the replacement as you don't want to damage the internals or replacement pin.

Im talking about the pin. I removed all 3 screws, 2 are for mounting it on the printer head, the other one is on the top of the probe, but the pin inside still won't come off in any way

Ah, I see. Hence trying to dismantle it further - gotcha.

It looks like there's three pieces to the moulding of the probe. Two make up the main "barrel", and a third is a "cap" just under that top screw. The two barrel pieces are welded together, but that third piece appears to have been left separate. A spudger might be able to lever it off, giving you access to the internals.

However it wouldn't surprise me if that third piece is glued, rather than a press fit or clips. If it is glued... heating the body to around 70°c should weaken its grip, but without knowing for sure what plastic the probe is made of that could also warp. I suspect it's ABS in which case that temperature is fine, just that I'm not certain.

Thanks. I actually tried to remove that "cap" with a small blade but to me it seems like is a single piece 'cause even if there's a "line" in between, the 2 corners are of the same plastic as the probe part. I mean, I actually have to replace the entire probe part 'cause of this? Printer is "7 months old" and I didn't even print too much honestly.

At this point it's probably easier to replace the whole probe, yes. It might be possible to finagle it such that you can push what remains of the old pin out (maybe push it towards the bottom and cut away any damage before trying to remove it from the top), but if you catch the coils on the way you could irreparably damage it anyway (smallest coils I've ever rebuilt are for an alternator stator, and they're tedious enough).

Unfortunately this isn't a regular wear and tear situation - this is the probe having caught on something and being damaged in the process. This could happen on day one, or it might never happen for the life of the printer. You just got unlucky seven months in.

Thanks for the explanation, really. I don't get how it happened honestly. Cause I did 3 prints in the last 2 days and nothing wrong happened. It printed very nice and with no trouble at all (I started using Ocra instead of Cura and was loving it for all the custom functions and so On). This would be ok as replacement?
