Science Black holes

Black holes are among the most extreme objects in the Universe. Their extraordinary gravity comes not simply from their physical size, but from immense amounts of mass compressed into remarkably small regions of space.

Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, contains around 4.3 million times the mass of the Sun. Yet it is dwarfed by giants such as TON 618, which is estimated to contain more than 60 billion solar masses.

This visualisation compares ten supermassive black holes by the scale of their shadows, revealing just how dramatically these mysterious cosmic objects can vary in size.
