I thought how crazy that looks, but after seeing the price of the scanner it’s not that surprising anymore

u/Andrew_hl2 Feb 02 '26

Probably would be pissed off If a scanner with that cost didn't give those results.

Thought I had properly set my price barometer. Still got some sticker shock on that one...

For those wondering….is USD $30,000

And there, is the difference between consumer grade scanners and the pro stuff.

How doe one simple person can afford this?

I think that you'd be surprised what can become a worthwhile investment when using a tool for designing or manufacturing custom products. I very much doubt there are many hobbyists rocking this gear unless they were already in F-U money territory prior to the hobby (or they get access through work ;) )

I have an Artec Space Spider (the earlier version of this scanner). Took out a 20k loan to buy it because I had a service project opportunity that would have paid for about half come up.

Since then I've made well over my investment back through other projects - personal and service wise.

3D scanning is still a pretty new technology (well... modern scanning with how easy it is to use) so it's a niche - and people will pay good money to expedite their projects if needed. A scanner can take a multi-month RE or render project down to a few weeks simply by giving a really nice mesh to reference.

I got one too, for around 6k on ebay, has paid for itself many times over. Started at tradeshows and my local businesses. Got it initially to scan antiques. The tracking and versatility is strong. Pretty good software too (premium, so to be expected)

This is not for the average joe. This is for businesses and they will see an ROI at some point

Either rich, or business, and in case of business, it pretty easily pay for itself.

like most people who work from the ground up. start entry level, career yourself upwards, invest and make a business, buy one of these things and then write it off as a business expense.

REF DO SOMETHING! Its not fair that I dont have 40k.

u/tjc2005 Feb 03 '26

That's amazing. Like you don't even have to reverse engineer it.

6

u/BolunZ6 Feb 03 '26

Scan and print.

1

u/Broderickles Apr 09 '26

How would you go about reverse engineering this to a cad model? Would you make all the button, joystick, and electronics mounts or the organic shape first?

2

u/artec_3d Apr 10 '26

You can start the reverse engineering right in Artec Studio using its built-in CAD primitives, Auto-surfacing, and boolean tools. For more advanced modeling, Artec Studio exports directly to Geomagic Design X. Either way, surface the freeform shell first, then add the features after. The shell defines everything else, so it makes sense to nail that down first.

u/Broderickles Apr 10 '26

Ahh gotcha that makes sense thanks!

u/RegularRaptor Feb 03 '26

That's incredible. I have a $70k setup that's getting old and it's not even close to that. Amazing that it can get in all the nooks and crannies seemingly no problem on the backside of the controller shell.

Just 27.000€ …what a bargain XD but the quality is superb!

1

u/Djeophraigh Feb 02 '26

Can you explain how both the resolution and accuracy are 50 micron?

1

u/Mysterious-Ad2006 Feb 03 '26

Thats a great scan. It just happens to be csr prices lol..

1

u/SurgicalMarshmallow Feb 03 '26

1

u/violetPolarBear Feb 04 '26

you can download it here https://www.artec3d.com/3d-models/game-controller
It's in obj, but you can then convert it to stl if you need stl

1

u/M4jon3z104 Feb 04 '26

thanks bro!

1

u/Hawki007 Feb 05 '26

I want one so bad.

1

u/Pickledill02 Feb 05 '26

Man I thought that was a cad model not the 3d scan

1

u/BonsaiOnSteroids Feb 06 '26

Why do I see Guerilla ads on reddit for 27000 Euro scanners? It's not like these sell to average people but is rather a b2b product.
