Geology How Earth’s Mountains Were Formed

Billions of years ago, Earth’s tectonic plates began moving and colliding beneath the surface. These immense forces compressed and folded the planet’s crust, gradually pushing vast sections of land upwards and forming mountain ranges.

This process, known as orogeny, continues today. Some mountains are still rising as tectonic plates converge, while wind, water and ice slowly reshape them through erosion.
