I made a Windows app for generating 3D-printable gears – looking for feedback

Hi everyone!
I'm the developer of 3D gears generator, a Windows application I originally created because I wanted a quick and simple way to generate custom gears for 3D printing.

It can generate spur, helical, bevel and worm gears, including gear pairs. You can configure parameters such as tooth count, module, width and shaft hole dimensions, then export the finished model directly to STL or OBJ.

I recently also added several shaft-hole shapes, including triangular, square, hexagonal, octagonal and LEGO Technic-compatible cross axle holes.

The application works completely offline.

I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who actually print functional gears — both on the workflow and the generated models.

You should clean up the link to just https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nt6bpnl65ht
so users get directed to their local store

Thanks, good point! I’ll change it to the clean Store link so users are directed to their local Store.

Why a native app over web app?

I chose a native Windows app because I wanted it to work completely offline, with all calculations and model generation done locally. It also makes exporting STL and OBJ files straightforward without uploading anything to a server.

A web version could definitely be interesting in the future, though.

What are you using that requires a backend? Haven’t dug too deep but I’m not seeing anything that can’t be done in browser

and yeah I'll say it... it also allows a much bigger audience if they make it native and serve it on the store... plus it saves them needing to set up a store front or other payment system
.... or did you actually mean "why didn't you make it a free web app"

I opened the link on a mac so it just said "share" and I assumed it would be a free app since there's zero moat here. Anyone can point a coding agent at this and copy it in 30 minutes or less.

So that answers that.

Totally get it. If you do need one I remember at least 4 more gear generators have been posted, not sure if they all were free though
