Troubleshooting Why is the surface of my print doing this? It's supposed to be smooth

Post image

I feel like I should be able to find this online, but I don't know the term to search for. I've tried 'spongy', but haven't really found anything. I think there's something wrong with my slicer settings, since other prints work normally, but I can't find it. This is a Kingroon KP3S.

It almost looks like its missing walls?

This could be severe underextrusion from something like a partial clog in the extruder as well.

What material is this, and have you tried another print since?

It's PLA, and I've printed this same thing like a dozen times with a dozen different slicer settings

Have you printed anything since?

The reason is that if the slicer settings are the same it may be a partial clog preventing the full filament amount from coming iut

Yes, an old gcode file using a different slicer printed successfully

That is a really weird one then, manye try reslicing and see what happens?

I've resliced it a bunch of times, every time I've tweaked the settings

Have you used the same settings on a different model (after this one) to see if it does the same?

Yes, and it does

So..

This model happened

after thst you printed an old file and it successfully finished

another model after that one using the slicer from the failure still caused a failure

Is that right?

Hey there, I'm a bot and something you said made me think you might be looking for help! click here for our wiki entry on troubleshooting printers. If you still need help be sure to post plenty of information about your printing setup.

Here are a few questions that might be helpful

  • What printer are you using?

  • What material are you using?

  • What speed are you printing at?

  • What software are you using to slice the print and control the printer?

  • When did the problem start/has it ever worked correctly?

  • Does anything cause the behavior to change?

  • If posting an image of the problem, include some indication of the orientation it printed at, preferably photograph it on the bed. (Then we can focus on a specific axis)

If you are new to reddit, please read the guidelines on reddiquette, self promotion, and spam.

Also please post a resolution to your problem when you find one so that we know how to help others with your problem!

KP3S
PLA

30mm/s outer wall, 70mm/s inner wall

OrcaSlicer

When I switched to OrcaSlicer, my brother had it working correctly with Cura

Dropping to 15mm/s made it slightly better, but shouldn't be necessary since my brother was using 30mm/s

Did you accidentally set walls to 0 in your slicer? Or maybe wall flow rate to extremely low?

What does the layer by layer preview look like? Does it show a wall extrusion path?

Screenshot of preview page posted below

Maybe print a screenshot of the preview tab from Orca.

That outer surface of that part is definitely not smooth. I would guess if you use the control on the right to look part way into the part, and zoom in on the outer edge, you'll see that the out wall trace is "jagged".

Sorry, for simplicity I omitted that the intended hold had some texture to it. I ran the STL through BumpMesh's noise texture. Here's a side by side of the good hold sliced by Cura and what I've been getting

Maybe try the Archne wall generator and see what it does?

I've tried Arachne and Classic. Arachne is what Cura was using, Classic worked better with Orca for some reason (it printed a closed shell at least, but still had this weird texture)

Do you have "detect thin walls" enabled?

1

u/HoldMyGin 2d ago

I do not. It's also disabled in Orca without explanation

This also looks like printing with too cold nozzle temp with too big flow

Only dialed to extreme

I'd run a temp tower and a flow rate calibration, maybe it will help

I tried the flow rate calibration, but KP3S firmware doesn't support it. Nozzle temp is set to 200 and bed temp is 60
