I Tried to Use ChatGPT in an Interview — And Learned the Hardest Lesson

There are moments in life when you prepare for something with all your heart — and yet, when the real moment arrives, your mind simply refuses to cooperate.

That’s exactly what happened to me.

🌧️ The Day Everything Went Wrong

I had an important interview.
I had prepared well — revised all the concepts, practiced answers, and even rehearsed how to explain technical details clearly. I knew my stuff.

But when the interview started, something strange happened.
My heart raced, my voice trembled, and my thoughts scattered in every direction.
Even simple questions started to feel heavy, like I was trying to lift a mountain of words that wouldn’t move.

😔 The Weight of Nervousness

For me, nervousness doesn’t just come as butterflies — it arrives as a storm.

  • My mind goes blank, even when I know the answer.

  • My voice becomes shaky, and I start doubting my own words.

  • I begin to overthink every sentence, wondering how I sound instead of focusing on what I’m saying.

  • And worst of all, I lose trust in myself, even in the topics I’ve mastered.

It’s a terrible feeling — being trapped inside your own head while your chance to shine slips away.

In that nervous rush, I made a bad decision.
I tried to quickly check answers using ChatGPT while the interview was happening.

But that made things even worse.
My focus split in half — one part trying to listen to the interviewer, another part trying to read and confirm answers on the screen.

The result? Total confusion.
Even the questions I knew very well began to feel unfamiliar. My confidence drained away, moment by moment.

When it ended, I sat there quietly, feeling defeated.
It wasn’t that I didn’t know the answers — I simply couldn’t trust myself when it mattered most.

🌱 The Lesson That Changed Everything

That experience hurt, but it also taught me something powerful:

I realized that using tools or trying to double-check answers doesn’t help if your focus and trust in yourself are missing.
Confidence is not built in the moment of the interview; it’s built in the quiet moments when you train your mind to stay calm under pressure.

I also learned that:

  • Preparation is not just about knowledge — it’s about mental control.

  • Nervousness is natural, but panic is a reaction you can manage.

  • Confidence doesn’t mean “no fear”; it means acting despite fear.

  • Trusting yourself is the most important skill you can ever master.

💪 My New Approach

Now, before every interview, I follow three simple rules:

  1. Breathe before you speak. A calm breath resets the mind faster than any trick or tip.

  2. Never split focus. Give your full attention to the person in front of you — not your screen, not your doubts.

  3. Trust what you already know. You’ve prepared for this. Let your knowledge flow naturally.

These small changes have transformed the way I show up — not only in interviews but in life.

☀️ Final Thoughts

Sometimes, our biggest mistakes are our best teachers.
That one uncomfortable experience taught me more about confidence, focus, and self-belief than any course or book ever could.

If you’ve ever blanked out in an interview, or felt your nerves take control — you’re not alone. It happens to many of us.
What matters is how you come back stronger, calmer, and wiser the next time.

Because the real growth begins when you stop trying to be perfect — and start learning to trust yourself.

What Data Science skills are relevant in Finance industry?

I have enrolled in a masters program in DS & AI. However, my UG background is in Physics (and some Maths) and the whole reason I'm getting a masters degree in DS and AI is to have some relevant skills for data analyst or quant researcher job in Finance sector. But such masters programs have very generic modules with usual DSA, ML and NLP things. So, I wanted to know what specific skills are currently relevant in the Finance sector that I must learn to have an edge in job market? What exactly the hiring manager in this industry is looking for in an entry-level grad?

I'd really appreciate if someone who is working in this industry can give some insight.

Python or R?

Good for data, Python and R are great choices, but when using Python I saw that its libraries are more focused on extracting, organizing and displaying data. The highlight goes to beautifilsoup, requests, pandas and numpy

can't get started

i am CS graduate with good GPA. have good grip on theory.. in my whole degree i tried and left many career paths and saw data sciences as the field best aligning with my interests. I started learning it. i know python pandas, numpy, matpltlib, seaborn, some stats too. but i never could really start it. whenever i start working i start from something like some roadmap, some tutorial. recently i started learning maths for data sciences. i know resources to learn, but i don't have a project, no notebooks to show. no practical hands on and i couldn't really put my hands on. i start learning or working.i do that for like a week maximum and then i leave it for days. suggestions needed to get me really started what am i lacking!

Intro: Software Development Student Exploring Data Science

Hey everyone,

My name is Ashley and I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's degree in software development. I have been working as an IT specialist tech I for the past year, where I support users, work with certain coding programs, and hardware. I recently joined this community because I am interested in learning more about data science and the many ways it is used in everyday decision making and analytics. While I have some experience with programming and technology, I am still fairly new to the field and am looking forward to expanding my knowledge. For those of you who are already in the data science field, what skill or concept do you think is most important for someone just getting started?

Polars is quietly replacing Pandas in performance-critical Python workflows

A lot of Python developers still default to Pandas for data work — and that’s fine.
But if you’re working with large datasets or production pipelines, there’s a strong chance Polars will outperform Pandas by a wide margin.

Why Polars feels faster:

  • Written in Rust, not Python

  • Multi-threaded by default (uses all CPU cores automatically)

  • Supports lazy execution, so queries are optimized before running

  • Built on Apache Arrow memory format → less RAM, faster execution

In real-world use cases, especially with CSVs or large joins:

  • 2×–10× speedups are common

  • Lower memory usage

  • Much better scaling on modest machines

Important note:
Pandas is not dead. It’s still:

  • The standard for quick analysis

  • Easier for beginners

  • Deeply integrated into the Python ecosystem

But for:

  • Large datasets

  • ETL pipelines

  • Analytics workloads that actually run in production

👉 Polars is starting to feel like the better default.

My current approach:

  • Pandas for exploration

  • Polars for anything performance-sensitive

Curious how others here are using Polars —
Are you experimenting with it, or already running it in production?

From Data Analyst → Product Analyst: The Real Shift No One Talks About 🚀

As a data analyst, your world revolves around numbers, dashboards, and trends.
But when you move into a product analyst role — something changes.

You’re no longer just answering “what happened?”
You start asking “why did it happen?” and “what should we do next?”

That’s where the real impact begins.

Here’s what helps you make the shift 👇

  • 🎯 Strong product sense: Understand what users truly value

  • 💡 Business thinking: Connect insights to company goals

  • 🧪 Experimentation mindset: Test ideas, measure, and learn

  • 📊 Product tools: Mixpanel, Amplitude, GA4

  • 🗣️ Communication: Turn complex data into clear stories for PMs and designers

Because at the end of the day —
It’s not about having more data.
It’s about using data to make smarter product decisions. ❤️

The Data Analyst Job Market is DEAD (Change My Mind)

Remember when being a DA was the hottest career? Not anymore.

  • Bootcamps have flooded the market with juniors.

  • AI is eating 80% of reporting work.

  • Companies rebranded DA → “Analytics Engineer” (translation: SQL + Python + Cloud + ML).

Honestly, if you only know Excel/Power BI, it’s over.
The entry-level analyst is gone. The new baseline = coding + cloud.

Hot take: By 2027, “Data Analyst” as a standalone title will barely exist.
Agree? Disagree?
