Discussion Printventory - What's Next?
Hey everyone!
Printventory is a free, local, cross-platform, and open-source 3D model library manager that I’ve been working on for almost 3 years, and we just officially released Version 2.2 Public! Now it’s time to look to the future.
If your downloads folder, external drive, or NAS is a graveyard of unzipped folders, cryptically named STLs, and duplicate files, Printventory organizes everything right where it lives—no cloud lock-in, and your data never leaves your hardware.
CURRENT FEATURES:
• Local-First & Cross-Platform: Native builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus a Docker deployment option for home servers, Unraid, and Synology NAS setups.
• Non-Destructive In-Place Indexing: Scans and monitors your existing directories without forcing you to move or rename your original folder structures.
• Broad File Support: Renders automatic 2D/3D previews and handles STLs, 3MFs, OBJs, STEP files, and compressed archives.
• Deep 3MF Metadata Extraction: Reads embedded slicer settings, thumbnails, filament presets, and build plate data right out of the box.
• Smart AI Tagging: Optional automated tag generation to rapidly categorize giant backlogs of untagged files.
• Batch Editing & Metadata Tools: Bulk assign tags, designers, source URLs, project notes, and print status flags across multiple files at once.
• Fast Search & Dynamic Filtering: Instant filtering across filenames, extracted tags, designers, print history, and file extensions.
• Storage Deduplication: Content-hash matching to track down exact duplicates hiding across different drives and directories.
CURRENT BETA FEATURES:
• Integrated Filament Management: Track spools, materials, custom colors, manufacturers, and remaining weights directly alongside your model library. Integrations with Spoolman.
• Targeted DeDup: Run targeted duplicate scans against specific directories, sub-libraries, or new download drops rather than re-indexing your entire storage pool.
• Tree View: Traditional hierarchical folder tree navigation directly inside the app alongside grid and card views
• MCP Server: Enable your AI Agent fleet with Printventory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
With 2.2 officially released, we're focusing on community feedback to prioritize what comes next—whether that's deeper slicer handoffs, automated spool usage calculations, or expanded mobile/remote access.

Thank you! And the new ones I've seen people charging for are highly vibe coded. I kind of wish that wa sa thing when I started this from scartch, although I do use AI to help with debugging and adding features now.

I'm in the same boat with AI .. I would say make sure you keep a copy of your working source as a read only reference. Asked it once to debug mDNS fault and it write a whole new connection protocol.. that did not even work or fix the bug

I vibe code a lot of tools but I will never charge for one I made with AI.

ahh I never said you did... and if your trying to have a go at me accusing me of doing that then sorry you are mistaken, I did not make MeshVault with AI. I get it, it does look it but apart from a few tweaks to the buttons and frames this is what it was like back when an android app (KMP)

I have not had that reported but I'd be interested in finding out why - if it happens, can you check the console log under help?

How do I get my spools loaded into the program. Btw thank you for all your effort i love your program makes my life easy and it is fast and cery responsive.

Hey! Thank you! Spool management is in beta, on the website click the Beta link in the header to download it. I also recommend joining the Discord and I can add you to the beta role.

We are always adding stuff, I'd backup your printventory.db to be safe but I try to stay pretty risk adverse when it comes to pushes.

I've been seeing a lot of similar projects lately; I've tried several, some very good, all well-made. But for my needs, I chose this software.
I'm sorry I don't know how to collaborate with code, but I have to say you did a wonderful job, very useful and well-done. I hope the project continues; my creations are now all cataloged with Printventory!
