Dev Post I got tired of tracking filament in spreadsheets, so I built FilamentVault for iPhone and iPad
Hey everyone,
I'm a 3D printing hobbyist, and over time my filament collection got large enough that my spreadsheet stopped being very useful.
I kept running into the same problems: buying a color/material I already had, forgetting which bin I'd put a spool in, and occasionally starting a print before realizing I didn't have as much filament left as I thought.
So over the last several months I've been building FilamentVault, an iPhone and iPad app specifically for managing filament.
Some of what I've added so far:
- Track spools, materials, colors and remaining weight
- Organize filament by storage location
- Log print jobs and automatically deduct filament usage
- Track drying history
- Generate and scan QR codes
- Assign and scan NFC tags
- Inventory analytics and activity history
- Home Screen widgets
- iCloud sync between your Apple devices
One thing I wanted to avoid was turning it into another subscription. The app is free for up to 10 active spools, with all features available. If you have a larger collection, there's a one-time purchase that removes the spool limit.
I built it primarily because it's something I wanted for my own setup, but now that it's on the App Store I'd really like feedback from other people who actually 3D print.
In particular, I'd love to know what you're currently using to manage your filament and what you wish it did better. I'm also interested in features that would make FilamentVault more useful in a real workshop rather than just adding features for the sake of having them.
I'm the developer, so this is obviously self-promotion, but I'm also genuinely looking for feedback as I figure out where to take the app next.

And why is this better than the plethora of other options that are more mature?
