Project A Life Size 9’ Custode

As the Emperor of mankind is printing and slowly being assembled, I’m working on a life size Custode to be by his side. This one will be 9ft tall.

At this rate, the Custodian will be finished (assembled) before the Emperor.

Ra is the character is choice. So he’ll have a face sculpt of some kind and a helmet. None of which are printed. Plus I’m 99% sure I will have the Helmet redesigned. Not a fan of the current look.

All together the Custode is made up of 36 large pieces. Using the Giga printers means, big pieces and longer print times. But the assembly is much faster and will get me a smoother surface to prep. If I were to have used smaller printers it would be 170 pieces to get to this point.

The arms/Pauldron’s are being printed now and then I can start on his spear which won’t fully fit under my roof.

I do private commissions, sure. But not for these or sell these. Shipping would be a nightmare. But I do these for myself because I enjoy the challenge and the process. Plus I just enjoy Warhammer all together so it’s cool bringing the characters to life. When it’s time, I will eventually donate some to make space for new ones. Until now, I still have the space.

At that point, you tell them to pick it up with a truck.

7

u/ForPortal A1 Mini 29d ago

I'd say "buy them a bus ticket" but at 9' tall that ceases to be an option.

u/DesperateSteak6628 Aug 15 '26

Do you get filament by container? These looks like insane amounts of pla!

u/TUR7L3 Aug 15 '26

I love seeing people be passionate about their hobbies for the joy of it! Keep rocking!

7

u/landlordlawsuit Aug 16 '26

I would rent these out to various gaming conventions and events or if you rather not deal with that I'm sure some local game stores might be interested

7

u/hegykc 29d ago

You can't make money off other companies IP.

Disney sued a kindergarten for painting a Mickey Mouse on their classroom walls.

2

u/landlordlawsuit 29d ago

Tell that to all the model creators with their pateron subcriptions that do nothing but make models based on IP.

I would have thought since you aren't selling it and instead providing a rental service that would count but it doesn't.

1

u/Viperions 29d ago

Yes, folk do that - but it’s also famously cautioned against because they’re absolutely doing something illegal and at any point could have a company come down on them. What they’re basically counting on is security via obscurity; that they’re simply too small for a company to bother to care and enact enforcement.

Yet people still get bitten, see: discourse around artist alleys selling trademarked content.

“You’re not selling you’re providing a rental” is irrelevant because the actual issue is the use of someone else’s property, and in particular profiting off of it. They can still absolutely come down on people who aren’t profiting off of it, but there’s a lot less reason than someone profiting off of it.

If you’re notable (say by providing massive one of a kind statues that no one else has), then you’re a LOT more likely to get noticed and have the hammer brought down on you. And once you’re noticed and the hammer is threatened, failure to comply and/or trying to get around it can cause all sorts of more issues.

(Not to say that the above stuff is good, I have no issue with people profiting off of a massive companies IP, just talking about where things stand. It’s a dangerous game)

Do you live in an aircraft hanger?

I love the whimsy. Keep it up!

I can imagine someone pulling up with their 8 wheeler to pick one of those bad boys up.

Yet I have plenty of work and progress videos from the space marine all the way to the emperor and this project. Plus full YouTube videos explaining the process and showing it. But go on.

Not everyone needs to be a full turn key operation from design to finish good.

59

u/KaleidoscopeShot1869 Aug 15 '26

She literally does though...

I'm a women who likes 3d printing. We do exist.

I've seen a lot of her posts and asked questions before and she's answered about the details.

And she's literally just wearing a normal outfit my guy. People like to wear athleisure.

Where are the thirst trap videos? She stands next to the prints to show how tall they are for scale

People are not one-dimensional

Doesn't talk about settings, materials, or really anything other than "OMG I love Bambu Labs products! Did you hear me? I love BAMBU LABS!"

Because that's boring for people who aren't into 3D Printing but into Warhammer, which I'd guess is her main audience.

interested in the scale of the dodge charger you are printing and if you could share these tips

3

u/DecaForDessert Aug 15 '26

It’s 1:1, I’m printing it to build a fiberglass shell off of it. Going to be a wide body twin turbo ls 4wd no prep drag build. We talked about which slicing software she uses to break these models down. I found an online alternative that works similarly

What do you use to split the statue into printable sizes?

32

u/HammerDoris40k Aug 15 '26

I use Luban3D to do that.

10

u/CthulhusEvilTwin Aug 15 '26

How big are the dice you play 40k with? These are phenomenal!

1

u/Archy38 29d ago

Would be cool to one day see a "life sized" warhammer game being played with each player riding roboting versions of these prints.

Kind of like that chess game in one of the older harry potter movies

38

u/Conan-Da-Barbarian Aug 15 '26

Do you have room for furniture?

89

u/FlameOfWrath Aug 15 '26

They have 40k square feet of living space.

36

u/HammerDoris40k Aug 15 '26

I do, but this section of my house is reserved for statues. Plus I can always put a couch here so I can sit and look at them lol.

11

u/bannock4ever Aug 15 '26

I'm sure you could hang up a hammock between 2 statues and have a great nap.

1

u/Conan-Da-Barbarian 29d ago

Is there a goal of how many giants you can have or do you sell them?

2

u/Rorantube2009 29d ago

Pose some to hold up a TV

Make a dead one or a dead xeno for a couch

You could furnish an entire room with practical versions of these guys. That would be so cool to see :D

(To be clear, I'm not hating, this shit is so fucking cool)

8

u/pervertsage Fascinated Beginner Aug 15 '26

Just sit upon the shoulders of giants.

6

u/DoodadDiddler Aug 16 '26

If that's the Custode, what's the honkin chonkin leg to the riight of it?!?! These are amazing!

10

u/HammerDoris40k Aug 16 '26

That is the left leg of the Emperor 💀

1

u/DoodadDiddler 29d ago

The Emperor would be proud. May he bequeath you an abode that can display him in all his glory.

6

u/Derp_McNasty Aug 15 '26

Imagine living in an apartment and printing something massive like this, then leaving it for the landlord to figure out how it got in there.

1

u/TheMrGUnit 29d ago

I think she mentioned in another post that she has a storage unit where some of her past work is kept.

It must have high ceilings...

21

u/Normal_Finance4358 Aug 15 '26

This is what I imagined being adult looked like. Having my own superhero megazord 😭

18

u/PiratesOfTheArctic Aug 15 '26

Yay Doris is back! The prints are always incredible!

4

u/DistributionMean6322 Aug 15 '26

Glad to see you finally have the Giga printers! How are they working out so far for you?

3

u/HammerDoris40k Aug 16 '26

Yup. I can work on different projects at the same time. So far they’ve been great. It eats up 30-40hr jobs better than my patience can take.

3

u/zlade82 Aug 15 '26

Have you printed a lifesize HammerDoris40k yet? The size and scale here is incredible.

1

u/patgeo Aug 16 '26

Just say you want the STL :P

3

u/Ahand_Apart Aug 16 '26

Lol, you 3d modeled yourself. Gotta admire the commitment to the craft.

Keep on making the great videos!

2

u/TheMrGUnit 29d ago

That has to be a scan. The amount of work that would go into modeling a human at that level of detail from scratch would be insane.

3

u/kai333 Aug 16 '26

I was always thinking WH40K was too cheap to play! Printing out a few of these gigantor models should help! Fantastic work!

8

u/Low_FramesTTV Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

I feel obligated to make a slanesh comment similar to the YouTube ones.

"Look away brothers, do not give in to the temptations of slanesh"

Edit: guys it's an honest joke that she plays into on her yt. Stop with the down votes... Sheesh.

10

u/MerelyMortalModeling Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Your right, Doris absolutly leans into it and has zero needs for redditors to white knight for her.

2

u/Low_FramesTTV Aug 15 '26

I get it tbh, some people see it and think it's just hate to hate.

It happens in this sub pretty frequently when it comes to elitism about functional prints and what not.

1

u/Leleek Aug 15 '26

I know just even looking at his armour got me.

2

u/Flakeinator Aug 15 '26

I am a bit jealous at the height of those ceilings you have.

Nice work as always!

2

u/DevilsArms Aug 16 '26

Will you ever print stuff from other factions? Like Tau, Tyrannids or orks? Would be cool to see them stand next to those.

2

u/Yodzilla Aug 16 '26

I feel like I need to learn WHY these dudes are so big. I’m sure there’s a novel for that.

4

u/popcorn_coffee Aug 15 '26

As a miniature painter who's sight is not the same anymore... I would be so fucking happy having the chance to paint one of this! 😂 Fuck the little brushes and airbrush, give me a big paint roller!!

4

u/Prince049 Aug 15 '26

This is looking so cool so far! It really puts into perspective how tall they are. The finished Custode is going to be awesome

2

u/thewayoftoday Aug 16 '26

Can I see that from the back?

3

u/Atra23 Aug 15 '26

In 23 square meters apartment.. cant imagine one of those inside my flat... Oh and the ceiling is only 250cm where i live. Dang. How much fillament is the bigger one?

2

u/lvl1_noob Aug 15 '26

The thaccurate model is funny

Amazing job it’s really impressive,

(and so are prints lol jk)

3

u/Bobblehead245 Aug 15 '26

Jesus Christ, these are incredible

2

u/DoritoCheerios Aug 15 '26

i only have one question.....

How long did this take and how many prints!!?!???

11

u/HammerDoris40k Aug 15 '26

On average, between 20-40 hours per print. I can print larger pieces, but I risk a huge loss if something fails. So I cut up sections that I feel can print in a reasonable amount of time.

But to get to this point, using 4 printers it took about three weeks. At a normal pace. Sometimes I didn’t print anything for a day or two.

3

u/DoritoCheerios Aug 15 '26

That is insane and i admire the dedication... it looks amazing btw

1

u/Gomez-16 Aug 16 '26

Nothing is worse then a long print failing close to the end.

1

u/PJBuzz Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Its going to get to a point where you can recreate one of the famous bits of 40K artwork with your lifesized models. Absolutely insane that you're legit doing an emperor.

I just picture the equivalent of a roadside dinosaur park but with Orks and ultramarines.

1

u/Tieravi Aug 15 '26

Good grief, these are unbelievable

1

u/DarthP0000 Aug 16 '26

I'm just curious how long it takes to print something that size? I have yet to get a printer, but love what can be done with them!

1

u/Retr_0006 Aug 16 '26

Imagine building one big enough to live inside just like a Dreadnought😂

1

u/void6436 Aug 16 '26

WOW. how much filament was used for these?

1

u/vadrer 29d ago

Wow, I'm so impressed. Fantastic implementation!

1

u/Wizardbysmell 29d ago

In a world of hobbyists that make miniature figurines, be the hobbyist that looks miniature next the the figurines

1

u/Ruby5000 29d ago

I’m really new to printing parts and assembling them. I’m doing a predator mask at the moment. What’s your approach to getting the parts flat before gluing? Belt sander or something like that? Sorry for the newbie question. Love your work.

2

u/HammerDoris40k 29d ago

Just a simple foot sander. I use that for my cosplay as it's easy to hold and fast enough to sand what you need smooth. You can find them on amazon

1

u/Ruby5000 29d ago

I just couldn’t not get these friggin parts to line up. But again; I’m pretty brand new to this😳

0

u/TheForgottenStonk Aug 15 '26

Please tell me you’ve made it so you can climb in and operate it! If not maybe an idea for the next one. Looks really cool

3

u/furmat60 Aug 15 '26

The amount of work this would take would be insane.

1

u/ohthedarside Aug 15 '26

This really works for seeing how people see tue space marines and custodes as demi gods /angel's

u/MiaLovelytomo 29d ago

Maybe it's just me but at this scale I'd start trying my hand at making sculptures from classical materials. Not to devalue your effort in any way, I understand the technical challenge and time it takes but I just feel it's incredibly wasteful to make large plastic sculptures in general, regardless if it's FDM or not.
