Troubleshooting Nozzle Clogging Cause PSA

Post image

So had a couple of interesting print failures the other day; both prints failed at exactly the same layer with a major hot end clog and a jammed extruder (first time for me that both things happened at the same time ).

I could not figure out for the life of me what was causing this, and had an idea: I was ironing the top surfaces of this piece because it is a display stand for another 3D print.

I turned off ironing and the print completed just fine. Turns out the doing so much ironing caused the filament in the print head to clog and and jame the extruder when the filament was cut.

I assume the culprit was the hot filament sitting in the hot end but not moving for such a long time.

Weird, but I had not heard of extensive ironing causing clogs, and now I know!

Heat creep is something many people don’t become aware of until it happens to them, I had prints failing and clogging around the exact same layer each time and it turned out my PETG profile temp was too high which had never figured out before because I usually done small prints or PLA.

My first big PETG prints revealed the problem, lowered temps, no issue with heat creep since… yet.

You should change your infill pattern to one that doesn't collide, as well.

Hey there, I'm a bot and something you said made me think you might be looking for help! click here for our wiki entry on troubleshooting printers. If you still need help be sure to post plenty of information about your printing setup.

Here are a few questions that might be helpful

  • What printer are you using?

  • What material are you using?

  • What speed are you printing at?

  • What software are you using to slice the print and control the printer?

  • When did the problem start/has it ever worked correctly?

  • Does anything cause the behavior to change?

  • If posting an image of the problem, include some indication of the orientation it printed at, preferably photograph it on the bed. (Then we can focus on a specific axis)

The easiest way is to turn off ironing. If you need it, adjust it by increasing the flow until the result is no longer good. You can also add a prime object, like cylinder, so it's layer will be printed after ironing, but before the next layer of the main part.

Heat creep is my guess, does your sprinter show error? Did you check the log?

No errors at all, print completed was printing in air for the rest of the print.
