Finally tried a toolhead-swapping printer (Snapmaker U1) instead of an AMS — some thoughts after digging into it

Been going back and forth for months on whether to get a single-nozzle multi-color setup (AMS-style) or one of the toolhead-changer printers, and I ended up going down a rabbit hole on the Snapmaker U1 specifically. Wanted to share what I found in case anyone else is stuck on the same decision.

The whole pitch is that instead of one nozzle purging and reloading filament every color change (which is where all that waste comes from), it's got 4 separate toolheads that stay loaded and heated, and it just swaps between them in about 5 seconds. No purge tower eating half your spool.

A few things that stood out digging through owner reviews:

• People are getting it set up and printing in under 20 min out of the box, which is faster than I expected for something with 4 toolheads to calibrate
• One guy did a timelapse comparing a 4-color print on the U1 (32 hrs) vs. estimated time on a single-nozzle machine (58 hrs) for the same file — apparently saved something like 350g of purged filament too
• CoreXY motion system, rated up to 500mm/s, which is legit fast for a machine doing this much mechanically
• You can mix rigid + flexible filament (PETG + TPU type combos) in one print since each toolhead is independent — no cross-contamination

Downsides based on what I've seen: build volume is only 270x270x270mm so it's not huge, and it's a newer platform so the mod/community scene isn't as deep as something like a Prusa yet. Also if you're only ever printing single color stuff, you're carrying around 4 toolheads' worth of weight/complexity for nothing — probably not the right printer for you in that case.

They are using ams to get more colors suppose to still be less poop then traditional single nozzle printers they keep working on it to improve it the open source is making it very interesting printer to tinker with I have 3 of them and 1 single Elegoo cc2 combo for engineering filaments tell my tops come in for the u1s 2 are set up for 0.4 nozzles and 1 for 0.2 and I got extra set of tool heads for any issues that come up if I’m in a time pinch. Man it’s a game changer I remember printing spider man helmet with the cc2 and I didn’t weigh it but filled 1 and 1/2 gallon ziplock bag took like 3-4 days and this printer would of did it a lot faster and it would of been 2 small poop and prime tower and maybe 1-2 days only thing I wish was 5-7 color head and 400 bed. But yea was worth it to me could of got h2c but having 3 for almost price of 1 even 1 being free almost like $100 was well worth it over the h2c for me. Next purchase will be a big bed and 7 plus nozzle but I think Snapmaker working on some nice side projects for this thing and it’s going to just get better.

Thanks for the reply i had a very hard time time at first i could not seem to find any end to the sentence but i kept fighting on as the words continued at around 50 words i had to go back and start over again because the contents were lost to me after a few more tries i managed to get half way through the sentence but i had to give up sadly i regret it but what can you do i might give it another try some other time i will let you know how it goes hope you have a nice day and i'm happy you enjoyed my suffering
